Rainbow Dash sometimes flies high for Wonderbolt training, higher than almost any other pegasus. Up there, it's just her, the earth, and the sky. It's more than enough to give a whole different perspective on things.

Beautiful little character study. Though I'm surprised Dash has patagia, given her feathers. On the other hand, going by in-show X-rays, there are phalanges somewhere in those wings.

In a broader context, a "patagium" is any membranous structure that assists an animal in gliding or flight, like a flying squirrel's skin between their legs. In this context, it's the official term for a fold of skin on the front edge of a bird's (or pegasus's) wing; basically, just the leading edge. I considered using that term, but somepony focused on precision flying would use more precise terms. That being said, when I first learned this, my reaction was much the same as yours.
That was a neat little story. Short and sweet and a little thought provoking. Delightful

Nice little... not sure what you'd call a story solely about a character reflecting on something - Thoughtfic, maybe? Well, whatever it is, it was a rather nice one.
Also, I was amused by this bit:

This is really what a one shot story should be.
Short, sweet, to the point, and full of story that doesn't need sequels, exposition, description or resolution.
It is exactly what it is, and that is perfect.
This was really nice! Nothing like going into the mind of a character like this, and you did a wonderful job.

Vivid and beautiful
Somehow both soothing and intense. I've had moments like this, and while it didn't stir in me a perfect recreation of how I felt then, it was very close. And that's quite the accomplishment since I (and Dash too!) considered it impossible to really put in words.
