Sequels1

It seems like Princess Celestia always gets to make all the choices around the palace without consulting her co-ruler. And that includes what they have for dessert. Well Luna isn't going to take it lying down anymore. Now they must play a foal's card game to decide what they will have after dinner. Will Princess Celestia be able to handle this challenge?

For me an dmy bro it was Brawling (Bakugan) For internet, witn an actuall Bakugan Battle Field and toys

“Now, Constellar Pleiades, attack Goroth!” declared Luna. Pleiades lifted its weapon, sending golden lighting at Goroth destroying him and dropping Celestia’s life points to 6650. “I end my turn.”

After this section, the rest of the story has been accidently written in italics. This has happened to me before so don't feel bad:twilightsmile:.

That said, this was quite a entertaining story. It's always good to see a decent pace of YGO stories popping up on this site. I guess it has to do with the hype of Dark Side of Dimensions coming this Friday:pinkiehappy:.

Chuckles, "Fun story. Not great, but fun. I think the main problem is me, I'm not a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan, so the battle scenes are kinda boring, but I'm sure a fan would be tickled pink with it. Beyond that, the issues are minor, he instead of her at least once, and similar mistakes. Also unless this is a higher tech alt universe with video games and all, I would've done more to make the game work in the established MLP universe. The nice thing about a magic heavy universe is that such adaptions are easy, crystal powered toys with illusion casting spells for example (I think its more fun when its clearly toys rather than the artifacts of the show) based on a comic book. Still, thumbs up here since it won't let me vote (I guess that function is tied to views and-or comments)."

7892728 well, I am sure I mentioned the duel disks here use magic gems to make them work.

7893399
Indeed, I think I recall you mentioning it, but it didn't feel like it explained it in such a way to distinguish it from the magic in the show or from a machine, hence my confusion. No biggie, I just like things spelled out I suppose.

Hmm, have you considered another chapter or a sequel? Now that they're no longer using the game to fight, I can imagine them using it to deal with annoying petitioners or confuse the nobles. Imagine the two claiming to be at loggerheads over a simple matter that shouldn't require the court, so one challenges the other to a duel to settle it. Basically its an excuse to have a little fun, and also make fun of those wasting the Sun Court's time.

7893651 I have and maybe I'll do it for fun at a later time. I'm reaching the end of The Thousand Year Change right now. This was something that I was working on for almost a year or so in my spare time

awesome writing. it felt like a yugioh episode and an mlp episode!

This was fun. It's funny how Celestia didn't realize how flawed her first deck was. Great how it ended.

7892728
It was a fun read. But the problem I had was Celestia. Mainly her deck since it felt very ooc. Luna's monsters made sense since they are based on constellations. But Celestia, her deck just felt similar to Luna's in appearance but nothing other than the light part to reflect on herself. Maybe a shaddoll deck would have been better

i like this story and using Crowley's style of duel disk instead of the original. the bit with celestia having only magic cards is funny (and despite twilight you can make a viable deck with only magic cards you just have to be EXTREMELY creative to do so)

just one thing.

“Sister,” said Celestia looked around the room. “What is going on here?”
Luna grinned as she pointed a hoof at her sister. “Celestia, I challenge you to a duel!” announced Luna.
“What?” stated a deadpanned Celestia as she did her best to try and comprehend what was happening. She wasn’t the only one surprised by this. The guards couldn’t hide the shock of this announcement before leaning in a bit closer in excitement.
“The rules are simple,” continued Luna, head held high. “We shall play one round of Yu-Gi-Oh with our own decks. No pre-made ones allowed. Winner gets to decide what we will have for dessert tonight. The guards gathered today shall act as our witnesses.”
Celestia blinked. “You want to play me in a foal’s card game over…dessert?"

this sums up the entire yugioh anime in a nutshell and i love it

the ONLY issue i have is why lightsworns of all types i understand the constellors , being based off stars and galaxy's would have made sense. maybe maldoche (love of sweets) or legendary plants/ agents of creation combination

8001973 Yeah. half way through the story I began to have second thoughts about Celestia's deck. I actually thought about changing it to a shaddoll deck since their decks, in appearance, were similar. However I decided to 'dig in my heals' and make this work.

I also enjoyed giving Twilight a non spellcaster deck which was something that hasn't really been seen before.

One thing I am thinking about for the future is having a Twilight vs Sci-Twi duel just for laughs

8002359 yeahhh I don't see Celestia using shaddolls since their theme is puppetry and a virus in one again her using agents of creations would have worked better in my opinion stars and galaxy's vs planets and their creators.

Personally even if you use out lightsworns you missed a big opportunity not to have her play supremacy sun.

As for twilight vs sci-twi that would be fun and I'm predicting it's going to start over something just as stupid as "which dessert should be served" because come on the anime had just as stupid reasons

Also as advice for THAT duel have sci-twi have something of school based deck like say.....Deskbots

8002375 I was planning on something sci-fi, but nerdy in a different way.

8002382 ........A gradius/video game deck since now they have new support (b.e.s mk3 and a field spell) or am I not privy to guess?

8002391 It was a deck seen on Legacy of the Worthless.

8002419 .....aliens? or ally of justice?

oh also there having a tournament on legacy of the worthless to see the best of the worst

8002423 I know.

Guess it won't be a problem to tell you but it will be Genex Ally

8002423 One more thing, The duel will be more...tame. More of the comedy will be coming from the side lines as I try to keep the two Twilight's being, well, Twilight.

That was one of the fun yet challenging things about this story: trying to mesh the two shows in a way that made sense.

8002479 genex hmmm ok i like genex would prefer b.e.s deck but genex is fine for me i just hope it's entertaining like this story

8002569 Another thing I was thinking about was a Sunset Duel or one with the CMC

8004709 that sound like a good idea sunset maybe dinos as for the cmc you can do the duel celestia saw the end of but showing the entire duel

I think I know how to play the comedy for the zweiTwi Duel...

It rapidly becomes a best-of 'Trixie' duel - 'Who can spam the greatest 'Card Effect' combo?'

With announcers Trixie and Flutters - yeah, Fluttershy doing the 'Solomon Muto' role of 'All knowing card master' commentating.

Ending with AliTwi managing a OTK 'Horakhty' summon.

Ah, Lightsworns for Celestia. A classic choice. I feel like a Monarch deck would fit her pretty well, too. Lots of tributing effects.

Nice one-shot!
I sure would like a sequel with Twilight duelling Cadance!

Imagine if they battled with Pokemon.

8002569
Didn't know if you knew or not but the sequel is out

This was pretty fun!

“Well, at least it’s not chocolate,” smiled Celestia. “But tomorrow, could I…”

“Of course,” said Luna. “ There’s no reason why we both have to have the same cake each night. I’m sure chef Sea Ram will enjoy the challenge.

Then is it safe to say they both got... their just deserts?

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

8872386
I could have sworn it was simply when it was destroyed

nicely done; also:

Sweetie Belle, however, had no monsters nor life points. In fact, she looked like she was about to cry. And moving towards the small unicorn was Twilight, who also wore a duel disk.
“Sorry Sweetie Belle,” Celestia heard Twilight say in a comforting tone. “You did the best you could. But next time you shouldn’t leave all your monsters in attack mode like that.”
“I know,” said Sweetie Belle. “But I thought my trap card would protect me!”

wait, you mean we're NOT going to see what Sweetie Belle's deck is like? BOO!!
while I'm at it, let's see how the shown decks match up with the characters that wield them:

  • Celestia: Lightsworn: not the most original, as I've seen this done before, but I have to admit that it's better then the deck made up entirely of Spell Cards that we see in the beginning
  • Luna: Constellar: seems to fit her personality...in the here and now: I can't really see Nightmare Moon wielding this type of deck, though seeing how they ARE technically two separate personalities, it makes sense, and I suppose that just means that the author did their job of making me curious; good job, Darthvalgaav: have a cookie: files.abovetopsecret.com/files/img/mj52cbd461.jpg
  • Cadance: Crystal Beast: a bit more surprised that this angle isn't used more often then anything else; that doesn't make it bad, but it threw me through a loop, you know?
  • Twilight Sparkle: Red Eyes/Armed Dragon: seeing how she's raised Spike, I can see her making a deck out of the theme of dragons growing up into more powerful versions of themselves; not much else to say except I like this: I like this a lot
  • Applebloom: Naturia: seems to fit her well, though that DOES raise the question of what sort of decks her siblings have, which I'm sure was Darthvalgaav's intention in the first place; good job, buddy: have yourself another cookie: eleventhstack.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/chocolate_chip_cookies.jpg
  • Scootaloo: Gusto: not what I expected, but seeing how much she idolizes Rainbow Dash, I suppose it fits; makes me curious what sort of deck her honorary big sister is carrying, but not a deal breaker for me; good job, Darthvalgaav: mobiledevmemo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/173572251_Chocolate-chip-cookie.jpg

now if you'll excuse me, I need to make sure I haven't run out of cookies 😅

Just yugioh in general. Please be sure to check out all of my other yugioh stories

8873524 8872787
Yeah, they're right. Security Orb is only activated from Spell/Trap cards.

Also, I'm surprised Celestia had 3 Wulfs in her deck, but not a single Felis. Felis' are a welcome edition in any Lightsworn deck.

*Passionate Duelist intensifies*
Also...

“H-How could you summon three monsters in one turn?” demanded Celestia as she stomped a hoof against the ground. “That has to be against the rules!”

I guess Luna has money?

9184787
twilight most likely kept things simple for poor celly. felis, while a good card in the more sychro spam builds was possibly left out because celestia didn't know any of the extra deck mechanics outside of tributing due to time constraints

9008704
applejack would have sylvans

rainbow dash would have F.A's

9276586
(shrugs) seems legit, though we'll have to wait and see

9276613
You're right about Celestias deck. I wanted to give her something easy to master for the moment. In the next story I write, she will be using a different deck.

But i have been thinking of some bonus chapters for this story. More like shorts.

As for the other two decks they went be what you expect...but they will make sense

9276627
hmmmm is it

vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/yugioh/images/9/98/VylonOmega-TF06-JP-VG.png/revision/latest?cb=20111014083800

seems like something she'd use. i might make a videotalking about which deck the characters would use

9276695
In Dueling for a Chance I gave Rarity that deck and I would like to let each character have their own.

9276760
Darn didn't read that one yet. Since I just finished doing a review on this story (check out my channel) I'll have to read it tomorrow (or when I get through sonata's story and the ever free duel)

9276766
Oh, Dueling for a Chance is set in Equestria with ponyfied cards

Another user's recommendation send me the way of your fics, so I decided to start with the first one, see what I found.

The results were... mixed. Where to begin...

There's lots of interesting ideas in here done well. Celestia trying (and failing) to make an all-spell card deck her thing was kind of hilarious. Most deck choices made sense as far as matching the character that uses them, though I think I've seen enough Lightsworn by now between various fics to last me... not a lifetime, but certainly a good while. The conflict is suitably hilarious, starting all over the choice of served dessert, though the thing at the end where it's revealed to be all a misunderstanding could have been better foreshadowed (it was a little, just not enough), rather then coming out of left-field.

The general idea of the story, though, that it's supposed to show us Celestia's progression, kind of falls a little short. It starts strong, between her two early losses, her observation of the CMC with Twilight, and Twilight's evaluation of her deck. And then... it just cuts to her challenging Luna to a rematch. Even here, there are touches that show she's still learning, like the wrong choice of monster to destroy by an effect. And while there is some comedic effect produced by doing it this way, I honestly would have preferred even a little discussion/training between Twilight and Celestia.
In fact, this whole story begs to not be a one-shot, but be spread out over a couple of chapters instead. Not only would the action be better segmented between different events, but parts could get a little more space to breathe too.

Also, the story starts off seemingly intended to be suitable for those who barely know anything about Duel Monsters, in terms of easing us in. However, this vanishes very quickly, and is replaced almost instantly with very high-level play that basically requires the viewer to know every card, due to shortened explanations (I know the rules and strategies perfectly, but there's tons of cards in the era since GX I don't know about). Is this a problem? No - but the quick change kind of is. In fact, the prose of how the duels are written isn't the easiest to keep up with, with uneven balance between visual and gameplay descriptions, rough tonal changes between turns, and so on. It was just enough that partway through the lengthy second Celestia Luna duel, I gave up trying to keep track of their hand cards, cards in play, and so forth, deciding to leave that to the story. The prose itself was a times a little remote, a bit more Yu-Gi-Oh then Pony, as far as being warm and cuddly and intimate with the characters.

Past that, no explanation is given for Duel Monsters being such a big deal. Not like I expect a full-blown explanation, but some nods in that direction would have been nice.

Did I still enjoy the story? I suppose so, yes, and there's more little touches too; the CMC learning from Twilight once again was pretty good, and her giving them advice during their three-way battle royale was a sweet touch. And I did enjoy it enough to move on to the next one, and see how it fares. My main hope is that, since this one is almost two years old, that the stories' problems highlighted above improve with each instalment (and, they really should be all one story, not several separate but tightly-connected one-shots). Guess I'll find out. Though my biggest hope is better prose quality (it's more then decent here, to clarify), as well as not being so concentrated on the high-level mechanics of the duelling to the point of being tricky to follow and potentially alienating to those of us that aren't currently Yu-Gi-Oh competitive players.

9423481
To be honest, this was my first Yugioh story since the late 2000's and it was never intended to spread out.

To answer your first point, why didn't I show Celestia going more into learning how to play, was that I had already had Celestia duel at least twice prior to that and had shown her fail. I thought about maybe having her go over with Twilight the basics, but decided against it. I figured that anyone reading this story should know at least the rules of the game. As for the last duel, I had Celestia make that mistake intentionally because even after a short time with Twilight Celestia was still a rookie.

The overall tone was to take the elements of both shows and mix them together. One being from the GX era of solving every problem with a duel (surprisingly that has stayed in the show somewhat) and MLP's issue of just having a conversation might solve the problem before it esculates. Still glad you enjoyed it

it's not attack position, it's attack mode! also did Celestia put the first card face down? in attack mode? in defense mode? on a beast?

9482677
Why are you asking if Celestia has any bucking idea of what she's doing? Pretty obvious she doesn't.

This is…sad, thought Cadence as he life points dropped to 7500. But maybe she has some strategy in mind that I just don’t see.

Like Joey Wheeler. Not only is he from New Jersey, but his deck started out as just monsters.

hey guys i forgot what pot of greed does
