The Departed - DekaSkittalz

If a tree falls in the forest, but nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? If a Human is deposited in the middle of the Everfree Forest, and doesn't make it out alive, was he ever really there?

But Nobody Heard a Sound

Groaning, I reach up to rub my head, and immediately pull my left hand back with a wince of pain. Cracking an eye open, I notice my hand is stained with blood. That’s when I notice a warm liquid dripping down my forehead; likely the blood.

What the hell happened?

The fact that my head is bleeding and the implications that follow catch up to me as I panic, my eyes shooting open to scan my surroundings. A dark forest greets my vision.

How’d I end up here? I live out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, sure; but nowhere near a forest.

Attempting to clamber up to my feet proves to be a mistake, as when I put my weight on my right arm to try and get up, it lights up in pain and gives out beneath me entirely. Letting out a yell of pure agony, I grip my right arm and try to keep it as still as possible. Through teary eyes, I look at my arm and see that it’s broken.

Panic sets in just like the cold air that I was now becoming vaguely aware of. Patting my pockets, my heart rate spikes as I notice my phone isn’t in my pocket. Not only that, but my keys and wallet are missing too. Did someone mug me and leave me for dead or something?

That still wouldn’t make much sense. I don’t have time to dwell on this now; I gotta get out of here. Using my left arm this time, I bring myself to my feet and get a better look at my surroundings. Nothing but forest for miles in every direction… can’t see any stars through the trees… sticking my finger into my mouth and wetting it, I hold it in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.

Once I have that, I follow the direction the wind is blowing. No particular reason, but honestly I don’t have anything else to go on. I try to keep my arm in a position where it won’t hurt, but no matter what I try it ends up hurting a little bit. I ended up settling on using my shirt as a half assed sling, having it half folded up on the right side.

lets see… lost in a cold, dark forest, head trauma, broken arm, no way to call for help... fucking brilliant. Don’t even know how I got here.

Any little noise I hear causes me to dart my head to look in that direction. Call me paranoid, but I feel like I’m being stalked. I mean, wouldn’t you? Besides, paranoia is probably the only thing I have going for me. Keeps my head on a swivel.

I end up walking for god only knows how long. However, I hear something besides myself or the occasional owl. This comes in the form of leaves crunching under somethings weight, followed by a… a cluck? There are chickens out here? Wait… a chicken… maybe there’s a farm nearby or something! I change my direction and walk towards the sound of the chicken. I hear the chicken cluck again and pick up my pace. Maybe if I scare it, it’ll head back home or something...

What I see past a set of bushes causes my blood to freeze. What is in front of me shouldn’t exist, yet here it is. A chicken dragon looking hybrid thing, with red eyes and fucking pointed teeth! I immediately turn tail, booking it away from the would be chicken. I hear a squawk and hear the damn thing chasing after me. I run as fast as I can, my arm hurting from the shaky movement. As I hear the thing gaining on me, I put on an extra burst of speed, not wanting to get eaten alive by the small impossibility of a nightmare.

Eventually I no longer hear the little demon hellspawn chasing after me, so I chance it and stop for a moment to catch my breath; I end up collapsing with my back against a tree, gulping down lungfuls of air. I’m not out of shape, I just haven’t had to run in a long while; an administrative job will do that to ya. I feel dizzy, my head spinning in circles while my stomach is doing jumping jacks, and my arm is trying to gnaw itself off just from the pain. Quickly leaning over to the side, I empty my stomach contents onto the ground next to me and fall over next to it, spitting out what little vomit remains.

I lay there for a good while, just writhing in agony. What finally gets me to stop is hearing some more leaf crunching; much more heavy this time, almost as if the ground is shaking with each step of whatever is approaching. Clearly not fit for anything at the moment, I quickly panic and look around. I find a tree branch and quickly climb it, nearly falling off a few times since I was in such a hurry.

What I soon see nearly stops my heart. A fucking giant lion scorpion hybrid thing with wings! I keep as quiet as I can, watching the beast. It walks up to my pile of vomit, and gives it a sniff before recoiling back in what I assume to be disgust. It lifts its head and continues to sniff around. It looks around and gets visibly frustrated, as it starts to thrash about, putting dents in fucking trees.

Boy am I glad I didn’t try running from that thing…

It eventually stalks off, and I wait for what feels like forever with bated breath before I work up the courage and strength to get down from my position in the tree.

I need to get out of here… NOW.

I book it in the opposite direction the big cat beast went, praying to whatever god that may be watching over me that I get out of this alive. I don’t care if I end up crippled for the rest of my life, I just don’t want to die here.

However, it would seem the devil is watching over me instead, as running turned out to be a HUGE mistake. I now have an entire pack of wolves chasing after me; what’s more, is that they are made of god damned wood! Wooden wolves! I can’t be insane, this pain is far to real. Tears in my eyes, snot running from my nose, I’m full on crying; I know very well I’m probably going to die here. As I’m running, I can’t help but start thinking back to better times; Birthdays, parties, holidays. This turns up to be my downfall however, as I end up tripping over a root while I wasn’t paying attention. I hit the ground with a heavy thud, and flip onto my back in a painful roll. I quickly bring my head around to look at my impending doom: a whole group of at least 12 wooden wolves, one of which is pouncing straight at me. I bring up my broken arm, because let’s face it, it’s already useless, if I lose it, it wouldn’t be that big of a burden on me. The wolf lands on my gut, knocking the wind out of me and clawing the fuck out of my abdomen, and latches onto my arm with its wooden fangs, and violently starts trying to tear it off. I scream out in pain and terror. Using my good arm, I try to hold my broken arm in front of me and beat off the wooden wolf, but it’s completely useless. I’m likely concussed, weak, tired, and in a panicked and frenzied state. Desperation kicks in and I try everything and anything to stay alive, but it’s no use as the rest of the wolves pounce on me, each one latching onto me with a death grip, each wanting to have a piece of me.

The one tugging at my broken arm ends up finally tearing it off, causing me to let out another scream of pure unadulterated agony. I see my life flash before my eyes right before I see my very last sight. One of the wolves faces diving right for my jugular.

And with that, the human fell limp and silent, the Timber Wolves continuing to tear him limb from limb.

Yeah but you gave me a mini existential crisis

Damn that was an interesting story good job.

9487104
Making me wonder if anyone would miss me

9487108
was it? i don't think it was. maybe its artists thing where ya hate your own work.

9487208
Maybe.
And maybe it's just I like your story because I can hardly ever come up with something good and when I do it turns out horrible.
While from what I've seen of your work it's really good. Atleast compared to mine.

A nice short and thrilling read, at least as much as such a naturalistic piece can be called nice. Very good job on the atmosphere!

Ouch. Good read.

:trollestia:He wasn't, the end.

Just... wow. Short, frightening, pulls you in.

Mind if I do a reading of this for month of macabre this year I read your story and honestly it's pretty chilling and pretty well written and I'd like to do a reading of this as one of my fanfic readings for October unless someone else is doing a reading on this?

9813896
I don't know if anyone's doing or has done a reading of this, but if you want to, go ahead and be my guest! I wrote this as a one off cuz I was bored and guilty for not having updated in a while lol. Just hit me up when it's up!

Now see, THIS is a realistic HIE story. Human ends in the Everfree Forest? He's lunch or dinner for any number of things.

But 99.999% of authors who do this same scenario have it happen in an unrealistic way. Because f:twilightangry2:k good story telling.

10544816
to be fair, alot of the time its meant to be "human is extremely lucky to survive having been in the everfree". sometimes, authors don't rly understand how dangerous it really is though (mainly when they blow off its dangers like "oh it reminds me of home", or thinking the only dangerous thing there is a timberwolf or manticore.) But on the flip side, the main six went in there plenty of times perfectly fine. zecora lives there, and even the cmc go through there on their own to her place.

now, in here, (and alot of other stories), the human is dropped way deeper into the everfree, which can contribute to the dangers, but i still think alot of authors follow the "got super lucky" route, whereas this one, the human got super UNlucky, and wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time, with all the odds stacked against him.

but i do get what you are saying, alot of the times people discount how dangerous the everfree actually is. but at the end of the day, its fanfiction of colorful, magical horses. who says everything has to be realistic?

10545982
If this was grounded in MLP reality though, humans wouldn't even pop up in Equestria anyway. And even if they did, they would be ponies or a native creature.

Reality would be that they would have to land next to Zecora's hut, can literally see Ponyville right in front of them, or meet one of the characters at the very begining to even have a chance (and that's assuming they even believe the newby's story anyway.) They're something's lunch otherwise.

You can call it luck. I call it cliché writting. Or just bad writting period, if something else happens.

10546592
I more think of luck to be the cliche itself is what I was getting at, but I get ya. And maybe for the average Joe shmo, yeah, they'd have very little chance of surviving. But for anyone with a hint of survival/navigation skills, or even lucking out with having a few tools to start with (a pocket knife, a watch with a compass, or some other useful tool that could be conceivably an EDC. hell, some people even have guns on them cuz they have a concealed carry permit.)(at least in america). Not that I'd have someone bring a gun to Equestria, as that just seems... Meh? But just saying, you aren't automatically 100% fucked if you don't land somewhere favorable.

That's what makes us human, the ability to adapt and overcome. But again, I get it. It's been done to death with very little variation, making it very annoying to see over and over again, and allot of people DON'T seem to have any sense of realism towards surviving the everfree.

I feel I said everything that needs to be said on my part, fun discussion m8!

Actually if you watched My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown released on: March 30, 2019
You see that there are in fact random portals all over the Equestrian human world that leads to. You guessed it, random places in the Everfree Forest. So it really isnt that far off. As for the human part, yeah you are right it doesnt make sense for him to be human.
But hey you are watching talking horses use human contraptions that require fingers with hooves. Havent you ever watched Ryan Higa? It dozen matter hu gives uh (little floating number 2.)
However I would have to disagree on the fact that humans would just die. I dont understand why people think we are so incompetent in the wild did they forget that we conquered the wild once already? As a human we have tons of advantages that allow us to survive.

First big brain- yes its a meme but its true. think smarter not harder why even try to fight the animals when you can just outthink them. Use that big brain of yours to make fire, ever played Alien Isolation? The guy saying animals are afraid of fire is true. Every creature has a primal instinct of fear when they see fire. Just chase them with it and run out the forest. That jumps into our next advantadge.

Running, screaming, and tools- we humans cant run as fast as most animals but our ancestors didn't want to run fast they speced into the Endurance tree. We can actually outlast a lot of animals running but thats not going to help us. What will is if we combine running, screaming and holding a fire stick all together to create something known as "Human Pinkie Pie but cupcakes was canon" https://youtu.be/WUhOnX8qt3I

Thumbs- the most important and obvious answer to surviving this scenario is our thumbs though. You ready for this epic strat that no one thought of but can save your life easily? CLIMB A TREE. We evolved from monkeys and they lived in these exact environments as the Everfree forest. So you know what they did? They hid in the trees so we should learn from our ancient ancestors and do the same. the guy would then see Ponyville, slowly make his way towards it. Beg for asylum and be sent back to Equestria merged with Earth world.
So as you can see humans are by no means weak we conquered the world once we can do it again.

to an extent, i'd say you're right. human's aren't 100% fucked if they land in an unfavorable spot, as i've said before. but to another extent, i disagree with you. alot of the things you say simply can't be put into practice as there are too many variables to just say "oh, just do this and you'll be fine", especially in a survival scenario.

yes, humans are smart, yes we adapt, yes we can make tools, but in a live fire scenario, people panic, and fail to think rationally. not to mention, you might not have the tools, knowledge, or available resources to do so either. it really depends on the person to be fair, as someone with an inch of survival knowledge stands an infinitely better chance of surviving compared to someone who doesn't know at least the basics, (which, a mass majority of people don't, because why would we need to? we live in a society (jokes aside). like the equestrian guard, we have become soft over the years.)

and lastly, even if you are skilled, and have knowledge, the tools at your disposal, the time to prepare a little bit, sometimes, the odds just simply don't favor you. sometimes, nature just gives you the finger, because even if you do everything right, you can still end up chow.

not saying you are completely wrong, just that its a balance of both "we can survive" and "we couldn't survive". fun to see someone revive this conversation though, thanks for reading the story and enjoying it enough to comment!

Yes I completely agree with you and was actually thinking exactly that when I was writing that. That is why I made the list into tiers of hardest to do to easiest to do.
At the fire one that's for the Gary Paulsens out there. You can just do everything you need to do to survive.

Next we have the people who still know some survival skills but not really. I said use a fire stick because that's the way to best utilize this build but in the second tier any stick/stone works. If you are able to craft and have your shoelaces you can quickly make a homemade hammer that will do massive damage. All you really need to do is show that you are ready to die fighting. This messes with their head, its the same principle as not running from a bear. If an animal hears screaming coming right for them they will most likely run. If they see an unknown animal running towards them while screaming they will most likely run. The only animals this probably wont work on is a Timberwolf as they have no brains, but hey that's where your bat comes in.

Best part about this build is that you can demoralize your enemies by taunting them with great Scout lines if you are using a bat like weapon such as:
"Ya' listenin'? OK. Grass grows, birds fly, sun shines, and brotha'- I hurt people. I'm a force a' nature! If you were from where I was from, you'd be f**kin' dead!" This is a great base insult but here are some custom one for certain creatures.
You can say "Look at this: just caved in your skull, my Bat's still dry. No clumps of hair - nothin'." This is because Timber Wolves don't bleed.
Finally it would be best if its a Chimera as they can actually understand you so heres what you do. You act all cocky to make them laugh at you (this is key) then you bash their face in with your sticks and stones and right before you go in for the kill you say "yeah I heard you laughing earlier but its ok now cause you're dead."

Finally I added the tree climbing as a cheat for those that are too lazy or cant survive. This is your "tgm" for all yall gamers out there.
