It's an idea where Equestria works with flipped (perceived) gender roles from Earth. Which is frickin' silly, since horses are matriarchal by nature anyway (proven with Equestria being ruled by princesses alone) - so Equestria's gender roles aren't reversed, they're the same as they were to begin with - making the name 'Reversed Gender Roles Equestria' very silly which gets under my skin for no apparent reason?
Depends on the writer how bad things get from there. Some writers try to make a statement by having the mares be overbearingly macho, as if to say 'this is how all human men are, this is why they're a problem'. Others play everything up for laughs or to tell a different kind of story without narrow-minded heavy-handed social commentary - the 'right' way to do things.

RGRE stands for Reversed Gender Rolls Equestria.
What does this mean.
In the Show, Since it was made for girls, there are very, very few males depicted. Most characters are female, but what does that mean for the world of Equestria if it were real? Its a ratio of five to one. One male for every five females.
Males are in the minority, And its ruled by women, so Equestria is a mare-atrocracy. Since males are so rare, women would be very protective of them. Males would be coddled much the same way as women were treated in the USA during the 1920's. Men are meant to be seen and not heard. They should stay in the fields or the bedroom. (women should be in the kitchen and silent, type of mentality.) Most RGRE stories follow the Males have no rights of ownership and if married, all legal belongings become the property of his wife. My favorite RGRE story actually has this happen. He looses ownership of his house when he joins a herd with the woman he loves.
RGRE is an off shoot and not the cannon universe, but it is fun to read. The two most realistic stories for an intro of a realistic RGRE are
Xenophilia by AnonponyDASHIE and Tinkering Tom by Tea Equine.
an extreme version of RGRE (and fun reads) would be

I highly recommend you read Family is Who You Love by Kind of Brony its a short, but dam good story in the RGRE genre.

You sure of that? As far as I can tell, outside of leadership being flipped the gender roles in MLP lean weakly towards the traditional. The guard is almost entirely male and the only business tycoons are male.

The guard being male is normal. The stallion's role in matriarchal horse 'society' is to provide breeding and to protect the herd.
As far as the business tycoons, I imagine that's just for simplicity's sake. Old stuffed-shirt full-of-themselves guys acting superior because they have so much money they don't even identify as the same species as people without. Also the rare diamond in the rough that is Fancy Pants. I also don't think they put that much thought into things, honestly - this setup wasn't supposed to be a social commentary, it just worked out to be about the same as actual horses work in relation to their gender roles.
When you start adding things which have nothing to do with horses, you tend to just refer to real-life, I suppose? How many business tycoons have we even seen, anyway? I mean there's Filthy... we've seen nobles and the social 'elite' but they aren't tycoons... a tycoon is still a working person, even if they never leave a nice office, and that's far too barbaric for the nobility and ladder climbers to comprehend.

One of the first stories I got hooked into here.
Tinkering Tom has been on my list for ages. I'll probably dive into that once I finish the series I'm in. Foal of the forest: by moguera. Nice read, with some good fight scenes. Multiple stories though for fair warning.

I also agree, that term "role reversal" here is silly. Among other things it never would be a mirror of human society because of different priorities, mentality. E.g. it's clear that way of treating individual as an extension of property was more or less abolished along with tribalism ( I won't argue how whitewashed heartwarming legend sounded,I treat that as a satire to similar human legends). Also, in spite of common belief, equine herd might be lead both by mare or stallion, the gender bias doesn't really do much to social roles.
After all humans never had gender bias except an artificial one.

9356006 depends on what you mean by gender bias. Cause we are a gynocentric race. We care a lot more about the well being of women way more than we do men. And only cause I as a female is regarded to have more value as did women in the past cause we had children than men who are seen as more expendendable. It was technology that helped even the playing field when it came to the workforce though

Number-wise we aren't. When I said gender bias, I meant mixture of sex ratio at birth (which in modern figures is 1.07 males to 1.00 females) and bias of parents about whom they prefer. In result majority of counties have more females than males even while that ratio being in favor to former - except such countries like Saudi or China and India. Social-wise - that's very dependant on the country's culture, your description would be wrong for some traditional communes in China , where women were exploited and protected as commodity, not as a valued person.
Now , domesticated horses have sex ratio 5-6 to 1 (2-3 to one in wilderness to some accounts).

Subspecies.Horses today are more or less one species supposedly originating in Mongolia, propagated by humanity. I don't have that data, just mined this from various sources when I was trying to find truth behind all this herd philosophy in fandom.
