Well... Look at the gryphons. Something with claws and beak should've screwed something with paws , claws and tail.
Equestria gives middle finger to many things, as was noted here earlier in the comments. Chimeras must be favourites of discord to behold. So many "monstrous" things with a lot of possible combinations.
So it's not so far fetched.... It's just the size difference that is unusual. In the end - "love conquers all" is here to stay.
