Starlit Rose

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road? A: The answer is trivial and is left as an exercise for the reader.

Celestia thinks she raises the sun pretty damn well.
After all, it's what her demonic brainwashing omens of "destiny" cutie mark represents, right?

Yet apparently she can't keep track of the calendar system.
Which is largely based off of... her Sun.

What would this mean for the thousand year old prophecy?

The story was a bit messy, especially Twilight's letter, which seemed kind of spastic.

While the orange thing at the story's start was funny, I didn't really find much humor in anything else.

Best tip I can give: If you want to make something witty, you can't force it. It'll turn out very messy. Wit is opportunistic; build it around the situation.

I'm confused. What happened?

Truly one of the best things that's happened to me today.

Basically the prophecy about nightmare Moon isn't about nightmare Moon, but some other threat to Equestria that's still coming.

Hmm...

Maybe the Nightmare will come down from the Moon once more and possess... Luna again? Or Rarity?

Or maybe it's referring to Starlight's timeline-manipulation allowing Nightmare Moon to once more reign over an Equestria?

8444020
Uhh... Brilliant in meaning good story? Or is it sarcasm with Twilight's face, meaning the story was trash?

I think I'll take it as a compliment then. Feels much nicer.

8444033
Hey, thanks for pointing that out! I'd probably revise this story again, but in the meantime, which parts did you think were out of touch?
I think I have tried to force too many joke-lines into the story, so perhaps making the story more concise would be a good idea.

8444052
Eh, I'll see what I can come up with. But I'll probably fix this letter up before working on the response.

8444059
Ahh, sorry I didn't get to reply earlier. It's exactly like what 8444235 stated: Twilight finds out that the prophecy - which in the show foretold NMM - was actually referring to something else.

8444084
Thankyou!

8444235
Thankyou as well!

8444472
Hmmm... Interesting story ideas. I wasn't planning on doing that exactly, but we'll see.
On a side-note, what gave you the impression of it being the Nightmare specifically?

Also, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the different dashes working. I mean these:

-

I seem to be only able to do them in word and then copy over, so would someone kindly let me know how to do these within the fimfic site itself?

8444472
I must admit, those are wonderfully amazing thoughts that I completely support.

8444585
Brilliant story, though I was actually commenting on the events of the story with sarcasm. The story was amazing though, so feel free to take it as a compliment if you want.

Well interesting. The time was off by almost a year.. Could it have been the event was nightmare night since that is the second time Nightmare Moon "returned"?

8444585 Well, "the Mare in the Moon" was Nightmare Moon. As Twilight says, "unless you know of any other crazed mare who is bent on ruling over Equestria under the light of moon, I highly doubt that the prophecy is describing any other pony." With none of the other five Bearers or Spike able to fault her understanding of the nature of prophecy in Equestria, her interpretation does seem valid.

Now Nightmare Moon had two parts: Luna - who doesn't seem likely to conquer Equestria and bring about Night Eternal while she's in her right mind - and the Nightmare itself. So, the Nightmare is the obvious culprit.

Perhaps we're going to find out that Twilight's been wildly misinterpreting things about this prophecy's nature. Or, perhaps it'll turn out the prophecy did take into account Celestia's changes to the calendar and this's all for nothing. (After all, we did see "the stars will set her free" fulfilled on camera.) But right now, trusting Twilight's interpretation, these're my hypotheses.

Or, 8444645 has another wild and wonderful idea.

8445139
Damn. You already figured out who the threat was.
Curse you and your super analytical skills!

if celestia did manipulate the sun to decide when to release nightmare moon than that would mean she would also have to be in control of time itself as well.

or most likely just time since she can decide how fast a day moves.

her cutie mark could represent that too since the sun was the only way to tell time before people started inventing stuff.

The Tirek episode seems to disprove this though since we see the sun going all over the place when Twilight has to control it.

Or it could also mean Twilight is just that strong when juiced up on the other princess's magic and brute forced a celestial object into moving with her telekinesis. Since Celestia never actually showed her how to move it properly.

no wonder they didn't want Tirek to get all that alicorn magic.

*edit* i just realized It would also make Celestia omnipresent too if that were the case. one out of three ain't bad.

Maybe the length of the wait wasn't dependant on the amount of time that had passed after all. Maybe it was dependant on the arrangement of the stars... and Celestia deliberately triggered the release when she thought that a thousand years had passed, because she thought that Luna could be redeemed.

I really should be getting some rest instead of writing fanfics in the middle of the night.

Oh well, once ya go writing ya can never go back.:pinkiecrazy:

I didn't see that last twist coming! Good suggestion, Celestia - though I thought you were hinting at Twilight herself becoming a host for the Nightmare if, for instance, she keeps investigating things you'd rather stay hidden.

Nor did I see an ending this soon. But I agree; it's at a solid ending right now.

I can't think of any better use for the time I just spent reading this. Great job.

8444589 For the first one (en dash), press Alt and type 0150 on the numeric keypad. The second one seems to be the usual minus sign. You can also use Alt+0151 to produce em dash (—).

This is... Kinda pointless. Seriously, what's the point? Twilight finds a mistake in a prophecy. What's the point? Twilight apparently thinks Spike is a slave. What's the point? Celestia gets reasonably angry, and when mentioning Moondancer to Twilight, Twilight somehow doesn't know who Moondancer is.

...What's the point?

I've always interpreted things as the prophecy have come 100% true. The stars are Twilight, the one who escapes is Luna with Nightmare being the prison, and part about night time eternal refers to how long Luna will be bringing the nights to pass.

8445719
Don't worry, I knew most people wouldn't have like this ending.
But I have a reason for it, and I may reveal it soon, if I can get my lazy ass writing again.

8445905
Yeah, its a solid ending, and I didn't want it to lose its 'Comedy' tag by trying to bring in a severe level of conflict in the form of the nightmare.

8445929
Thank you!

8446025
Aw shoot, I have to press 5 keys to get the dash working? Damn, I'm too lazy for that. Thanks anyway!
Hmm, I don't even have a keypad anyway. Oh well.

8446090
You do realise this story was meant to be funny? I thought making the characters slightly OoC would add a humorous element to the story. As for the point of everything, well I guess you're just over-analysing it. This story isn't meant to be serious.

8446225
Eh, it wasn't really confirmed in canon.

8446472 If you're on Windows or Linux, you can also get the endash and emdash from Character Map. But IMO, that's even more awkward.

Hope to see the sequel, but I can completely sympathize with those writing problems.

8446472
Yes it isn't cannon which I why I used the word interpretation

8446472
I understand it was supposed to be a comedy, but it wasn't particularly comedic considering all the anti-social behavior between the characters. They're not just a little out of character, but plenty out of character. Seriously, in what world does Twilight hate Pinkie pie so much, or think Spike is a pathetic little slave meant to do her bidding? I've never found audacity, hatred or condescending behavior a good form of comedy. This story could use a major rewrite.

8446530
Eh, I see where you're coming from, but in all honesty, the fact that the characters aren't behaving like they should is what made it funny. Like how Celestia is focusing on her making a mistake instead of trying to find the bigger threat. Or how Twilight is ticked off at Pinkie for dragging her through practically Tartarus to get her to Goldie Delicious.
The Spike as a servant bit was just meant to be a simple gag. That I understand at being off. The rest?

Maybe I just have a different view on humour to you.

Thanks for the feedback anyway!

What if starswirl didn't see the future, but rather travelled there. So the thousand years wasn't so much a specific passage of time, but him just looking at the date on a newspaper for when nightmare moon came back and counting backwards.

I read this and proceded to start laughing in Geometry..... XD otherwise, loving it alot! gonna keep binge reading once schools out!!!!

This needs a random tag

“The Mare in the Moon, myth from olden pony times. A powerful pony who wanted to rule Equestria, defeated by the Elements of Harmony and imprisoned in the moon. Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape, and she will bring about night-time eternal!”

I first saw this several years ago & have believed it ever since
Look at Twilight’s Cutie Mark
Remember that more than 1 “her” escaped, including Princess Luna (& over half of Ponyville)
Remember that many nobles (& especially royalty) have a meaningless but poetic title or two
If you assume that one of Luna’s was “The Eternal Night” (or some such thing)
Then the “she” is obviously Twilight and
The entire prophecy was completely accurate, if a bit poetically expressed.

Otherwise, Nightmare Moon did NOT bring about eternal night & the prophecy was wrong
& hey, wrong is wrong, so it also screwed up the date

Do you remember a mare named, 'Moon Dancer?' You know, the pony which you abandoned on her birthday party just to read....(up)…. on a few books. Granted, your course of action led to the reformation of Princess Luna, but ever since then, have you given any consideration to her, or the rest of your Canterlot friends in that matter? The last I've heard of her is that she had become an alcoholic recluse who is filled with spitting jealousy at a certain lavender unicorn.
