This was a bit of a paradox. On the one hoof, it felt fast. On the other hoof, it's a one shot, so it's generally expected to be. On the third hoof, you seemed to convey that this has been a long time coming, with the thematic phrase carrying many different undertones each time it was spoken.
And on the fourth hoof, this truly felt like a slow burn between them, a smooth escalation from start to finish, even though it was short on length. Very well done.
Some word choice seemed a bit odd, but nothing was glaring. Nothing that really took me out of the moment. And that is as good as one could ever really ask for. You get a follow on this!

You sir/madam have my appreciation and thanks for your analysis and review. I did try to strike a balance between wordiness and decisive action, I think I may have leaned just a tad too far on the latter. And, as my own editor pointed out, the language did seem somewhat stilted.

Reminds me of when I was younger. My parents drove up to the mountains in their Xterra with leather seats during the middle of a snow storm. Coming back, I was terribly cold, but said nothing. I didn't realize how bad it was until, half-way home, I found I couldn't stop my teeth from chattering. By the time I did make it home, I nearly collapsed had to remain in bed with a fever for the next few days.
