I think it is kind of making fun of how there are soooo many shipping fics between the main characters, which (being the fics) would have to be lesbian in nature due to obvious reasons, even when the characters are not portrayed at all lesbian in the show. I think the pure absurdity of this fic is what makes it so funny.
