What the-- oh my didn't see that coming
I think my heart stopped as soon as I saw the picture....should have put it down a little further. you can see it before you read it!!! also...WHAT!!!!

That was partially the point, I wanted that moment of "no! It can't be!? CAN IT!?" kind of deal.
8815537
Think back to early points in the story and you'll actually realize this was foreshadowed to many times. ;)
8815577
well congratulations....just as I was beginning to like shimmer too...DAMN YOU AND YOUR FANTASTIC STORYTELLING!!!! I havn't been this upset since I read the enchanted library
theres so many names i want to call you right now but i dont want to be banned or jeopardize the chance to keep reading this.
Whoo boy, this is gonna stay with me for a while
Pardon me, I just need to pick this jaw up off the floor real quick. I mean... dang.

Shimmer was a character that I had a difficult time creating. I didn't want her to be an exact clone of Sunset, but I wanted her to share some of her faults but take them to different places. Shimmer was from the get-go a very untrusting girl, and difficult to get close to. However there were many instances in the story where the reader isn't supposed to like her, I wanted that conflict where you never TRULY knew how to feel about her all the time.

Shimmer's death was planned almost a year ago when writing out the draft for the story. When the idea first came up, I actually spent a good month or so mulling over if I actually wanted her to die or not, but ultimately it was written in that she was to die in the end of Act II. This meant that Act III-VII were going to take a different shape. Ultimately what we got actually was different from how it originally was going to happen.
It was a decision that I knew would cause some reactions for sure. Fear not though, her death was not without purpose as Act III-VII will show you.

Well you did an amazing job, this has become one of my favorite stories ive read since i got into the fandom
Well that was a surprise.
I gotta say though, if her death was meant to have any kind of emotional impact it sort of lost that after you spent the last few chapters making us hate her. If we were meant to feel bad about it you probably should have a waited a little longer before pulling the trigger on that twist.
That's just my opinion though.

There is no 100% intended emotion I expected anyone to feel. I knew some would feel bad, some wouldn't. Shimmer was always intended as a polarizing character where some would like her and others would not.
*bleep*
So Sunset indirectly caused another death by coming back from Equestria since it seems someone wants to kill her.
It's not her fault cause Shimmer sacrificed herself on her own accord but still it won't be good for her mental health.

Remember, at the time the two were wearing identical outfits. Shimmer may have been the target the whole time too.
8816318
The assassin seemed awfully sure that the target was dead and they must have seen that there were two Sunsets.
At least thats what I got from the last part.
8816331
We'll just have to wait and see. I do hope you'll enjoy what unfolds!
Sh-Shimmer? No... Oh God no... *Darth Vader voice* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I reread this chapter and a thought hit me.
While Sunset and Shimmer have been treating each other as sisters, the grief is going to be off the charts when it hits Sunset that she actually just witnessed herself get murdered right in front of her. How's that for an existential crisis?
8826085
Your sister died... AND you died.
Whoooooooa.
Well now I feel like a jerk
8827273
Shit happens.
It's all good though! You got what you wanted... Kind of?
8827527
Ya but not that kind! of slug
8827534
Well tomorrow you get to see what happens only minutes after the shooting as we set up for Act III. This time there are two intermissions, but both are longer than Intermission I.
OH MY GOD! THEY KILLED KENNY...err I mean Shimmer.
Holy shit.
Okay, finished the second act, but I don't think I'm gonna continue, due to my desire to deck Shimmer's corpse in the bean.
Seriously, what she did was just asinine. It's not enough that she makes decisions for Sunset that affect the rest of her life, but she emotionally manipulates everyone. As soon as someone starts to argue, she goes "I know. I know you hate me for ruining your lives, but you need to think about how I feel! My parents are dead and I'm sad! My feelings are more important than anything else! Boo hoo hoo!" Cry me a friggin' river. And even when you resolve it, she gets off the hook. She faces no comeuppance for trying to rule her counterpart's life. Also, there's no way Twilight would be dumb enough to just agree to her conditions. I'm sorry, but I can't get past that.

I mean you're free to do as you like but actually consider it from both sides.
Sunset just comes to this world uninvited, and against anyone's wishes (Celestia's included) and doesn't care what happens to the residents of said world. She then finds out that her actions resulted in Shimmer's parent's deaths. There is no way to frame it any other way, Sunset's arrival fucks up Shimmer's entire life to a degree. She's not in a position to argue. Shimmer has a point, Equestria IS where Sunset belongs, she has caused nothing but damage in the human world and Twilight agrees because she accepts that they don't understand much about the human world. They have just been meddling in it and using it as a dumping ground in the past for magical beings without much care for its residents.
When Twilight considers how their meddling has affected people in that world she is in a position where she can't disagree with Shimmer's request. Twilight is not arrogant enough to think she knows what's best for the human world than humans do. On top of that, Twilight recognizes how much Shimmer was hurt by all of this and she feels empathetic toward that. I feel it makes sense that she'd go along with it to try and end the damage done by her kind. She doesn't want to cause more conflict.
Also... Shimmer came back to awkwardness between her and her friends and then dies before ever really making things right, I would hardly consider that "no consequences".
Also consider Shimmer's perspective: Sunset came to the human world and effectively made decisions that affected Shimmer's life without consent. I would wager a decision that caused my parents to die outweighs not being able to see your friends. To further this point remember: Shimmer is emotionally damaged and has poor social conditioning. She spent most of her life in solitude with little interaction with other people. She became manipulative as a defense mechanism, but that's something you don't find out until Act IV where you get another glimpse into details we have yet to see.
I mean you are free to stop reading, I won't stop you because you can't please everyone, but I figured I'd at least try to offer an explanation. I appreciate the time and feedback you've given though.
im not sure how i feel about this as i was enjoying the family stuff and wanted to see more of that i wanted to see more of there lives and where they would go
WOW
Why do I have a feeling she's going to regret it?
Edit: just finished the chapter and damn I didn't see it coming.
