Little Filly... - Phoenix Heart 27

On Mother's Day, those mares who are mothers' tend to enjoy being pampered by their foals or significant others. However...sometimes a Mother can't escape the knowledge that...their little one can't celebrate with her.

...Don't you Cry, Everything will be alright

It was that time of year again when many foals/other creatures all over Equus would put a lot of creativity and hard work into crafting, in many opinions, “the best present EVER” for their mothers’. I speak of the holiday called ‘Mother’s Day’. The 1 day per year many mares with foals old enough get to simply relax as their families pamper and treat them well. Everywhere from Ponyville to the Crystal Empire, even to the far southern regions of Sonambula and beyond the discovered territories, creatures were getting ready to show their love to that one special creature who helps them the most. Be you a two-year-old pony or an ancient looking griffon, all they want is to please their mothers’ on this day. For many this day brings the promise of a great day with their babies and for others…...not so much…..

Mrs. Half Note sat down in her living room. While she sat, she thought back on a lot of events that transpired up until this point. See, Mrs. Half Note has a husband and had a little filly of her own. Now by all means she loved her family! Would do anything for them and not expect more. Most Mother’s Days’, like today, would be filled with smiles and good vibes all around. However...today was eerily quiet. Her husband was at work and she was here alone. She slowly got up from her chair and made her way through the seemingly larger-than-normal house to the one room she hadn’t touched in about 9 months. As she opened the door an overwhelming feeling of grief washed over her as she took in the surroundings. A decent sized bed that had simple character bedspread on it, filled a corner of the room. On one wall was a lot of recording equipment including a few cameras and 3 computer monitors amongst other things. Near the bed and standing at full height was the thing that truly made Mrs. Half Note tear up--a keyboard piano that looked like it’d seen better days yet still looked fresh and ready to be played. The owner was nowhere to be found. All the posters, the video games, the cds, everything! Would never be used again. Mementos from other countries would never again be gushed over or laughed about with friends. This room was merely waiting for an owner who would never return. She looked around once more before spotting the pictures attached by a simple strand of twine above her bed. Looking closer, she could see many pictures of her daughter. Some she’s alone. Some with her friends and some with herself and her husband along with their daughter. Seeing this, she sighs and quietly sits on the bed.

“...Oh my little filly...I’ve always been there for you. I’ve tried to protect you from anything bad and I...I think I did a pretty good job of it...the 1 night I can’t be there and...and...I’m sorry! I--I wish I could turn back time and tell you to watch out! To scoop you up and run! I...I only wanted you to be safe…”, she cried to the air.

Mrs. Half Note couldn’t have known it was possible, but her cries were being heard from above. Whatever God was listening, he heard the sorrow filled cries of a mother to her daughter who left too soon. Taking pity, he summoned the mare’s half-grown daughter to his side.

“Child of my likeness. You shall see your mother once again. I shall give you an hour to soothe her aching heart. Your father shall know of this as well, but don’t worry about him. You’ll have your chance to speak with him next ‘month'.”, The God spoke to a flabbergasted young mare before gathering her in a soft glow of light and sending her to her mother one more time.

An hour later…
A soft glow appearing out of nowhere, suddenly made Mrs. Half Note aware that she was still in her daughter's room. The glow became brighter but through it, she thought she could see a figure. As the light dimmed, the figure became more clear and she couldn’t believe her eyes. For right there in front of her, was the daughter she’d lost.

“Oh. My. Gosh…..--Serenity? Is...Is that really you?”, Mrs. Half Note asked in a state of awe.

“Yes Mama. It’s me...well in a sense I guess. *chuckle* Anyways, I’m here for only an hour. The lord has allowed me to come and soothe your aching heart mom.”, Serenity said with a small chuckle and a smile.

Mrs. Half Note quickly got to her hooves and tentatively reached out for her daughter, only to discover she could indeed touch her. With that being known, she gathered up her foal and scooped her up into a big hug. Being mindful of the areas where her injuries should’ve been.

“I know what your thinking Mama. Apparently when you die in a manner that I did the wounds don’t appear to your spiritual or angelic body. Which...I think I can be grateful for as I don’t think I’d want to see a few bullet holes on me. It’d remind me of what a great tragedy it was and I don’t wanna think that way. I’ve missed you and dad so much.”, Serenity continued on as she hugged her mom.

“Baby, just seeing you for now is truly a blessing.”, Mrs. Half Note said through her tears as she watched her daughter walk around her room again. An almost permanent grin on her face as she ghosted a hoof over her things. As she reached her keyboard, she suddenly got a look on her face that said she had an idea.

“What are you thinking?”, she asked.

“What makes you think I’m thinking of something?”, Serenity asked with a wry smile.

“Because I’m your mother, I know when you have something going on in that pretty head of yours.”, Mrs. Half Note smiled as she spoke.

“Okay, I’ll give you that one. I was thinking of giving you your Mother's Day present. I had already planned it through but then...well I died so...that definitely puts a pause on any future plans now *laugh*...do you want to hear it mama?”, Serenity asked, to which her mother nodded. She then sat at her keyboard and began to search through her song book before finding one labeled “To Mom, From Serenity”.

Taking a breath, she began to play and sing:

Little filly, don't you cry
Everything will be alright…

As she played and sang, Mrs. Half Note couldn’t help but smile as she watched her little angel play her heart out. As the song went on, she couldn’t help but remember all the great times she had with her daughter. Her first steps. First words. The first time she learned how to ride a skateboard. The pride and sense of accomplishment she had when she posted her first online video. All these thoughts and yet the one that was most prominent was the very first time she saw her in the hospital. She was so tiny and her little tufts of brown mane and cream color coat, she was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen. She even remembered how she felt before Serenity was born. That same feeling is what she was feeling now as her daughter sang to her. When the song was over, Mrs. Half Note had tears down her face and a smile a sad smile plastered on her face. Serenity stood from her piano and went over to her mother and hugged her as she cried.

“Happy Mother’s Day mom.”, Serenity whispered into her mother's short brown mane.

“Thank you little filly. I love you Serenity.”, Mrs. Half Note said through a tear filled smile.

“I love you too mama. But you and dad have got to be strong now. Just because I’m gone from Equus, doesn’t mean I’m gone forever. You’ll see me again soon. So long as you hold me in your heart, I’ll always be there mama.”, Serenity replied, her eyes filled with tears as she was held by her mama. A tender hoof stroking her long brown mane lovingly.

This makes me remember that this is the first Mother’s Day where my mom is without her mom. My grandma passed away in Fall of last year.

Aww. Well I'm sorry for your loss. I do hope that my story provokes happy memories of her.

And up until you brought god into this, I was going to upvote the story. Honestly, rewritten as everything after as not explained at all, and it would be fine.

Fair enough as that's your opinion. That is simply the direction I wanted this to go in. Also, to note, I said:"Whatever god was listening". While that does iterate to religeon, I however never state which one. Hell, it could've been some mystical god-like being in the MLP world for all I cared.

That's the point! Also, if you listened to the song then you know partially why I based this story on it.
