Well that is the question isn't it.
Shining Armour at least gets addressed in the Solar Steward. In my head at least he was on active duty and thus out of contact.
What happened to Twilight's parents though is a mystery I may or may not end up addressing. Suffice to say they're no longer in the picture at this point.
This is an excellent prequel 1-shot to The Solar Steward.

I've been planning this universe out for a while all the way from pre-Equestria all the way to the Cutie Re-mark.
Most of it isn't written or posted yet, but it you're interested I have a couple more set around the time of Nightmare Moon called The Cost of Harmony and Ready and Waiting to Fall.
Obviously there's no cute baby Twilight or Mane 6, but it does give a good view into the princesses without giving away too much of what's going on in the Solar Steward.
