I_am_Trashman

Hello world. There's not much about me that you need to know, besides the fact that I read a lot more than I write. I'm currently taking requests, however, so check my blog post about it if interested

And had to stop reading here cause i wanted to beat Rainbow for being such a bitch. So because lightning didn't notice Fluttershy crushing on him (maybe because he wasn't interested in a relationship right then?) he's completely in the wrong and the bad guy?

Not necessarily. But, as a guy, I've realized months or years later that some girl I knew was into me and I missed it at the time. When I talk to my female friends about it, they're like "Yeah, she was totally into you, didn't you notice?" As girls, it's easier for them to recognize the signals other girls send and what they mean (the same is true for guys and other guys but that's not relevant here). It really can be exasperating or frustrating for them if one of their friends is trying to get a guy's attention and he just won't get the hint.

Now, on its own Lightning Bolt missing Fluttershy's signals isn't that big a deal. Once she got her cutie mark, Fluttershy was close to confronting him about her feelings for him. But, at the same time, Lightning Bolt left for the zebra lands. That's what Rainbow Dash is truly angry about.

Remember, Rainbow Dash represents the Element of Loyalty. She values her friends very highly, sometimes even putting her dreams on hold for them. She's loyal to a fault. To a pony like that, leaving the country to go overseas for years would almost certainly be seen as a betrayal. The work Lightning Bolt did in the zebra lands is commendable, heroic even. He quite literally saved lives. Is it rational or logical for her to disagree with his decision? Maybe not, but that's just who her character is. She isn't a rational thinker like Twilight, she values loyalty and sticking with your friends no matter what. From her point of view, he abandoned them with barely any warning, leaving her behind to comfort Fluttershy.

Now, this was back when Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy had just gotten their cutie marks. They were younger and more naive back then. Over the years, she's made peace with Lightning's decision, and forgiven him. She still loves him as a sibling, and she is genuinely happy when he returns. Her outburst is just that, an outburst. Humans are emotional creatures, and that extends to ponies as well. Was she too harsh with Lightning? That's up to you, and "yes" is not a wrong answer. Rainbow Dash is not infallible; none of the Mane 6 are. That's the point.

One of the most difficult parts of fanfiction is accurately portraying the personalities and qualities of the canon characters. At the end of the day, you're free to disagree with me about how Rainbow Dash would behave in that situation. We don't really know, because it never actually happened.

Thank you for your comment, and sorry for the wall of text. You made me put more thought into why I wrote Rainbow Dash the way I did, and I felt like I had to write it down. Looking back, maybe the story should have had a Drama tag, I'll probably add it.

Update: Well, It's been a week since I posted this, and I'm impressed at the attention it's gotten. I know 100+ views isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, but honestly I wasn't sure I'd even get 10! It's gotten a few dislikes, but I understand that there can be a stigma against OC characters, especially when they are paired with any of the mane 6. Luckily more people seem to like it than dislike it, which is about as much as I can ask for my first story. More may come in the future, but I'm pretty busy with real-world things for the next few months. I might go back and fully explore Lightning Bolt's time in the zebra lands as a prequel. I ended up making his backstory much deeper than I had first intended, and now I kind of want to expand on it!

Why do people have to dislike this, this is a great strory:heart::fluttershysad::pinkiehappy:

Apparently zony foals are popular over there.

I honestly want to see this hybrid. Also, very interesting chapter. I find it fascinating that Lightning learned the zebra magic.

I loved this chapter! So funny!

Glad you liked it!

I thought it would be cool if zebra magic wasn't exclusive to zebras. Since they don't have horns, their magic is more based around potions and incantations rather than just spells. Whereas unicorn magic comes from inside, zebra magic is external, requiring ingredients with inherent magical properties, activated by speaking the proper words. It's sort of like alchemy: For something to be created, something else must be used up. The more powerful the spell, the more rare or dangerous the ingredients, or the longer/more complex the magic words.

I think that's cool, because it means any race can use zebra magic as long as they have the right ingredients and know the incantations. So creatures like gryphons can use it, despite having no inherent magical ability, because it's not summoned from within like unicorn magic.

I should probably cover this more in another story, I really like the idea.
