See my line of thought was following the letter rather than the spirit of the will
split the estate in two. One half is treated as though she had a daughter (She gets 2/3 daughter gets
1/3) the other half treated like she had a son (She gets 1/3 son gets 2/3)

Well, my legally correct (I hope) solution, the chapter's text into consideration minus the author's note, would have worked out just fine . Pay attention to exact words: "remainder" does not mean "one and/or two thirds", it means "what remained". At which point it "remained", is not stated clearly. Loop-holes, here I come !
