Expanding on this thought, since King Sombra ruled the Crystal Empire prior to Nightmare Moon, and if Rainbow had this magic but didn't know how to control it until she met King Sombra...maybe Rainbow has been faking her age when she met Fluttershy years later, and did the Sonic Rainboom to earn her cutie mark again? Such a detail like the Sonic Rainboom wasn't documented and went down in history only as a myth. It would explain how Rainbow existed around the time of Sombra's reign, and the dark magic might be what keeps her alive and looking like a young mare. Just an idea to help with the backstory. ^^;;

Seems interesting. Although I do have a question about this line.
When the mane 6 went to the Crystal Empire for the first time in the show, they didn't bring the elements with them, and Twilight wasn't a princess yet. If this is supposed to be at some point after season 6 (which I don't think it is, because other parts imply Cadance just took over the place for the first time) then why would they take the elements out of the tree?

In this universe, I imagined that the elements were never really locked up, and they stayed with the mane 6, granting them ready-to-acess super powers in a way.

Well, I am currently in the process of writing the second chapter.
I wonder if Rainbow would attempt to seduce Twilight over to Sombra's side due to the events of the Crystal Empire occurring shortly after the end of the Canterlot Wedding. Why? At this point in the timeline, this is second time in Twilight's life that she has been at her lowest and it would not be far-fetched (or surprising) to assume that Twilight does has some lingering doubts and festering anger about Celestia. Another question, how does Rainbow feel about her 'friends'? Are they just merely a means to an end to her or do they truly have meaning to her?
