That is true. This was originally going to be more of a Ember and Thorax fic to go along with the cover art, but when I actually started writing it went it's own direction. I think this is the first Spike fic I wrote actually. He's not really a character I use often in my stories.

I don't know, I wasn't aware there were that many Spike "Suffer" fics, when I wrote the story or that they even had a genre name. Though I'd classify them as Romantic Tragedies. Spike does lends himself to the genre if you view his obsession with Rarity as a doomed romance that makes him miss out on other romantic partners by the time he realizes it himself.
I'm defiantly wasn't thinking that deeply when I wrote it, though.
