Necessary, not exactly. The story itself is pretty well going to be self contained. There's a few references that might come about in later chapters, and of course the big one about the Wedding in the first chapter, but that's about it. So, you can read this on its own and be fine.

So, Applejack is herded with Cadance and Shining Armor? Why not? Twilight is herded with Rainbow Dash and Big MacIntosh. At least neither big brother can complain about the stallion their sister was going to marry.

Nice observation. I swear, you're much quicker to pick up on things than me at times. And right now it seems to me that only Fluttershy's left. Spike's with Rarity, Big Mac has RD and Princess Twilight, Pinkie's at Sugarcube Corner with her stallion and kid cockblocking Pound and Pumpkin at every opportunity, and as this story kinda points to it, Applejack's with the Crystal Family. It's still TBD as far as Fluttershy goes...

There should be more mares and other females in the Royal Crystal Herd at this point, considering we are talking about Cadence, the Alicorn of Love, and Shining should have a more open mind, I mean clearly, he can benefit in being a better Guard captain and being royalty. But hey, we get to enjoy the Earth Belle, Applejack's very peculiar adventure...

Now to see Shining Armor's more than obvious answer to herding... Needs more mares in this Crystal Apple Pie that Earth Pony is gonna be more than they can handle.
