9304855 Well, 'fleeing' would perhaps be a more accurate term considering how I would hardly be surprised if the demons decided that they would vacate any area they know the doomslayer to be in, or commit suicide by proxy by attacking him.
Ya know, I think I like this one better than any other Doom crossover I've read so far. Mostly because it doesn't try to humanize the Slayer or give him a voice. This Slayer is the same as in the game, a fucking angery boi who just wants to kill demons. Really the Slayer should never be the main character in a story because he doesn't have a character. He's just a power fantasy for the player, and in this case he is only there to fuck up some demons. The story isn't about the Slayer, it's about Twilight and the rest reacting to the Slayer. And I think that's the proper way to use the Slayer in fiction.
Unf, this is going swimmingly, I love it! Hahahaha, and yes... Celestia did indeed deserve that punch, but they're even now! So, all's good... for now, until Doomguy punches Luna, hehe.
I’m curious to see how the mane 6 react to the Slayer. Knowing RD, she’ll probably think she can take him, only to eat her words before she can say “I take it back”.
9305588 The thing about all that is though that it is entirely irrelevant to the game. Sure, you're given the Slayer testaments (and technically you can't prove that the Slayer is the one who betrayed Argent D'Nur), but they have no bearing on what actually happens and are basically only flavor text. Just like what the author has done here. All of what happened to the Slayer in this story isn't important to his character, it only happened to set up the story. My point wasn't that the Slayer can't have a character, it's that his characterization should never be made too important to the story, because his character really just boils down to "Man literally too angry to die." If you take away the violence and demon killing the Slayer doesn't really have anything left. EDIT: I wanted to also add a quick quote that I think illustrates the philosophy behind this characterization. John Carmack, the creator of Doom once said "Story in a video game is like story in a porno: it's expected to be there, but it isn't that important."
9305433 This comment basically sums up all the problems I have with all the Doom crossovers besides this one on this site.
Worst part still is that I found one story that ships The Doom Slayer with Twilight as well as Celestia and Luna to a certain extent for no apparent reason. Not to mention in that story The Doom Slayer contemplates a few times on whether or not he has fallen in love with her. Wow, never seen that contrived and overused trope shoved in our faces constantly.
9423592 Not sure where you get Doomguy talking in the lore. Also not sure where you get the Slayer being mute or being inhuman. Allow me to copy some text from a conversation I just had about this.
9423710 "The UAC asking whether he's a man or demon while already knowing about D'Nur and the Sentinels. Hayden's surprise at the Marine's easy use of argent energy despite there being the 'possibility' of him being a D'Nurian, an race of unknown qualities but the known fact they had ample supply of argent energy and the means to use it due to the Wraiths. Why be surprised about it when this alien race had an entire culture designed around the use and protection of argent energy? No shit they would be able to use it without harm.
Not 'It seems to have taken a liking to you.' but 'Well yeah, given all our research you, as a D'Nurian, having flawless reception to argent is to be completely expected.'
He is a human, wearing human armor, fighting with human weaponry, familiar with human culture, doing everything in his power to protect humanity."
9424228 Even if being blessed makes him no longer human, it's still very much in the realm of possibility that it's the Doomguy, especially if you consider Doom 64's ending canon, where he decides to stay in Hell forever to kill demons.
9424449 Doomguy himself is from an alternate reality.
He jumps into Hell at the end of 64 and does his thing. The events in the Slayer's Testaments happen, and all the stuff with D'Nur. Then he goes off on his own after they fall. Does his thing some more, gets his new armor, then the demons trap him and he's in his nap for the next while.
Then, he's in an alternate version of earth that still has the same hell.
Same Doomguy, always human, just a ways down the road from 1/2/64.
9424449 Also, this video is kind of whack. This guy doesn't seem to know what he's talking about with the classic Doom, and thinking that Doomguy is the Betrayer is another thing entirely.
9426202 It's an alternate universe, the same Doomguy. This version of humanity never had his original universe's contact with Hell. It's highly likely that his jumping into Hell after 64 is what caused this, as his presence isn't exactly bound by time, something we know from the Testaments. His indiscriminate killing of demons throughout their history very well could have interrupted their past incursions into his home timeline's history. These were events seen in the classic Wolfenstein games with the Herald of Doom, among others. Keeping demons out of humanity's history could be what leads to the new Wolfenstein's timeline with the Nazis winning WWII. Moving into the 2100 century of this altered timeline brings us to a more technologically advanced and superpower corporation of the UAC colonizing Mars than the UAC that we knew in Doomguy's home timeline. They knowing screw around with Hell rather than the original events of Doom where it was the military accidentally opening up the door.
Doomguy is a foreigner to this timeline, but is still the same Doom Marine. The same human Doom Marine. The not-the-Betrayer-or-D'Nurian Doom Marine. He's a human, wearing human armor, fighting with human weapons, familiar with human culture, and doing everything in his power for humanity.
In Doom 1, he travels through the experimental portal to the Deimos base above Hell. From the manual, this portal was said to cause individuals to go into a fit of rage before exploding. However, those experiments were between Phobos (Earthside) and to Deimos (At that time, Earthside) through the Hell dimension. The Doom Marine only got a half dose of what happened to them, and thus retained his sanity and bodily composition. This event started his journey to becoming something more than human physically.
After his return to Earth and campaign to save humanity there, he retired. What's known is that years later he sent out to stop the demonic incursion in Doom 64. The number of years that passed is unknown, but he's still in fighting shape. Could be a side effect of the teleportation and his time in Hell.
At the end of 64, he takes the plunge and starts his full-time stint in Hell. Throughout this time, he is blessed by the the Seraphim (The wraiths) and gets a new set of armor from the Wretch (98% this is the Betrayer), along with an untold amount of physical corruption by hell energy from the 24/7 bath in demon blood he's taking. He hangs out with the Night Sentinels (Prior to getting his new armor), D'Nur ends up falling, and he goes about his business. Some time later, he's killed/incapacitated by the tech-priests in the temple trap and gets locked away in the sarcophagus, a field of argent energy about him.
Given what we've learned from the game and how he heals from argent energy, my bet is that the trap actually did kill him but his body is so corrupted by hell energy that any amount of argent will eventually revive him. So, the demons built the sarcophagus to keep the argent off him. Also gives them reason to take the armor off of him, as it has argent accumulators on it.
Later on the UAC recovers his coffin, somehow breaks the seal on the argent field, he recovers, and 2016 happens.
9426791 That's sort of up in the air at that point.
Technically, the game warps you out of that room when you hit 10 health.
Aside from that, the following text scroll mentions nothing of your death, just that you end up in the Deimos base. I see it as far more likely that the end of E1 is just us seeing what it felt like for him as he traveled through the teleporter to Deimos. A hell of a lot of pain, which lines up with what we know about the teleported subjects while Deimos was still Earthside.
An immediate trip all the way through back to Earthside probably would have caused Doomguy to go all explodey.
9426791 That far back into his story, I don't think he would have recovered from dying. Fast forward to 16 and what we know of him from the Testaments and the gameplay itself, and I'd say that it's pretty official.
Makes you wonder about that zombie skin for Eternal.
"Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment."
Note the past tense about being blistered by the fires of hell and how he chooses the path of perpetual torment, which implies that he was in a position to choose otherwise and stay out of hell.
"Tempered by the fires of Hell, his iron will remained steadfast through the passage that preys upon the weak. ... for he passed through the divide as none but demon had before."
Draws attention to him traveling through the passage that preys upon the week and this divide, most likely meaning whatever dimensional boundary rests between Hell and the other dimensions it invades, such as Earthside and D'Nur.
"And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time,"
This one speaks for itself.
Also of note, the codex entry I think you're referring to is a UAC record from the current timeline, which would not have any knowledge of his time in the old timeline. All they know is that every human they've sent in has been on a one-way trip, and only Samuel Hayden has come out alive.
9440839 The fact that humanity doesn't recognize Hell, and that there's no mention of any sort of previous invasion. Because they never were invaded before the events of the game; that was Doomguy's home dimension that was previously invaded, and he simply ended up in this different dimension because Hell is connected to the multiverse or something.
9438560 Deimos is still around Earthside in Doom 2016, while at the same time a codex entry makes reference to the ruins of an unfinished tower and a certain land formation within hell. A land formation on Deimos. Which had a tower being built in the first game. And was brought into hell.
So we've got two Deimos's in 16, one of which is in Hell with the construction projects of the first game, and another which is still around Earthside. This is another piece of evidence that the classic games have occurred, but that this reality is different.
Also, 64 is a sequel to Doom 1/2 where a souped-up archvile-like enemy resurrects a bunch of demons on an unknown location. Could be Mars, could be Phobos, could be Earth. I don't think it was exactly clarified where the game takes place, just that it happens somewhere the demons invaded prior.
Oh well now this is just bloody good fun. Great work so far on a crazy crossover, can't wait for more!
While Celestia didn't have any bad intentions, i guess she kinda deserved that punch, oh well, atleast they are even now.
ABOUT TO?! Discord! It has already arrived! And it goes by the name of The Doom Slayer!
I was just thinking about this fic today.

Luna still needs one though, to even things out.
I'd pay to see the slayer punch celestia xp.
eh, could be better than Doomguy’s Wednesday.

I know exactly what story you are talking about and I agree %100
9316136
Don't forget that the Slayer in the story you describe is also really into Linkin Park.... fml.
9318359
Just so you know I haven’t read the story to it’s fullest nor do I plan on doing so because of how contrived everything is.
...I will admit, I laughed just a little when Celestial got punched. That felt like such a Doom Marine thing to do.
Good story, more please.
9319660
I laughed at aftermath.

Kinda want to know what you think of my Doom crossover then... Shameless plug is shameless.

Hell yes. More. More blood. More lore. More brutal story telling.
