kudzuhaiku

She's looking at you. Yes you. And she is judging you with her eyes. There is no escape.

Sometimes, the strongest love is felt from a broken heart. Letting go is hard. Sometimes, there is no better way to say, 'I love you,' than to part and go your separate ways.

An entry in the Weedverse.

I can feel what he feels and now I'm struggling to not cry

The ink blessing and curse for Sumac it seems.. Along with his voice since Sumac truely wants to be a good pony and not unduly influence those around him..

Powerful. The next chapter already has me on edge.

You made me cry, Kudzu... again. My hat to you, dear Sir... again.

This reminds me of another story I read where one of three brothers went off to the marines to protect his country (and by extension his family) just to end up coming back and finding out that one of his brothers had gotten into trouble, and ended up getting murdered.

The other brother basically comes down on the marine asking him where was he when they needed him.

The marine answers " I went so I could protect the family... "

The brother then responds " Well if you wanted to protect us then why weren't you here to do it?! "

I understand Olive's thought process, but the truth is once you get inducted into any kind of armed force you no longer get to decide who you protect. Your family and friends are nothing more than statics on a spreadsheet that the general (or princess in this case) uses to decide which course of action will result in the lowest statistical loss.

Olive is basically rolling the dice that Sumac and company will be on the right side of that spreadsheet...(granted since Sumac is the main character chances are he will be).

Jokes aside, this is a really sad concept. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

So you going to name a succesor to compleat your works for when old age comes nocking?

For all my jesting this was well done.

Oh man, now I'm crying again

I absolutely hate vows like this. They are archaic and barbaric. I understand the meaning behind them and why some people would make this choice (good on them), but they absolutely shatter families.

Goddamn how I abhor vows like this.

I would like to take a moment to extend both middle fingers to all factions, real or imagined, who cling to this means of maintaining loyalty.

Those are some good song choices for this chapter. I will add Love Hurts by Incubus into the mix

Love hurts...
But sometimes it's a good hurt
And it feels like I'm alive.
Love sings,
When it transcends the bad things.
Have a heart and try me,
'Cause without love I won't survive.

When you live in a world where the bonds of family are strong enough to destroy nations without such an oath, maybe you'll understand.

Equestria is one of those places, where noble houses command the highest level of power- and their families.

The only way to have a force that supersedes that is to have one that severs itself from all names but the nation's, and that being in this case the Diarchy or specifically, Celestia Herself. Sacrifice of what you hold dear has power. Olive is sacrificing her old life and is going to become a titan in her new one as a result, something she does because she knows the world needs a titan more than it needs Olive, Sumac's herdmate.

And now Sumac's gone and discovered just how much power you can put into an oath when you've got a Voice of Command (er, grift...yeah, grift). I think someone's getting a Very Special Episode next chapter. In any case, things like this aren't done just because some tyrant wants to make their own army, it's to have a force that can legitimately stand between powerful nobles and their private armies without bias or potential entanglements.

Less than a yard away, Pebble Pie was once again pulling off her impressive hippopotamus impression, though Sumac would never, ever compliment her for her magnificent mimicry, because he liked living.

Oh my god.

Sumac worried a bit, but not too much, because Olive was a big girl and she could take care of herself.

Also be careful about ever saying something like this out loud, too.

“Go to Canterlot, Olive,” he commanded, and the power of his voice caused strange, weird wibbles to manifest in the air around him, looking very much like the shimmers of rising heat. “Let your greatness be equal to your love for me. Become an Immortal Solar that rivals the very Sun for splendour!”

I'm always a little concerned when Sumac uses his powers. Ordering Olive to rival the very Sun for splendor, what could possibly go wrong?

I think that folks are missing a small point here. The point (I feel) is that Olive is joining a Militant Order... these are monastic(ish) warrior orders. Examples in our own history would be the Knights of the Temple, and the Knights Hospitallier (if you're more of a 40k fan think the Adeptus Astartes or the Sisters of Battle). The separation from all other ties is such that the postulant/member can completely focus on their training, improvement, and purpose. To wit, they need to focus on becoming the ideal weapon for the Power/diety they represent... Celestia in Olive's case.

Of course, one could point out the Spartan ideal, which was similar. Family was only there for making more Spartans. First loyalty was to the city-state, second loyalty was to your unit. Nothing else mattered.

Just my thoughts as a vet and amature armchair military historian. :)

I'd note that many of those are religious orders who were often used either to keep the peace between nations, or to deal with threats that came down on them all (invasions, etc.).

Given Celestia's often almost divine providence in this story-world, such orders reasonably end up devoted to Her or Luna.

8762203
Ergo the reason I stated powers/dieties. ;)

8762192
I was actually speaking from my point of view as a vet.:twilightsheepish:

8762346

Fair enough. I honestly just tagged you to keep ya in the convo, not as criticisim or dissent. :)

8762376
Oh, I know. It's all about perspectives.

8762420

I prefer 4d fractal myself....

I died a little.

My central question is why did she pick the Immortal Solars, out of all the Guard branches? And why would Celestia condone a branch of the guard that required their members to forsake all other ties, when friendship & love are things she values so highly? I can understand the reasoning that others have mentioned as to why such practices would exist, but why would Celestia specifically have her own, personal guard branch that works that way? Surely just knowing that the Immortal Solars exist would be a wound in her heart, what with their casting aside of something so dear to her.

8762537
No, it was that GOOD. I am very emotionally attached to your characters.

8762546
They have friendship and love with one another.

Some background.

The Immortal Solars aren't loyal to Equestria. They are loyal purely to Celestia, and exist as a seed collection for society. The best of the best, the very best that society has to offer. If Equestria burns to the ground, the Solars will be the ones who restart society. Celestia has experience in surviving the end of the world, and she knows what she didn't have last time. So the Solars remain loyal to her, and her agenda.

If you've read Ink, you've seen an alternate future where Celestia left. Guess who she took with her when she traversed the stars to look for a new home?

In the drastic event that everything collapses, the Solars are a means to jumpstart society so not everything has to be remade from scratch.

So much emotional whiplash.

Well, aside from her doing something to get herself in trouble we know Olive does fairly well in the guard overall. A bit confused about how far in the future House of the Rising Sunflower is from this since Olive seems to behave like she is in at least her mid to late 20s in that story (she treats Sundance like he is much younger than her).

I think I need to double check the timeline thread.

The summer part was so relatable, i hate the heat!

And also that facesitting quip, damn he's got it good sometimes. :rainbowlaugh:

Meanwhile, he's also got done bad times. Oof was this emotional. Also boneriffic. How dare you mix the two, you asshat. :raritycry:

Sumac, crushed between two fillies and one mighty large and rather pudgy griffoness, had this to say: “Olive you, Olive you so much.”

“Sumac Apple Lulamoon,” Olive whispered in response, “you are the worst of ponies.”

*happy sobbing*

Even though it hurt, Pebble smiled, a secretive little smirk that made the corner of her mouth curl up. Sweet Pea had two sisters; Cocoa Nib and Silver Button. When Pebble’s first letter had arrived, addressed to ‘Cocoa Nib,’ she had almost hyperventilated from hysteria. Silver Lining was too embarrassed and too shy to share her letters, but Pebble could imagine what they had to say.

...you always know how to make the most interesting euphemisms.

Ugh, another story finished, another glimpse into the bigger, weedier world. Thanks for the read.

Armed with her mother’s deadpan expression, Pebble moved with a slow but purposeful gait towards Sumac, who was being led along by Starlight Glimmer. He was blindfolded—again—because he had no doubt seared his retinas—again—and poor Starlight appeared as though she had gone for a walk through an active war zone. Vast patches of her pelt were gone, she had blisters, burns, abrasions, her mane crackled with static, she limped, and one of her eyes was almost swollen shut. Pebble knew the cause, and pitied her.

Constant, ongoing karma for her past actions in Our Town and in trying to stop the Rainboom. Capable of beating an alicorn in the combat? Well great, you get to do so when needed.

“Come back to me when you curbstomp a thousand-year-old evil or something.” Nostrils flaring, Twilight began to sniffle and her lower lip rippled in an odd, supple way. “Maybe save the world once or twice, and then we’ll talk.”

Combined with Sumac's instructions, great and terrible things in the future for Olive.

Sumac, crushed between two fillies and one mighty large and rather pudgy griffoness, had this to say: “Olive you, Olive you so much.”

“Sumac Apple Lulamoon,” Olive whispered in response, “you are the worst of ponies.”

God, no kidding.

“Cheer up, Pebble Pie.” Olive smiled, and her white teeth stood out in sharp contrast to her gold helmet. “Remember to keep practicing those angry kegels and then give Sumac exactly what he deserves when the time comes.” While the green filly spoke, her mother let out a sad, sniffling snicker, while her father averted his gaze.

Sumac is gonna die. Eventually.

“All of you who are leaving home this day,” Twilight said while her eyes darted around, “I thank you, and Ponyville thanks you. Go make friends! Discover the magic of camaraderie! In the guard, you are going to meet ponies and other creatures from all over the wonderful land of Equestria. They will have different customs, different ways, and they will talk differently too. Revel in it! Make the most of it! Those are the things that make friends extra special! Treasure what makes us different, and hold fast to what we all have in common!”

What Twilight could not dwell upon, but none the less could not help herself, were the invading thoughts of wondering; wondering among those young faces, of who would not be coming back.

I'm pretty sure the Weedverse version of Starlight actually killed some people before ending up at the village. She's not just Twilight's student, she's on probation and under watch.

Quite a moving story, Pebble's perspective at the end was particularly poignant.

8762563
8762546 I had similar thoughts about the Immortal Solars. Cadance, at least, seems like she would really resent this group that destroys all existing ties with the rest of society, no matter how necessary they are for the greater good.

With a splash, Megara came to the surface, gasping, and then while she spluttered, she waved at Olive.

For a moment I got Megara confused with Bucky's Fish Waifu.

EDIT: Come to think of it, is that story just on the back burner, or is it cancelled?

Well then! That was certainly a thing that happened! O.O;

Damn...talk about an emotional roller coaster.

Oh shit... I haven’t even read about Olive in months and that was still utterly heartbreaking. I remember asking why the guard would tear them apart, and now I got that answer. All previous obligations burned away? Shit man. So many universes have it but to have it happen to a character in this way where the friends for once won’t be with them. I’m crying man. This is heartbreaking.

Fuck...

8762537
YES!!! Oh my lord this hurts!

Beautifully written like only you can write but god damnit a part of me hates it! I feel like your characters, completely broken.

Good job. Even if I hate you for it. Good job.

Okay like, seriously. God damnit. I’m in a funk over this. I’m still crying. Like holy shit kudz. How do you do this?

It's been an emotional night, now I'm crying.

Silver Lining mewed; which Sumac thought was a strange sound for her to make, and then began to scratch her belly with her talons while kicking one hind leg. Distracted by her movement, Sumac stopped eating his apple as he watched the big pear-shaped griffoness’ enticing jiggles.

My man.
