Research and True Feelings

Research and True Feelings.

Twilight sat idly by as Rarity kindly asked her customers to leave. She apologized and even offered discounts. Twilight tried to tell her she could come back, but Rarity wouldn't have it. Twilight now sat, sipping the tea she had been offered while the fashionista emptied her shop. It did, however, give Twilight time to think of the questions she would ask her friend.

The soft click of the boutique’s door pulled Twilight from her thoughts. Soon Rarity sat down across from her with a gentle smile, “It’s so good to see you outside that dreaded hospital. You gave us all quite a fright there,Twilight.” Twilight’s ear ell flat as she glanced down at her hooves, of course her stupid act also caused stress to the rest of her friends. Rarity noticed the sudden mood change and quickly changed the subject. “Well, let's cut to the chase, I can tell there is something troubling you, dear.”

Twilight glanced around and gulped. It was now or never. Looking at her friend, she smiled. Rarity just smiled back nodded her head for her to speak. Composing herself, Twilight took a moment to think. She could handle this! All she needed to do was ask a bunch of questions that would lead her friend to giving her the answer. Twilight looked at her friend once more and the words just slipped out.

“I really need advice! I think I have a crush on a friend and she’s a mare!”

As the words left her mouth Twilight’s face turned crimson and she brought a hoof to her mouth.

Rarity could only blink as Twilight’s words sank in. The Princess was already folding onto herself. It took all of Rairity’s will power not to giggle as she spoke.

“Well, that was not what I was expecting. None the less you came to the right place Twilight, it would be my pleasure to help you.” Twilight pulled out of her ball but did not remove her hoof, afraid she might speak to much again. Rarity chuckled while shaking her friend, “Twilight, there is nothing wrong with having a crush on one of our friends. They’re all very beautiful mares, especially Applejack.”

Twilight let out an eep that could rival Fluttershy’s as her eyes widened.

“How did you know it was Applejack?!”

Rarity couldn't help herself as she started to laugh, “Oh Twilight, you're too easy. I didn’t know I made a guess, you just answered it for me.” Rarity cringed as Twilight slammed her head on the table. It was hard enough that several of the glasses shook. Rarity smiled, “I think it's sweet you have a crush on her, but let me give some words of caution.”

Twilight lifted her head rubbing the now red spot she caused, giving Rarity a questioning look.

“I don't think this is it, but you may be suffering from damsel in distress syndrome. Let me explain: you were saved by Applejack, which puts her on this shining pedestal. Lots of ponies fall for their heroes, but sometimes the glamour doesn't last.”

Twilight looked down at her hooves, letting her thoughts roll around. It was true, Applejack did save her, but they have all saved each other many times. Wouldn't she have felt these feelings before? Before she could ask Rarity spoke again, “I personally don’t think that’s the case. You do have a golden opportunity, though, to find out. The next month will allow you all the time to assess your true feelings for her.” This caused Twilight to smile she could treat her new feelings like an experiment.

Her demeanor fell, causing Rarity’s brow to raise in question. Thankfully, Twilight went ahead and explained, “Even if my feelings are true, it could ruin our friendship. Who even knows if she likes mares or could even like me in that way?”

Rarity started to laugh, but stopped, noticing the Princess's defeated look. Placing a hoof on top of Twilight’s, she smiled, “I didn’t mean to laugh darling, I just think it's funny you don't think Applejack cares for you.” Twilight’s eyes widened. Once more leaning in, “I’m not promising anything, but there are a bunch of signs pointing in that direction. First, you are the only one she gives a nickname. She doesn't call me Rares, or Pinkie, Pinks. She doesn't even call Rainbow Dash, Dashie, but she calls you ‘Twi.”

It took a moment for Twilight to register her friend’s words. They were true, no matter how much she tried, she couldn't remember Applejack giving anypony else a nickname except members of her own family. Rarity continued her speech, “Second, as much as it pains me to say it, she is the most level headed out of all of us. Yet she did not hesitate to put herself in harm's way and carried you all the way to the hospital. Even though I am right beside your castle and we both know she’s smart enough to realize I could have carried you by magic.”

Rarity smiled, giving Twilight a wink.

“And last but most important, how many times has Applejack called us out when we had done something stupid? It took her only a second to call me out when I treated you all so poorly in Manehattan. How many times has she put Rainbow Dash in her place when her head got too big? I only bring this up because I’m a hundred percent sure she hasn't said one negative thing to you once since you woke.”

Twilight’s ears perked up at the last one. Rarity’s words hit her hard. It was so true, Applejack would always call ponies out on their mistakes, including her own. Rainbow Dash would have had her head torn off if she had done something as dumb as Twilight. Rarity brought up some very valid points, but she still needed information. Rarity sat back with a smile, watching her friend contemplate her words. In all honesty, she had a good feeling the farmer had feelings for the Princess. It was all so perfect, who would have thought Twilight had feelings as well.

Twilight closed her eyes with a sigh. Would it be all that bad to maybe push Applejack to find her answers? If she pushed too hard, Applejack would tell her to stop. A laugh escaped as she pictured Applejack telling her something along the lines of her barn door just doesn’t swing that way. Several scenarios played through her mind and none really ended all that bad, their friendship would still hold strong.

Twilight opened her eyes; her face showed pure confidence.

“Alright, I know what to do,” Twilight said. “You may be right, and it could be a passing phase, so I will use that time to see if there are any signs that Applejack feels the same.” Twilight giggled, clapping her hooves together, “I can treat it like a science experiment, which is just what I need to keep my mind off the no magic thing. Thanks so much, Rarity!”

Rarity barely had time to blink as Twilight rushed out. She smiled, glad she could help her friend, now if she could only help herself with her crush...

Applejack smiled as Twilight’s Castle came into view. To her surprise, most of her chores had been complete, Big Mac thought ahead and got Carmel to come help. She smiled now. She would get to spend more time with Twilight, and she couldn't be happier. For a while now, she had feelings for her friend. At first, she tried to push them off, but soon found herself falling for the beautiful princess. Her smile slightly dropped, there had been several times she thought about being honest with Twilight, she would always stop herself. In all truth, she was fine with Twilight not knowing, she just always had hope.

Once the door came into view, her smile grew. Maybe now she would find the courage to talk to her friend. Twilight and Applejack were always so busy, that she never had time to really look into the Princess’s preferences. Not that she would ever wish her friend to come to harm, but like Granny always said, ‘Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.’

Knocking, Applejack laughed, hearing Twilight scramble around inside.”Come on in Applejack, just mind the mess.”

Shaking her head, she stepped inside, only to stare at the strone out mess. The floor was covered in graphs, charts, scrolls, and quills. Twilight was just trying her hardest to push things into a corner.

Twilight stopped a blush graced her face.

“Sorry about the mess, it was a lot easier to keep things clean when I had magic.” Applejack chuckled, gathering up piles of scrolls to help. They both cleaned in silence until Applejack noticed a strange open journal sitting on the ground. It must have been fairly new, since that only a few pages had been used.

Twilight looked up to see what had the farmer's attention, gasping when she saw Applejack head toward her new journal. In a rush, she dashed forward swiping the book away and hid it behind her back.

Applejack only blinked as Twilight laughed, “This is umm... a special journal. I don't want anypony seeing it.”

Twilight’s breath caught in her chest, hoping Applejack wouldn't question further. Applejack just shook her head before going back to cleaning.

A couple more minutes passed and Applejack noticed something was missing, or someone. “Hey Twilight, uhhh, where's Spike? Ah figured he be helping ya out with this whole mess.” Twilight just blinked the question somewhat throwing her off.

“Oh, he’s staying at Rarity’s tonight,” Twilight explained. “She asked if she could borrow him to help her out with some stuff, so since I had you, I figured there was no harm in it.”

Applejack nodded and went back to her task, as the two finished their clean-up, Twilight couldn't help but sneak glances at her friend, taking in her beauty, she kept finding herself pulled to her friend’s toned physique. Thankfully, Applejack never seemed to notice. Twilight broke the silence.

“I really want to thank you, Applejack. I don't know where I’d be if it wasn't for your bravery.”

Applejack tilted her hat to hide her blush at Twilight’s praise. There was something in her friend's voice that made her smile, “It was nothin’ ‘Twi, Ah would’ve done it in a heartbeat for ya. Yer always helpin’ everypony else, it's only fair we help you out as well.”

Twilight smiled, sprouting her own blush. Soon the mess was cleaned and both mares headed to the kitchen to eat.

Twilight did a check-list in her head as she spoke, “Applejack, would you mind showing me some better ways to cook? You so good at it without magic, I figured you could show me some tricks.” Applejack blushed and nodded; she was more than happy to oblige. Several minutes later, the kitchen had become a mess. Twilight head hung in embarrassment at the site.

Applejack laughed as she sat the table, “Don't sweat it ‘Twi, it takes practice to get used to usin’ yer mouth fur a lot of thangs. Heck, Pinkie Pie, still the only earth pony Ah know how can talk while baking.” Even with her friend’s encouragement, Twilight couldn't help but look at the mess. Several uncooked or burned hay waffles laid on the ground, she had gotten making them easy. When it came time to flip them however was when the mess happened. She had lost track at how many times she failed, Applejack said nothing as she started to eat.

After they finished, Applejack sat back with a smile.

“Well, fur yer first attempt Ah’d say you did better than Applebloom. Ah swear, that girl’s cookin’ almost killed me.”

Twilight let a laugh slip as she finished her own meal, soon both mares cleaned their mess and went to take another shared bath, mostly to get the batter out of their fur. Once they left the bath, Twilight’s nerves grew.

The poor mare was having an inner battle, she had one more test for the night and it was nearing that time. It didn’t help that the longer they were together, she would get lost in Applejack's beauty.
Shaking herself, Twilight spoke “Applejack, I have a fun nighttime activity if you want to give it a try?”

Applejack’s brow raised, but she saw no harm in whatever it was and nodded. It took all of Twilight’s will power not to jump for joy.

Instead she spoke, “Great! I will go get some blankets if you will start a fire for us.”

Applejack did what she was told, not really worried about Twilight’s plans. She was just happy to be spending time with the Princess. She just wish she knew why Twilight was acting a little strange, not that she minded being looked at, but she caught her staring a couple of times. There was also a lot of silence between the two and they never had a problem talking before. She was pulled from her thoughts as Twilight grunted trying to pull way too many blankets with her. Applejack chuckled as she went to help.

Very soon, a nice bed of blankets and pillows sat in front of the fireplace. Twilight smiled as she pulled out a book she knew all too well and spoke, “So when Cadance filly sat me, we would sit in front of a fire and read to each other. It was a great way to pass the time.”

Twilight smiled as she snuggled into the blankets patting the spot beside her for Applejack to join her. Applejack blushed she couldn't believe her luck, taking off her Stetson hat, she laid it next to her friend.

As she got into the blanket she spoke, “Me and Applebloom would do the same thang if she couldn't sleep. Ah think it will be fun.”

Twilight bit her lip as Applejack settle down beside her, it was time for the next phase. Opening the book, Twilight took a moment to slide closer to Applejack intel she could feel the farmer's fur against her own. Twilight smiled when Applejack made no move to put space between them.

Several hours passed as the two mares read to each other. Applejack had found herself enthralled with the story, it had been about a lowly maid falling for a knight. She almost didn’t notice the soft snores against her. She smiled as she looked at her friend, at some point Twilight had draped a wing around her and now had her face buried in her chest. Applejack closed the book, trying her best to not disturb the sleeping Princess. She took a moment and petted Twilight’s mane, glancing at the dying embers of the fire. Applejack let her sleep, taking hold as she pulled Twilight into a deeper embrace, maybe telling the truth wouldn't be as hard as she thought.
