A Day In The Rain

Rain poured down onto Canterlot City. A constant drizzling noise persisted as the rain flowed into the gutters, and overflowed onto the streets. It had rained the last several days, there was now concern of flooding.

Rainbow Dash covered her head as she tried to get out of the rain, she stayed close to the wall of a building trying to stay where it was dry. The bus stop was just a block up the street. If I run I can make it.

Rainbow Dash ran out from behind cover and sprinted to the bus stop. Her muscles screaming as she did so, she slipped and fell on her posterior. The entire back part of her pants was now soaked. Oh come on!

She got up and ran the rest of the way to the bus stop. Another woman was waiting there, she wore a raincoat and had an umbrella. Her skin was light yellow, she had pink hair.

“Oh dear! You’re soaking wet! Please, here share the umbrella with me.”

“Thanks,” Rainbow said moving close under the woman’s umbrella. “I’m Rainbow Dash.”

“Fluttershy,” the woman replied holding out her hand. Rainbow Dash shook it.

Rainbow looked around, nobody else was here. And it’d be a few minutes before the bus arrived.

“So, uh were you headed?”

“Hmm? Oh I’m just going to go pick up some groceries.”

“Cool. I’m just uh going to go pick up my niece.”

“You have a niece?”

“Well, no. She’s more like a friend of the family. And she’s younger than me, and calls me Aunt Rainbow, so I don’t know.”

Fluttershy giggled. “That actually sounds sweet. What’s her name?”

“Scootaloo. Yeah she’s thirteen. She uh, she wants to be a pilot when she grows up.”

“Really? What type of pilot?”

Rainbow shrugged. “Huh I don’t know. I guess she hasn’t thought that far ahead.”

“Well kids are sweet.” Fluttershy giggled.

“Yeah, yeah they are.”

The bus came, Fluttershy and Rainbow board. They sat next to each other. Rainbow took a closer look at the pink haired woman, she had a beautiful face. Her eyes were vibrant and lovely. Rainbow gulped.

“Hey do you need help with your groceries?”

Fluttershy looked up. “No, it’s alright. I couldn’t ask you to do that. Besides you have to go see your niece. Scootaloo right?”

“Oh well yeah, but I mean it’ll be okay. She won’t mind waiting for me for a bit. And besides you have to carry all those groceries home yourself? Let me help a girl out, okay?”

Fluttershy put her finger on her chin. “Alright, but I don’t want to make you late picking up your niece.”

Rainbow grinned. “Scootaloo? Nah, she won’t mind waiting a bit.” At least not if she sees me bring you home.

They got off at the next stop. Rainbow Dash followed Fluttershy to the grocery store. “I don’t have to get much, get the small cart please?”

“Right, right. So shopping for anything in particular?”

“Hmm? No just food for the week. Oh and I do have to pick up a present for my younger brother. His birthday is in a week.”

Rainbow walked in front of Fluttershy, pushing the cart. “Cool, I never had any siblings myself.”

“Really? Did you ever want any?”

Rainbow shook her head. “My parents were already overbearing with me being their only daughter. I don’t want to imagine what it would have been like if I had any siblings.”

“Well, Zephyr Breeze, my brother, he can definitely be a handful sometimes. But he’s also very sweet. He’s in his junior year of college.”

“Really?” Rainbow smiled. “Cool, cool. I uh sadly never finished college myself.”

Fluttershy patted Rainbow’s back. “That’s okay, everyone has a different calling, I’m only a veterinarian's assistant. But I love animals so I don’t mind.”

“Really you work with animals?”

“Yes-turn down this aisle please-I’ve always loved animals ever since I was a little girl.”

Rainbow Dash pushed the cart down the aisle. Avoiding the other shoppers as she did so. “So it’s like your calling then?”

“Yes, it really is. I just love animals. So I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was a little girl.”

Fluttershy grabbed some pasta off the shelf and put it in the cart. “Alright go two aisles over. Sadly though it turns out it requires a bit more work to be a veterinarian. I just wasn’t able to do that. But I still get to work with animals, so I really don’t mind.”

“I actually think that’s cool. I guess I never had much of a calling myself.”

“Really?” Fluttershy removed a strand of hair from her vision. They walked into the next aisle. Fluttershy looked on the shelves for what she needed.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I guess I wanted to be a pilot, a fighter pilot for the air force actually. But I injured my ankle my senior year of high school. I haven’t been able to run right since.”

“You played a sport?” Fluttershy asked, taking the tomato sauce of the shelf.

“Yeah, soccer. We were pretty good to. But somebody stepped on my ankle, their cleats tore my achilles tendon: did some pretty bad damage overall. I wasn’t able to play the rest of the year. Huh, my team made state that year.”

Fluttershy smiled gently. “That’s unfortunate.”

Rainbow shrugged, and started pushing the cart to the next aisle. “It’s okay. That was about nine years ago. I was just glad that my team won.”

“That’s good, it’s never good to hold grudges.”

“Yeah, I know. Just not good about that sometimes.”

Fluttershy chuckled. “That’s okay to, I try my best to not get angry with people. But even I slip up every now and then.”

Rainbow Dash smiled at the pink haired woman. “I couldn’t imagine getting mad at you.”

They finished shopping and Rainbow Dash helped carry the woman’s groceries home. Afterwards she took another bus to Scootaloo’s house, it had stopped raining by then.

“Aunt Rainbow!” Scootaloo yelled as Rainbow Dash gave her a hug.

“Hey kid.”

“Why were you late?”

“I uh, I was helping a woman with her groceries.”

“Helping her with her groceries?” Boe Hot Hoof asked, eyebrow raised. “You sure you weren’t trying to get this woman’s number?”

“Dad! No, I was just being nice.”

Rainbow Dash helped Scootaloo with her homework, and played with the purple haired girl for a little while. Afterwards she said her goodbyes and went to catch another bus. It started raining again. This sucks! Rainbow thought.

To her surprise she saw Fluttershy standing at the bus stop again. What’s she doing here?

“Hey, Fluttershy! What are you doing out here? Did you forget something?” Rainbow said running up to the other woman.

Fluttershy blushed. “No, Rainbow Dash I didn’t forget anything. I, I...I uh was hoping to run into you again.”

“Why?” Rainbow was getting soaked. Fluttershy held up her umbrella again.

“I, I forgot to thank you for helping me with my groceries.”

“Well, you’re welcome!”

“Of course...I just…”

Fluttershy dropped the umbrella, she pressed her lips into Rainbow’s. Rain poured down their faces, soaking wet. Rainbow pulled away, gently. Her mouth agape.

“Call me,” Fluttershy said, placing a card in Rainbow’s pocket.

Rainbow smiled. Yeah I’ll do that.

Rain continued to drench Canterlot City as Rainbow Dash took another bus home. She wasn’t upset this time. It was just another day in the rain after all.
