The idea behind "Dream Valley Union High" (also mentioned briefly in pt. 1) was a) Ponyville is one of several small communities in the Dream Valley region, and b) none of these towns are large enough to support their own school so, c) all the kids from smaller town, including Ponyville, commute to the centrally-located Dream Valley Union High.

FWIW, my intention was that Pinkie is truly being honest about her ex, possibly for the first time in her life, while Tricky is an abusive [plot]hole who would say anything to put himself in the right. Thus, you can probably trust what Pinkie says, but not Tricky.
But "the author is dead," after all, in multiple (figurative) senses. Go with whatever interpretation is most compelling to you!
