Hm He seems to be quite quick in getting what a Cutie Mark is and Hoops is a bit expositiony but apart from that seems ok.

Well, I assume he asked Flutters at one point why everypony had a marking on their butts and she explained it. As for Hoops, I wanted to show him as a complete jerk so…
Ok, I have to ask... what is with the abundance of physical violence over words? Sure the 'bully' was a jerk, but he didn't hurt anyone yet out 'valiant' hero all out assaults him... and folks think of him a hero? WTF? People don't do that crap! Is the super soldier with an advanced AI in head unable to defeat words without using augmented super strength? This only shows that might makes right, and reality check... that ain't so. Many stories of late have this kind of garbage in it, and I can not abide it. I could have understood his actions if 'Hoops' had struck the fillies, maybe even tried to hit James... but umm 2 wrongs don't make a right... even if 3 lefts do! I know the story mentions 'grabbing', but lets be real here our 'hero' did not even try to defuse the situation. This really needs a much better thought out sequence, otherwise it's nothing more than a felony to correct a misdemeanor.

When I wrote that, I made a lot of mistakes, and ponies reactions to James' heroics may seem like a stretch in places, but... a few points:
1. James is a 'shoot first ask questions later' kind of guy and is very protective of his friends. He also believes (rightfully so) that best respond to a bully is to fight back.
2. The only ones that applauded James' action here were the CMCs, and frankly, that IS realistic as far as the child's psyche goes. Hoops was threatening one of them and went after Fluttershy, James put him in his place. I think that they would be like 'awesome!/that was cool!' etc. But Fluttershy (an adult) was a different story.
All that aside, your comment is kind of scary. Have you ever dealt with a real-life bully? Sadly, words don't work on those guys. The only thing that does is showing them that they're vulnerable. When I was younger I've seen a number of bullies put out that way, they thought they can do anything, there was no reasoning with them. That lasted until someone fought back, their bravado quickly went out thought the airlock, after that.

Personally I agree with meeting a bully with the amount of force necessary to get them to back down now violence might not be the first answer but sometimes it is.

Generally, violence shouldn't be the first thing people jump to, but dealing with bullies is an exception. People with this mindset won't stop until someone puts them in their place, which almost always requires some degree of violence.
Of course, I went a bit too far in the story, but that was to show James's character .
