Long ago, before the fall of Princess Luna, before the rule of Discord, there existed another race of pony; The lamia, or snake ponies, feared by all of pony kind as mighty hunters and predators. When the Two Sisters rose to power, no longer able to stand by and watch as the lamia preyed on their subjects, they decided to put an end to the lamia’s reign of terror. Leading their army straight into the capital of the lamia they slew their leader, along with any lamia they encountered along the way.

Using a shapeshifting ability gifted to them by an ancient relic, the scattered remnants of the lamia managed to stay hidden for over a millennium. In the rare case that one of their kin was discovered, they were hunted down and persecuted without so much as a trial. Adapting to the lifestyle of the ponies, the lamia live in constant fear of one day having their true identity discovered.

Tired of living in constant fear, of hiding from her neighbors, and not caring about the consequences of being caught, one lamia decides to leave home and move to a friendly little town in the center of Equestria. Little does she know that something as small as moving to another town could set off a chain of events that will change relations between the lamia and the ponies forever...

Wow, I wasn’t expecting this to get featured. Congratulations, I think I’ll give it a read, I suppose.

her ovular pupils

“Ovular” means “pertaining to the plant part that contains the embryo sac and hence the female germ cell, which after fertilization develops into a seed.” Did you mean “oval”?

8214006
*Pictures Silvia with plant eyes* No, nope, uh uh, no. That is not what I meant at ALL. xD thanks for pointing that out, it’s meant to mean that her pupils are more oval thank circular.

Changelings.

For a race of shapeshifting monstrousities who have mastered infiltration, espionage, and assassination (character and otherwise) they are not all that subtle.

snakes tend to have slitted pupils, or at least thats the ideal that I was going off of when i wrote this (venemous snakes tend to have slitted pupils, with the exception of the Coral Snake) think kinda in between. Not fully circular, but not slitted either.

Looking good so far, though the Alt Uni tag may be called for.

Pretty sure that the canon spelling is windigo, but since that is apparently also an acceptable spelling of the Algonquian mythological being, it seems fair to assume the door swings both ways and that wendigo is fine for the MLP mythology.

Carry on! Or change it, as you prefer!

8214829
I went with the mythological spelling, as I wasn’t sure on the canon spelling.

This continued for almost a century before the two sisters, Celestia and Luna Solaris, appeared. Blessed with the traits of all three pony races and wielding extremely powerful relics of pure harmonic magic, Celestia and Luna managed to push Discord back, eventually sealing him in a stone prison during their final confrontation.

So... clearly defining the snekpones as not being a pony race?

8215125
just a reminder that this is an account written from the ponies point of view. Whether or not I consider them a race of ponies is irrelevant, as according to everything we’ve heard from the ponies themselves there are only 3 races.

Two things if I may be so bold. First, what inspired you to write about lamia ponies given most people really don't acknowledge them. And second, also more of a joke than a question, how did you manage to make me hate Twilight and Luna so much so fast. I mean Luna straight up murdered a bunch of children because “A couple ponies hurt my sister. I am mad now!” and Twilight refused to entertain the very possible reality of her living in Silvia’s old house. How did she get the key? Why would she have chosen the library over several more convenient places example Applejack’s barn? How she have known where everything was beforehand? I'm not nitpicking so don't take any of this one seriously, but wow, just wow Twilight.

8215776
Twilight will be redeemed! And as for Luna, well... all I’ll say is the attempted assassination on her sister is just what set her off. Without looking at the prologue again I don’t want to say anything else, for fear of spoiling things.

8215792
Not saying you have to do this but maybe have Luna acknowledge she took it too far. Also, what inspired you to write about lamia ponies? I'm legit curious.

8215776
And I forgot to answer the first question... lol

The inspiration for the story came from a drawing prompt thingy by The Spirits Demise. She asked, in a Discord server we share, for something to draw. The first thing that popped into my mind was “Snake Pony” for whatever reason. Between the two of us we ended up designing Silvia, and soon enough we had a finished OC that other people in the server seemed interested in. With the interest in the OC, I decided to go ahead and write a back story for her and her race, and that backstory turned into the prologue. With urging from people on the server, I continued from there and currently have a couple chapters backlogged, with more planned out.

8215820
Sweet. I just find it interesting how the various writers on this site get inspired. Some get inspired by a drawing, some by their favorite games or movies, or some like me just randomly think something up and hope it works. Looking forward to the upcoming chapters.

I saw this on the feature tab and I knew I had to read it and I was not disappointed. So far this has been really good and I eagerly await more!

8216657
Thanks! Anything, in particular, you liked/disliked about it?

You mention that the lamia traded with, and implied a good relationship with ponies up until the windigoes.

At what point did they suddenly start mutilating and eating ponies?

8216771
It’s a change that occurred when they were separated from the ponies by the magical ice age brought on by the Wendigos. There wasn’t much info given on what exactly happened on the lamia side of things, as this history book was written from a ponies perspective. Bits and pieces of the truth will leak through as the story progresses! ;)

If Twilight has been in Golden Oaks for a year and a half, where has Silvia been all that time, and how does she still have a key? Wouldn't you change the locks when you move into a new house?

The consistency issues inherent in this story do bug me a bit.

8216774
Here's the problem.

Was the lamia eating and mutilating ponies before the windigoes a thing? Yes or no?

If not, what sort of fundamental change in nature to the lamia caused them to start eating ponies in the span of several generations? Which, for perspectives sake, can be chalked down to 200years at most.

The story is reliant on a huge suspension of disbelief, and hinges on your reason of "we don't know what happened to the lamia". It's... a bit of a cop-out.

Detailed below is the history of one race in particular, a race that, during the rule of Discord, became feared as a savage group of pony eaters. Detailed below is what little we

Word repetition.

In just a few shorts years Luna lead multiple successful campaigns against the lamia

"led"

Interesting opening, I'll give it a try since I like comedy.

No, no it was not.

The kind of fundamental change where a religious zealot usurps the throne and instates a “do as we do or die” kind of rule. They had always been meat eaters, they just never viewed the ponies as food. When this new ruler took over, he instated laws based on a God that required the sacrifice of others to appease. They built shrines in His honor using the bones of other sentient races they had eaten.

The story is reliant on a huge suspension of disbelief, and hinges on your reason of "we don't know what happened to the lamia". It's... a bit of a cop-out.

It was never meant to be a cop-out, it was never meant to keep from telling you. I was purposefully only giving half truths, and a single-sided view of the situation to try and get people thinking “Wait, this doesn’t add up... what the hell actually happened?” I was trying to use it as a hook. I know exactly what happened, I have it all written down. By the time this story ends, everyone reading will know what happened too.

If Twilight has been in Golden Oaks for a year and a half, where has Silvia been all that time, and how does she still have a key? Wouldn't you change the locks when you move into a new house?

Silvia had gone back home to help care for a sick relative, and between the relative being sick, and travel time by foot, it took her a while to go there and back. She still has a key because it was never supposed to be a permanent move but the idiot in the mayor's office (before Mayor Mare) didn’t really believe in a thing called paperwork, so she was expecting to come back to an empty library. In ur society, yes you would change a lock when you move into a new house. In their society, which is a lot more open and trusting, I like to imagine that as long as the door closed and latched, they wouldn’t worry too much about the lock. It was a government building prior to Twilight getting it, as far as any of them were concerned they had the only keys because again, lack of paperwork means they didn’t know Silvia kept a key.

I've been looking for a good Lamia story for a while and it looks like I've found one, keep up the great work!

8216798
The repetitiveness was purposeful, meant to draw attention to the fact that “hey, this is what ponies know. This is what ponies have written down as what happened.

Fixed the “lead, led” typo, thank you very much for pointing it out!

Residents of the town should be able to back Silvia's story up. Twilight might have even heard about a pony that ran the library before her. Basically all of Twilight's friends should be able to tell her that Silvia ran the library before she arrived, which would lend credence to Silvia's claim. Now I want to know what happened in the 6 or so months that led to Mayor Quill disappearing and Mayor Mare taking his place.

8216757
Your writing style is pleasing to the eye, and I have not read a good lamia story yet. Your backstory seems well thought out and you had a believable and quick way to introduce your character to twilight and spike. Also it's snake pone!

8216847
you could always ask pinkie, she knows everyone who ever lived in ponyville

8216786 I would say spoilers but we’re talking about ponies :rainbowlaugh:

It’s kinda hard to sympathize with a species that was viciously eating you in the past... especially when that species is sapient, and knows your species is sapient, and STILL treats you like meat.

It’s akin to trying to find reasons to sympathize with the orcs from LoTR.

History is written by the victors... unless it isn’t. Sometimes the losers write history too. And they tend to lie ALOT. We have plenty of examples of rulers who claimed victories in locations where archaeology proved they’d had their rumps handed to them.

Any-who, I find it kinda doubtful Celly would wipe out a species without due cause. I mean, hell, this is the idiot who decided to randomly reform Discord, the most powerful enemy in Equestria, for a totally obtuse and undefined reason. She’s too nice for her own good. Couldn’t even stop the Bugpony Queen. So lame. Saitama would’ve squished Chryssi in an instant!

:trollestia:

Sergeant Major Strike, being grabbed by one of these vile beasts and swallowed whole, her muffled screams heard even as the snake ponies disappeared back into mountains.

This act needs to have a really long and erotic description... for historical accuracy! Totally for that. >_________________>

lol, vore :pinkiecrazy:
