Written for Everfree Northwest's Scribblefest 2018!

Tempest Shadow was a military leader, and one of the Storm King's most deadly generals; but a long time ago, she was just a little filly in Ponyville. Now she's asked Princess Celestia to help find her family, so that she can resume her life in Ponyville. Tempest knows Celestia has to be lying to her when she reveals that her mother is - Mrs. Cake?! So Tempest sets out on a quest to find her real family - right under Princess Celestia's nose!

She waited until she could hear the six ponies obviously following her start whispering among themselves before she spoke her prepared lines.

“OH,” Tempest Shadow intoned, loud enough for the would-be stalkers hiding behind the barrels in a nearby alleyway to hear her, “I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS WHERE I BELONG. BUT … MY HEART, IT’S BECOMING SO FULL OF THIS STRANGE NEW EMOTION.”

The voices behind the barrels sharply quieted, listening keenly for her next words.

“I THINK … I’M GOING TO GIVE PONYVILLE ONE MORE TRY.” Tempest Shadow said, with as much gravitas as she could manage, and heaved an overdramatic sniffle as she rubbed beneath one eye. “I THINK I’M GOING TO GIVE LOVE … ONE MORE TRY.”

“I knew it!” came a soft voice from behind the barrel, which was rapidly shushed by five other voices.

“What I mean is - you weren’t born like most little unicorns.” Mrs. Cake explained gently, and laid her hoof against Tempest’s shoulder, steadying her. “The mirror you found in that cave - it was hidden for a reason. Somepony looked into that mirror and pulled you out. Celestia told us that many centuries ago, in the reign of a queen called Majesty, it wasn’t uncommon for foalless families to come to the mirror and ask for a child. But - there was a great tragedy, and the mirror was locked away. The mirror has been forgotten to all but those of the royal line, because of the risk that it might be used again. At least - that’s what they thought, until the mirror was stolen from the treasury, and used to create… you.”

Oh fuck me ten ways to next Sunday. That mirror?! No wonder Celestia became a pansy about it and hid it. I get the feeling the real reason was that Celestia knew that she could never be half the mare Queen Majesty was, and her better use of the mirror was proof.

My theory anyway.

*hoofbumps for our mutual G1 usages* >D

Question, what mirror in particular are you referring to exactly? Is it one from canon like FIM canon whether comics or otherwise or a reference to something from a previous generation like G1? Only mirrors that are relevant that come to mind for me are the magic dimensional mirrors Starswirl made that lead to Canterlot High and Mirror Equestria where Good King Sombra lives now corrupted by darkness in a heroic self-sacrifice to purify Mirror Celestia and Luna, though still remembering his love so there might be hope for him. Outside that is the Mirror Pond/Pool which is more of a reflecting copy water than an actual mirror.

Something from G1. The one described in this story to be exact.

Could you tell me more about this mirror please? i'm rather curious to know why it's so dangerous to just make a pony from it. Was that ever stated in G1? Was it in an EP or the comic series?

“What I mean is - you weren’t born like most little unicorns.” Mrs. Cake explained gently, and laid her hoof against Tempest’s shoulder, steadying her. “The mirror you found in that cave - it was hidden for a reason. Just like Ms. Cake said here, foalless families would sometimes come to Queen Majesty for help and the mirror would give them one, or maybe several I think depending.

Calling it outright dangerous is probably pushing it, but if you happened to look into it, and a thought along those lines crossed your mind (not even on purpose or with any intention of acting on them), the mirror would still do it.

From what I've read anyway.

And here's another: Queen Majesty was never actually in the animated G1. She is a comic only character.

I see, so basically if you thought something dangerous while looking at the mirror it would give a foal that's dangerous? Is that what you mean?

I'm honestly not the best person to be asking this stuff. I'm going off of what I remember, and that's kind of limited.

This is a great discussion, and I'm glad you guys caught the G1 reference! :raritystarry: The G1 comics/lore could be surprisingly dark at times!! However there are no specifically dark references to the mirror that I am aware of, I let my imagination embellish that part a little bit! But I couldn't resist throwing in an offhanded mention of Majesty!

Queen Majesty could be dark at points I remember. But only on those who truly deserved it. One I rememver well was a Goblin, and she had spared him once.

Not a second time.

But mostly she was a pony kind of like Twilight in some ways. Friendly to all those who were nice, and an absolute terror to those who harmed her ponies and friends.

Majesty was a staple of the G1 comics sold in the UK, appearing in nearly every issue. She was also in the books The Magic Nut Tree, The Trolls and the Castle of Darkness, The Cross Weather Witch, A Shock at The Stable Show, and My Little Pony Makes a Wish, among others. She had four magic horseshoes which could turn her invisible, as well as a crystal ball and magic mirror which she used to keep an eye out for danger to her little ponies.

While most ponies had very specific magic related to their symbol or interests, Majesty could work almost any magic with a wave of her magic horn and a song-spell. On more than one occasion she turned the enemies of ponykind into statues, trees, or simply caused them to bubble away into nothing.

Someone did a reading of that particular 'baby mirror' comic.

Majesty was hardcore!! :rainbowlaugh:

This was a great tale. I loved the pacing, characterization, and suspense build up this story had. Tempest/Fizzlepop's internal emotions and reactions weregreat and fit her character.

The twist at the end reminded me of what Rey's search for her parental "origin" was "implied" to be in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Cave mirror symbolism and all. Except it being literally magical in this case. Though that was before the comments, (and author), revealed the ties to G1's Majesty and lore.

Fantastic read I say for sure.

I would love to see fics with Fizzle spending time with Pound and Pumpkin.
