Twenty years. It has been twenty years since the Rainbooms graduated from Canterlot High. Their high school careers, finally looking up after befriending their one-time tormenter, Sunset Shimmer, took a dramatic turn for the worse when she disappeared without a trace, only for them to learn months later that Sunset had died in Equestria.

They never got to say goodbye.

Looking back, some days Twilight Sparkle can hardly credit her own memories. Friendship, Magic and the fiery-haired girl who extended a hand to her when she lost herself... Life moved on, memory faded into dreams, and dreams into mere nostalgia, these days, she can't even recall her face - only a pair of lambent wings and a crown of fiery hair.

Until the day when she found a leather-bound journal with the two-faced Sun sigil of Sunset Shimmer buried deep with the rest of her relics from her school days, and in it, a message from herself...

"Please help Sunset."

Set in the middle of an alternate Season 6, after the events described in the Sunset chapters* of The Sun Never Sets, up to about half way through Chapter 40 - Happy Birthday, this can be read stand-alone but the enjoyment is doubled if you read The Sun Never Sets first.

The prologue functions as a bridge linking The Sun Never Sets to False Dawn, and readers unfamiliar with the former may start reading at chapter 1 with little loss to the overall narrative and reduced confusion.

All credit to the redoubtable Mr Fislewait, pre-reader and editor, for making this entire enterprise possible, and for greatly improving the flow, pacing and consistency of the work. Any mistakes, plot holes and typos are, naturally, entirely his fault my own.

*In other words chapters 2,4,6,8,10,11,12,14,16,18,19,20,21,23,25,27,28,29,31,32,33,34,36,37,38 and the first half of 40. Except certain minor variations which will be made clear in the story itself, the chief amongst which is that Sunset's adventure took place after the events of Friendship Games.

I read you're previous story and anxious to see what happens in this one.

Actually the previous story was by me. This one is a spin off of sorts by Granit, who had been discussing the original story with me while it was being published.

7455503

aaaah I aplogize then. But it makes all the more sense, when a spin off/AU version came out of the blue.
I did like the orginal one and udnerstand what happen however i still hate Twilight and the other Princesses for not even cleaning up the dam fale lies printed about Susnet and her child.

It didn't help having to hear she was her own mother's lover jeeze!
Couldn;t they had at least stopped ir or todl the truth, at least sfter she fled thrut he mirror world?
She was gone, there no more excuse to hide the truth about that, that way Quill takes a portion fo the blame for her snapping.
Which is true.

As stated in the story description and in the author's notes for the prologue, this is canonical up to chapter 40 of TSNS, with important changes that will be revealed as the story progresses.

Mr Fislewait and I are, in fact, separate entities. He's the monster who can't help but screw poor Sunny over in the most hilariously unfair way possible whereas I-

Uh.

Moving swiftly on...

Another chapter should be up this weekend. I don't think I'll be able to sustain Mr Fislewait's vigourous update schedule, but 1-2 chapters a week is the current plan.

i loved it thank you for writing this ---Little Jackie:applejackunsure:

You are most welcome! Don't hesistate if you have any questions or comments.

Great story so far!

A question- could you please tell us more about how all the future technology works- the ear-beads and cardphones and the like?

7471490

Credit-card sized phones already exist, but they are, of course, as yet limited in function. Given 20 years of technological development, however, as battery and displays are both massive growth areas, and even now processing isn't a significant constraint, it is foreseeable that some sort of slim, small and multifunctional device roughly the size of a credit card may come into use by 2035. It is likely that they won't share a range of functionality modern mobile phones have, for a lot of hard physical reasons, but given sufficent bandwidth and cloud processing abilities (which again is trending up) it'll be sufficiently useful to be widespread.

For Open Sky, of course, it's just another tool she has in her toolbox.

Her earbeads are also modern technology, just better integrated. It's essentially an audio bug, but unobtrusive enough to be a fashion accessory. It is probably not standalone, but rather connected via personal network with her other devices (the tablet and the card phone and whatever else she has hidden on her person), and allows audio remote control of the other devices, as well as recording functionalities.

I should probably provide more such details in author's notes, but I am loathe to data-dump...

7471689

Well, it seems that the trend nowadays is towards integration with phablets that try to do everything, while in the future, it's once again broken up into separate devices- the phone, the cameras, the tablet, etc. Is there a central device that integrates all of these into one system?

7471909

The trends in both computing and personal devices in general (to borrow a phrase from a friend of BBBFF) swings like a pendulum. In he 70s terminals were everything. In 2000 the local device was king. Now... we have trends heading both ways in no small part due to the power limitations of mobile devices (especially phones) and advent of cheap and fast data.

It is nearly impossible to say which way the pendulum will swing by 2035, or if it'll swimg at all but instead settling into a division of tasks.

As for Open Book's devices, they are for twofold reasons. First, she is a journalist and like to have backups. Secondly, some of the devices are not separate devices but rather part of one whole. Think of the beads as a Bluetooth earpiece or a set of headphones, and for similar reasons, some things such as voice reception or good audio output have strict physical limitations that no amount of technological innovation will solve.

And thank you for your interest!

Well, I haven't read the previous story (and have no intention too. I've binged a lot of long stories lately and I need a break.), but I'm interested in seeing where this goes regardless. I'm mostly interested to see EQ Mane Six face-off against FIM Mane Six, seeing as you said that in the short summary. Soooooooooo, *grabs popcorn* fight, fight, fight.

When is this going to continue? I like it a good lot so far.

Cool start. Hope you continue with it.

Hope this story continues.
