Only, somewhere along the way, his train somehow finds its way onto Equestrian tracks. With no clue exactly what happened and a sneaking suspicion he's never going to reach California, he finds he's got a detour to make first. Especially once that strange steam train got involved.

Reminds me a bit of Taylor Anderson's Destroyermen series (except that has DRM, is NOT free to read, and doesn't have transformations into cuddly equines or magic. There are nonhumans with tails, though, and the transdimensional travel sequence is kinda similar).
