The four elemental crystals have been the source of the world's prosperity for as long as anypony - or anyone else for that matter - can remember. The strong earth, the bright fire, the abundant water, and the brisk wind have been with ponykind since the beginning.
However, for the first time in history the crystals are being threatened. A great evil stirs, willing to destroy the energy of the planet itself in order to achieve its goals. The effects can already be felt worldwide - something is wrong with the wind.
The fate of the world is placed in the hooves of four mares chosen by chance - a princess, a wanderer, an amnesiac, and a pirate. They are about to set out on an adventure that will take them further than any of them could have ever known.

In the prime world they were mostly savages who were nothing more than a pain - and have been mostly hunted to extinction by the kingdoms. Though yes, it is a case of racism.

So far, the plot is nearly identical to the game, even in places where the different cast makes the original events pointless. The Ship Graveyard served Faris's character development, but it doesn't really serve Rainbow-as-Faris. It seems to just be left in because it was in the game.
Some of the character mashups are a big stretch. The Cakes as Magissa and Forza don't seem to have any justification beyond being married. Garble as the wind drake... just because he's a dragon who can fly? And I can't think of a single reason why Spike is Syldra.
So far, the main characters aren't much better. AJ is wandering because it's what Bartz did. Pinkie is older and Fluttershy younger because their roles called for an old man and a little girl. Dash and Rarity lose the aspirations that were so important to them in the show, so Dash can be more like Faris and Rarity can do that upside-down crown joke from the Hearth's Warming play.
It feels like this crossover is just going through the motions instead of making something new out of the mixture.

There are actually a lot of different things I want to do, but they don't actually occur until they reach the City of Ancients and the Second World.
As for the character choices... to each their own I suppose. I happen to really like the idea of Spike as Slydra, though yes I admit I was scrambling to come up with someone for the Wind Drake and for Forza/Magissa. (Though I do admit the Cakes were fun to write.)
As for the main characters - I could honestly see AJ wandering around, Pinkie being the legendary hero, Rarity being the princess, Rainbow being the pirate, Fluttershy being the kid, and Twilight being the scientist (by the way, one of the differences is that Twilight's role is much more important in this story.). It just seemed to me that Rarity's and Rainbow Dash's dreams didn't make much sense in this world - the wonderbolts don't exist and Rainbow Dash is already a major pirate captain, and Rarity's fashion designs (while they do exist) are being overruled by her need to find Luna.
But yeah, you're right - I am sorta going through the motions on many parts of this. Crescent Island probably won't be all that different from what you're used to, nor will the Desert - but the Ancient City? I have PLANS for the Ancient City...

You have nothing to worry about - I love using comedy in my story, and in fact a lot of the content is banter in-between the various heroes. Though do be warned that it takes quite a few chapters for this story to divert from the original in any meaningful way.
However, lots of character death means a dark tag in my book. And by lots of character death, I mean lots of character death. And considering how dark Final Fantasy V gets towards the end, well, even though it's really funny I still think it needs that dark tag.
Could just be me fretting about needlessly it though.

One thing I can offer to you right now is plan a Point of Divergence - where you're going to divert from the original story(s) plot(s) and do with something else. Figure out how you're going to change that- there should be something different you want to do beyond "X with poines." Find what's going to make your story different.
For me, it was fleshing out the world a bit more and... well... the Otherworld you'll find is very different from the one in the game. :3

Thanks! I have tried hard to give Exdeath a bit of a quandary - his worldview has been called into question. He's still an evil crazed lunatic, but character development doesn't always have to be positive.

I made the choice to only pass along one power (Summoning, due to plot significance) and the rest would become tailored to specific heroes and they would slowly get better at them. here's the list without any of the bonus or secret jobs:
AJ: Knight, Berserker, Geomancer, Samurai
RT: White Mage, Time Mage, Mystic Knight, Ranger, Chemist
PP: Blue Mage, Monk, Summoner, Ninja, Bard, Dancer
RD: Black Mage, Thief, Red Mage, Beastmaster, Dragoon
What is not counted here is Cannoneer, Gladiator, Oracle, Mime, and Necromancer. I won't say any more about what's going to happen. ;P
Though yeah, AJ does have Geomancer, I guess she just doesn't use it much. Same with RT and Ranger. (or chemist for that matter. but that may be because I never figured out how to USE chemist in-game very well.)
