October, 2179. The USCSS Alhambra has discovered a distant planet amazingly rich in precious ores and minerals designated as "LV-1349."
Mining goes rather well for about a week or so.
Until the entire crew of the Alhambra vanishes.
With a massive payload worth billions waiting to be towed back, the United States Colonial Marines are called upon to investigate the missing crew and bring the Alhambra back to Earth. Their orders also include avoiding the local equine populace as much as possible... but as we all know, sometimes even the best laid plans can go to waste.

This is really good, but there was one problem I noticed; you have a tendency to switch narrative tenses. You'll say 'Luna says' which is present tense, then 'Luna walked' which is past.

Early on, I was unsure on what tense to have the story in. I completely forgot to update the first chapter to past like the rest of the fic is.
I made some changes to it, hopefully I nailed those down.
Why didn't the marines use the APC's guns on the changelings instead of retreating. It has a plasma canon and double mini-guns. I doubt they have anything that can penetrate it's armor. Are you using the Colonial Marine Technical Manual ?

The reason for them retreating is even though they have the dual miniguns as well as the cannon, it would have been a tactical mistake to fight the swarm as it was closing in way too fast on their position. The weapons on board the APC are not exactly built for close quarters engagements.

Also, the marines, once they recover their wits, should be a little curious about the Lindsey's comments. I mean the first question is this: "How do you know if it's a male dragon." It's not like a dragon has external genitalia.
It's been mentioned before, but, how is the dragon possibly, even remotely capable of catching something that is designed to break orbit? If this is the UD-4L Cheyenne, why wouldn't it just pop a couple of missiles if for some reason it couldn't just leave a biological creature that relies on wings in the dust? Why wouldn't they use the APC?

As for the dropship and its speed, the dropship was not even in position yet to break the atmosphere. It had just avoided plowing straight into the face of a mountain. They would have then been preparing to exit the atmosphere, but then the crew had their uninvited guest.
And as to why it didn't use any weapons as well as the APC, I already answered that question a while back. Too many enemies approaching way too fast for an unprepared crew. It would have been a mistake to engage them in that situation.

The order issued was to get the guys inside of the Alhambra out.
So it's either stay where they were, fight and let the troops on the ground get sandwiched in between two waves of Changelings or get them out and fight another day, preferably one when the ground troops didn't have their pants down.
