Then again, you probably didn`t write this to be funny, so it wasn`t too important to keep the punchline obscured.
If by punchline, you mean surprise ending, then yeah, you're right. I wanted to make sure that the ending wasn't all that the story had to offer. A good parent's teachings can last beyond a parent's life and therefore maintain a connection with loved ones. I figure that observation wasn't too dusty to use, so I used it.
