Common misconception. While twilight did in fact become the princess of friendship, and friendship is magic, magic is not friendship.
Friendship is in fact a previously undiscovered branch of relationship-related magic, similar to the much more explosive love magic. Friendship magic instead is a ray, similar to a laser blast. Both however are very good at making bubbles.
And while Twilight was and still is very skilled at magic, she was nowhere near a total understanding of it. Or friendship for that matter. She became a princess because Celestia was there when she died from being deatomized by friendship lasers (this was how she discovered them, in fact), and was brought back to life under the condition of taking care of all of Celestia's troubles from then on.
