It has been a long year at CHS for junior Flash Sentry, if only because he'd watched his girlfriend Sunset Shimmer grow crueler and crueler. By the end of the year, he gives his bully girlfriend am ultimatum: be nicer, or he breaks up with her. Things seem to go well over the summer, but as the new year begins, the old saying proves itself true once more: all good things must come to an end.

Ultimately a nice little fic about getting out of a toxic relationship, although underwhelming.
There's no surprises, not much of an emotional resonance, although I liked that through it all Flash was communicating with his dad about it, helped make the story fee less... narrow? I guess?
It works well as slice of life, and a good backstory for what might have happened before the first movie, and crazy how much Sunset especially has grown.
Also liked the subtleness of Sunset, how quickly she changed with Flash and how it seemed genuine.

I've heard that a story being predictable means it's a bad story, which I disagree with. If a story is predictable, then that just means it was written the same way you would, or simply opens up possibilities for more personal conflicts. While surprises can be good story telling when done right, I felt it would only detract from Flash's internal emotional journey that I wanted to focus on. Flash is a character who gets some criticism for not having a character flaw, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have one. His emotional journey is based on the character flaw of being too kind, which others can take advantage of as Sunset does.
Then I conveyed exactly what I hoped to. I'll be going into more from Sunset's side of things in a future fic, a memoir from her point of view.
Mate.... this is so beautifully sad and I really like how it’s implied that flash likes twilight bc she reminds him of sunset (and idk if you’re thinking of a prequel but I’m really interested in how sunny changed I like the idea that she was nice before she got nasty)

Then look forward to a fic I've been working on and off for years that's a memoir written from an elderly Sunset's perspective. But don't hold your breath for it. I'm not anywhere close to having it publishable, partially because I've been focusing more on my mafia fic, Ragazze Equestri. It's rated M so I can't link it, but it's on my page.
