Introduction

Author's Note:

I'm really excited about this book.

I got inspired because my school decided to perform "My Fair Lady" as this year's musical. I was in the pit orcherstra and fell in love with the music. I thought over time that this story would fit well with a FlutterCord story.

It's not going to be exactly like the musical, like this chapter doesn't have one part that was in the musical. I'm going to add a lot of my own scenes that will tie with the musical's plot but help this story make sense. Also to add fluff and drama.

Hope you enjoyed!

Sunlight shone through the window of Fluttershy's bedroom. Fluttershy let out a soft moan and yawned. Her eyes fluttered open and her eyes adjusted to the light. She sat up, her blanket tumbling from her. The cold air touched her skin and caused her to shiver. She desperately wanted to crawl back under the covers, but she couldn't afford to waste her time home.

Fluttershy's family was far from wealthy. They could barely afford her home; an apartment complex in the more poverished part of Canterlot. Dirt covered the walls and the apartment reeked of decay. Her clothes were all torn and worn down from years of usage. It had been years since Fluttershy had new clothes.

The reason she barely had enough money to get by was partially because of her father. Her father loved nothing more than to use every bit their family received to treat himself and his comrades to rounds of drinks at a local bar. He spent so much time in the bar that he didn't have time to work, which meant the responsibility of earning bits was left to Fluttershy.

Fluttershy's job certainely wasn't the best in Canterlot. She owned a flower stand a block away from where she lived, on Not many ponies bought from her since a few blocks away there was a beautiful flower shop run by refined mares with a larger variety of flowers to sell.

She was desperate to work at the shop because Fluttershy barely made enough money to provide for herself and her family. In fact, that day she planned to go to the flower shop and apply for a job there.

Fluttershy stretched and lifted herself out of the bed, smoothing out the skirts of her nightgown. Her eyes locked on the outfit she left on the edge of her bed the previous night. It was a light blue dress that had a stain at the front and a brown tattered coat that she hoped would cover the stain. The clothes weren't very nice, but sadly it was her best outfit. She hoped the mares of the flower shop wouldn't be too judgemental.

She slipped off her nightgown and pulled on the dress. She rubbed at the stain with false hope that it would come off. She sighed, slipped on her brown coat, and buttoned it up. She smiled with satisfaction after she noticed the stain was no longer visible under the oversized coat. She finished her outfit off with a lavender hat with a white flower sewn onto the side.

Fluttershy walked out of her room, which lead right out into the living room. Her eyes scanned the room and noted that she was the only pony in the house. Her father had already left to go to the bar, unless he had spent another night passed out in the alley behind the bar. She was relieved since that meant she wouldn't have to endure cruel words from him that morning.

Fluttershy opened a cabinet and peered inside for something to eat. The only thing inside were crumpled wrappers and crushed packages. There wasn't as much as a crumb inside. Fluttershy frowned and made a mental note to buy food later that day. She hoped that day she would make enough money to get dinner for that night.

She looked around to see if there was anything else she needed to take care of. As she saw there was nothing needing to be taken care of, she decided that it was time to leave. Fluttershy couldn't procrastinate anymore. Fluttershy started her journey, walking out of the apartment as she thought of what the day would bring. She was so caught up in her thoughts she didn't notice the mare dressed in a very expensive gown walking along the sidewalk. The mare stumbled into a puddle of mud. Fluttershy's hooves flew to her mouth and she was mortified that she wasn't paying attention.

"Ah'm so sorry!" Fluttershy exclaimed, her accent startling the mare.

That was her largest problem. She had a Cockney accent that sounded absolutely dreadful to anypony who heard it. She wished she could get rid of her accent, but she just couldn't. It was like trying to change the color of her eyes. It wasn't possible.

The mare's face grew red with anger.

"You should watch where you're going, you ruffian!" the mare huffed. "This dress was made by Sassy Saddles! Don't you know how expensive it is?"

"Um-"

"I'm sure you wouldn't, since you obviously cannot afford decent clothing," the mare scrunched her nose as she glanced down Fluttershy's outfit.

"That's not very kind of ya," Fluttershy murmured.

"I'm not going to be kind to a beggar!" the mare shouted. She cleared her throat. "Now if you excuse me, I have somewhere to be."

She strode away with confidence, her nose high in the air. Fluttershy sniffled as she felt tears sting the corners of her eyes. She wiped her eyes with her hooves and regained her composure, starting her trip to the flower shop.

Years ago, she was a country filly. She, her father, and her mother lived together peacefully on a farm in a town called Ponyville. Those were her golden years. Her father was a kind and respectable stallion. Her mother taught her how to sew, cook, and clean.

Fluttershy smiled to herself as she recounted her happy memories. She was brought back to reality when a taxi screeched to a halt in front of her.

"Watch where you're going, crazy mare!" the stallion pulling the taxi shouted.

"Ah'm sorry," Fluttershy replied quietly as heat rushed to her cheeks from her embarrassment.

So far, this day wasn't a good day. Fluttershy bit her lip to stop herself from crying, and silently prayed that the day would get better.

Finally, the flower shop was in sight. Fluttershy trotted to it. Cold wind blew in her face, but she ignored it. She wanted nothing more than to go inside and try to get the job she needed so much. But when she got to the door, she hesitated. What if something went wrong? What if they rejected her? She suspected they would because she didn't have to look of a mare in a flower shop. Her rough accent could ruin all of her chances of getting the job.

Fluttershy felt a lump swell in her throat. She took a deep breath.

It's now or never. You need this job, Fluttershy thought to herself. She pushed open the door. The bell that was attached to the door rang. The beautiful, sweet scent of flowers hit Fluttershy's nostrils. Before she could enjoy the beauty of the shop, Fluttershy noticed the same mare she had bumped into sitting at the counter.

"Greetings, my name is Cayenne and-" the mare's eyes widened as realization hit her. "You're the mare who bumped into me and almost ruined my Sassy Saddles dress!"

"Ah'm sorry, maybe Ah should go," Fluttershy said. She regretted coming to the shop already.

"Cayenne, are you well?" Another mare appeared from behind a display of many different colors of lillies.

"North Point, that's the ratty mare I told you about!" Cayenne hissed.

The mare Fluttershy assumed was named North Point turned to glare at her.

"What is all the commotion out there?" said a third mare.

"That thing ruined Cayenne's dress, Citrus Blush!" North Point exclaimed.

"Ah swear it was 'n accident, I'm sorry!" Fluttershy whimpered.

Citrus Blush took a moment to consider her.

"Cayenne, I'm sure this mare didn't mean to ruin your dress," Citrus Blush said. "Though it looks fine to me."

North Point and Cayenne exchanged glances, before sending Fluttershy one last angry glare and turning away.

"Is there anything I can help you with?" Citrus Blush inquired.

"Y-yea, Ah was wonderin' if Ah could 'pply to this 'ere shop," Fluttershy replied. Citrus Blush's jaw dropped and stared at Fluttershy with blank eyes.

"Pardon me?" she said, her voice dull.

"Ah jus' wanted to see if there was any openin' for me to work 'ere," Fluttershy said clearly. She bit her lip nervously.

"It's very kind of you to show interest in my shop," Citrus Blush said. She paused to think of her next words carefully. "While it is kind of you to ask, I'm afraid I cannot let you work here."

"Oh okay," Fluttershy said. She looked down at the ground and her shoulders sagged.

"You're a very beautiful mare and all, but, it's just your accent..." Citrus Blush let out a sigh. "I'm not sure it would impress our customers."

"Ah understand." Fluttershy forced a smile.

"We'd be happy to let you work here if you found a way to make your voice a little more gentle," Citrus Blush said quickly. Fluttershy nodded in response. She couldn't bring herself to speak. "May I interest you in some roses? Free of charge."

Fluttershy gave her a small smile and politely declined. She noticed the two other mares in the back snickering at her. Fluttershy let out a heartbroken sigh. She turned around, avoiding the look of pity Citrus Blush was giving her. She shuffled out of the shop. She needed to get to her flower stand as quickly as possible so she could make up for the lost time she wasted trying to apply to the flower shop.

Fluttershy needed a miracle. She didn't know how much longer she could survive with her current circumstances.

A few blocks away stood the home of the best phonetics professor in Canterlot. The house wasn't giant or small, but the perfect size. From the outside, it looked like a normal home. Once somepony went inside, they would grow confused from the crazy patterns, floating furniture, and more. But, nopony had witnessed such things since the professor always used his magic to make the inside appear normal whenever he had visitors or students.

Professor Discord Higgins was known to be a harsh but efficient professor and along with his good reputation came a good pay. Though he was considered to be apart of high society, he hated the customs ponies of high society had to follow. In public he would act just like them, but when he was by himself he didn't hold himself to as high of standards.

By society's standards, Discord was very attractive as well. He was a unicorn stallion with a gray coat and mane as dark as the night. He had a small white goatee growing, despite that he was young. He looked normal, except for his piercing red eyes and bright blue horn.

But he was barely ever by himself. Today, he had a lesson with a stallion from the Southern States in A-mare-ica. His hoof tapped on the ground impatiently as the stallion read through the book.

"Recite the alphabet," Discord ordered.

"A, B, key-"

"No, no, NO!" Discord shouted. "It's A, B, C, not A, B, key." The stallion looked embarrassed.

"I'm sorry, it's hard to pronounce that letter," the stallion defended.

"We've been working on this all day, and yet you still cannot pronounce correctly!" Discord scoffed. "I think you wasted enough of my time today. Come back next week. Today's lesson is over."

"But I still have a half an hour," the stallion protested.

"I'll give you the amount of money you spent for that half an hour," Discord grumbled, handing the bits to the stallion. "Just get out. I have a headache." The stallion didn't argue and did as he was told after he got his money.

Discord let out a groan and slapped his forehead with his hoof.

"Some ponies," Discord mumbled. "Miss Rarity, MISS RARITY!"

"Yes, sir?" A unicorn with pearly white fur and a curly indigo mane came rushing in.

"Get me some coffee," Discord ordered. "I have a headache. How hard is it to pronounce such an easy letter?"

"Please be easy on him," Rarity insisted. "Not everypony is as gifted in speech as you are."

"They should at least try to take it seriously," Discord huffed. He walked to the chair behind his desk and plopped down into it. "I mean, I've been trying to teach this imbecile for the last two months and he still can't pronounce the letter 'C'!"

"That is a little ridiculous," Rarity admitted.

"I wish somepony would understand how I'm feeling," Discord muttered.

"Maybe it's time for you to find a wife," Rarity said. Discord pounded his hoof on his desk.

"No, I do not need some silly mare to take care of," Discord snapped. "I've got enough to worry about. I don't need a complaining mare as well."

"It was just a thought," Rarity shrugged. "I'll go get your coffee."

After she left the room, Discord looked out the window through his blinds, thinking to himself. Why the devil would he need to get married? Why did anypony get married when they could be free? Discord knew if he married he would no longer have the freedom he had now.

While he was lost in thought, Rarity quietly slipped into his office and set down the cup of coffee on his desk, before leaving again. Discord didn't pay attention to her or even thank her. He walked past the cup and grabbed his coat, deciding that he needed a walk.
