Twilight has a dream. It's more of a nightmare. Due to her own interference, she watches as one by one her friends pair off, leaving her alone. She wakes in a panic. The dream feels too real.
Seeking guidance from Zecora, she sets off a chain of events in real life where her dream predictions start to come true. It makes her question everything.
Is her fate as an alicorn princess, to end up alone, or is something more in store for her future?
There is some romance/shipping and a little closeness, but nothing explicit. Not yet, anyway. If it changes in future chapters, I will upgrade the rating.

What's keeping Twilight from making more friends?

Nothing at all.
Making new friends won’t replace the old ones, especially when they are her core group and the first friends she really made.
Sometimes when someone finds a romantic relationship they neglect their friendships. Not saying that would happen here. But sometimes the one not in a relationship feels left out and forgotten.
I guess in my mind this dream is a manifestation of a fear that she has about being left alone. Her friends “pairing off” are meant to be representative of that feeling of loss that she will eventually have to deal with if/when they die and she does not.
So perhaps as the story progresses she will look to find other friends or perhaps she will learn something else. We shall see.
I also feel like Twilight sometimes overreacts to things outside of her control. Such as this. So that’s where the idea came from.
