The CMCs are on the train home with Twilight and Fluttershy after saying goodbye to Spur and Biscuit. They are very sorry about using up the flower's magic, and are even more sorry for themselves when they see their older sisters waiting for them at the train station. Rainbow, Rarity, and Applejack are livid, but they understand, in their own ways. The CMC's older sisters take the CMCs off on their own after chewing them out as one. Then they have the biggest talks of their lives.

I just got around to reading this fic, and something about some of the punishments feels... overly harsh.

Well, can't say the punishment didn't fit the crime.
I would not mind seeing the Crusaders helping out at the farm in the capacity Apple Bloom was being penalized or at the boutique in the way Sweetie Belle was. Since Scootaloo is a pegasus, that's one area they can't help out with. For one week each.
Since this is Cloudsdale, this is the only set of tasks the other two Crusaders aren't going to be able to assist with.
Even foals can be competent in their own way, though. Look at what Spur did.

I always thought that the timing of this episode should have come sooner than later. Applebloom had already been mostly on a long trip by herself delivering the pies that Applejack was supposed to deliver but didn't because she was too busy babying her sister.
