A very inconsistent author with an affinity for making things sadder than they have to be.

E

Tree Hugger's affinity for all things natural is perhaps her most notorious trait. All beings, be they big or small, flora or fauna, predator or prey, are beautiful in her eyes. She would never bear to see anything in nature mistreated.

So when a distant crisis forces Fluttershy to abandon her animals in a time of need, Tree Hugger teams up with Zecora to solve the mystery behind their strange ailment.

You perfectly capture the calming nature and the wise feel of Treehugger and Zecora. That is the best part of the story, how they seem to act and interact in the way they would.:yay:

7574925 Thank you, that's absolutely what I was going for. I just thought this was an interesting relationship that hasn't been capitalized on much in a lot of other stories :twilightblush:

Well I think it should, because you were right. They would have some interesting conversations about nature and life.

I like the story!

But, give the fact that the tree could be used for curing bad dreams, shouldn't be given to Luna? Just a thought.

Also, we now have a Treehugger tag, so you can add that to the characters.

7991516 Thanks for the heads up, I added her to the characters.

I gave some thought to having Luna take the tree, but I think it was of greater importance to get it out of Equestria. Discord is the only one I know of who has access to an alternate dimension, so I figured that was the safest place. She'd probably be a part of the story if I ever make a sequel to this. I also liked the idea of showing Tree Hugger starting to trust Discord again.

What I love the most about this story is the fact that you added some depth to Tree Hugger. There's so much more to her than the hippie stereotypes, and seeing someone go beyond the "dude, chill" and weed jokes and adding some new dimensions to her characters is immensely refreshing and satisfying to me. And her and Zecora's friendship is so believable and lovely.

It did feel perhaps a bit short, and the mystery elements were a little underplayed, but other than that, everything in the story works incredibly well. Good work!

8166028 I agree, Tree Hugger never really seems to get a decent amount of characterization in a lot of other stories, and she really does deserve it. The length is definitely not what I wanted when I started, but I was sitting on this for so long I figured I'd just get something workable out, and that's also where the downplayed mystery elements came into it. I really didn't put enough proper planning into the story before I started. I do want to revisit the topic later, so hopefully I can improve on that. Thank you for the response. :pinkiehappy:

On my second reading, it struck me that Tree Hugger's hallucination was similar to the Firebird Suite from Fantasia 2000. By chance, have you seen that?

I haven't watched Fantasia in years, but I rewatched the Firebird Suite when I saw this. You're right, it's surprisingly similar. Maybe it had some long term influence on me. :trixieshiftright:

Another thing that I do love about this story is how it feels like an issue of Friends Forever IDW comics: having two characters meet who end up budding a friendship.

Seeing it for Zecora and TreeHugger makes me wish we had a issue of these two characters.
