To fully understand it they haven't really gotten the best attention from the Ponies and therefore made them feel unwelcome in Pony society. So they decided to get rid of the Pony name and choose their own name for their race.

1. Pony-like body with bat-like wings.
2. The connection between the undead and vampire-like entities.
