If a Slenderman falls in the forest, does anyone care?

E

Season 6 Spoilers.

Fluttershy's parents. The mysterious ponies who raised one of the legendary Elements of Harmony, no doubt as fantastically intriguing and full of character as the pony herself, right?

...Yeah, not so much. As for Fluttershy's brother...

How about no? Starlight Glimmer is full of no.

Was there a POINT to this story?

No, just guttering hatred.

7275258 Pretty much a review of the episode in story form? Frankly when Fluttershy deadpans at you when you talk about being falsely assertive you know something is wrong.

This was interesting story to say the least

Lazy, yes. Rude, definitely. Stupid, not as likely, he pulled Tom Sawyer on Spike that got him painting the fence and didn't have to do a single thing personally to get the job done successfully.

By definition Zephyr is a defeatist which is a real psychological issue that was likely caused by coddling early on in childhood, with parents like the ones Fluttershy has, this is not exactly an unbelievable end result. His personality makes sense.

Fluttershy however didn't have this happen to her because she became friends with Rainbow who was a constant positive influence. Fluttershy herself has tones of being a defeatist and has overcome it multiple times throughout the show.

7275323
Exactly. Fluttershy has overcome it multiple times because she has friends who try to help her, who believe in her even if she doesn't believe in herself.

Zephyr has nopony believing in him. He has to break down in a forest before his big sister's willing to offer some real encouragement. It doesn't help that his coping mechanism is obnoxious boasting, but if you're not a cute mare like Trixie, this fandom will hate you forever.

In that sense, I guess this story could represent a fandom's possible sense of entitlement.

Erisn #7 · Jun 4th, 2016 · · 3 ·

Or, alternatively, my disgust in said uselessness. It's one thing to feel like you're a constant failure, but it's another to complain about it without being proactive.

Yes, Fluttershy had a lot of help, but she was usually called upon to rise to a challenge. Often, it was a hard challenge. Her first adventure was going off to fight Nightmare Moon, not getting a job. Being a defeatist is fine, but if you always defeat yourself no amount of help is going to save you. I personally found Zephyr's sudden transformation unrealistic, to be honest.

And as for getting help, sometimes you don't get any. What I disliked most about this episode was the entitlement Zephyr seemed to have to be helped. It's not a binary choice where he either breaks down and dies or gets help and succeeds. He needs to get over his problems without using other people as a crutch. He does not do that, which is why I dislike him. It doesn't mean it's fair to him, but he's also annoying and that doesn't help. And Trixie's just as annoying too at times, but at least could survive on her own.

Er...um...okay...

This was less of a story, and more of a rant... but okay. Have a

“They’re doormats for anypony to walk over, that’s what they are.” Starlight said irritably. “How they ever managed to get through life…”

... said the pony who got through life stealing other ponies' cutie marks and messing up the timeline because her friend left her (I like Starlight, I'd just like to point out that she's probably not the best character to be put in such a role in this... story-like thing).

Can we not? It's one thing to complain about an episode on forum threads and blog posts, but must we pollute the story namespace with thinly veiled grousing? I read stories on this site to see even more of the ponies I enjoy, not to be lectured about why the new ponies are allegedly terrible by a poorly characterized Starlight Glimmer.

I want to say......THANK YOU I couldn't come up with words when I saw that episode. I'm with Starlight on this. That's most ponies reaction to this episode. You said all my words for me.:pinkiegasp::pinkiehappy::rainbowlaugh:

Well, that's pretty fun, watching a rant run off like that. I can practically feel the AngryJoe in this show...

Kinda like the dynamic with the rant, though, with Twilight being the straight mare of the pair. And considering how..."triggered" Glim Glam could be, I think this was a believable conversation. Except maybe for the ending bit.

While I do not agree with your opinions of the characters, I did find this story amusing, so well done

7275528

I just think it's too bad. It's not the author's fault of course—I just think it's sad.

I find it just a tad amusing that people will lose their shit over a worthless male character, yet those male characters only receive maybe 20% of the fanfics on this site.

i really hate it when people write stories for the purpose of using a character as a mouthpiece on why they don't like an episode or a character.

"Ooh, nasty. But I admire your restraint.”
“—And then I made him eat it.”
“Starlight!”
“What?”
“Good job. You’re definitely my best student.”

This was all hilarious, but Twi saying that. Precious!:rainbowlaugh:

7275274 that is just not right. if you hate an episode keep in the blogs don't bring it in fanfics

I wasn't sure if this is an accusation fic first. I thought it's just a serious story about Starlight Glimmer's thoughts of Fluttershy's brother upon having met him, but by the comments, in which the author doesn't even deny that's the case, I'm sad to see that it is. Guess this won't get a place in my Season 6 bookshelf then, even though it is a Season 6 fic.
Dear author, if you want to rant about an episode somewhere than do it in your blog, but don't abuse fanfics as hate instruments and characters as mouthpieces, an abuse of art like that must not be.

7275528

Have an upvote for this. I just found out recently what accusation fics are and was all the more terrified that this is a thing for years already. But lately, it seems to get worse. This is already the second fic like this that I see this season, first "Newbie Dash" got that treatment, now "Flutter Brutter" does.
And I'm saying this the second time already, if this is becoming a trend now, to write hate/accusation fics for episodes one doesn't like there should be a rule made to prevent those from being written.
Fics are there to build on the show they are written for and to enhance it, not to slanders its episodes.

I wasn't going to bother commenting again, mainly because I feel like everyone gets their own comment and opinion. People can like Zephyr or hate him, and judging by the likes/dislikes it's nearly split on how people like the story based on that. I personally can't accept the moral of the episode and wrote this story in reaction both to point out the flaws and be entertaining to some people. Of all the characters, Starlight probably is the best for this as with so many of my stories just because she is a moral crusader who doesn't have the same safety valve on her feelings and mouth other characters from the show do.

But if you hate her characterization, the way Zephyr's good name is attacked, or my opinion on why I don't like him, fine. That's great, actually. It means you have your own opinion. Leave a dislike on this fic. Leave a dislike on this comment. Leave a comment saying how stupid this comment was.

But when people say 'don't write hate-filled reaction fics because that's so wrong to do to fanfiction?' That's when I get annoyed. The entire purpose of fanfiction is to put your opinion out there. Every character written on this site is an author's interpretation of how a pony should be, might be, or could be. If you hate Starlight's characterization here, please don't read Hard Reset, or This Platinum Crown, or Vinyl and Octavia: University Days. They all have characters that deviate from their personalities in the show in small or big ways.

All of my fictions written after an episode could be classified as rants or accusations. Dragons Speak, one of my top-liked fics? That's a rant on the episode's weirdness. As Smart as an Earth Pony? Ditto, and I go after the idea that all Earth Ponies are idiots and how stupid Applejack acted in the show. I'd Always Thought They'd Be Cooler is made of my dislike of the Crusaders not using their Cutie Marks in an interesting way. That people hate this story and Princess of Friendlessness seems to be a reaction to when I get too overt in my message, or criticize things in a way that's too harsh.

If it were just me talking to the reader in a single narrative voice about how stupid this entire episode was an how Zephyr is a nazi-pony, that would probably not be fiction and be a rant instead. But this is a story, with two characters who interact with each other with distinct personalities -- however misinterpreted they may be -- and so it's a story, and thus part of fanfiction.

I criticize and put my opinions out with every sentence I write. That's not gonna stop, but hopefully the way I deliver my stories does. Could this story have been written funnier, and gotten more likes? Yes, but I didn't feel like writing in that way. This story was Starlight reacting in comedic way to Fluttershy's family. It's a fanfic, and if it doesn't gel with everyone's opinions so completely that it turns into happy vanilla mush, that's a good thing. But it's also not going anywhere because it belongs right here.

7278773

The entire purpose of fanfiction is to put your opinion out there.

Wrong. Maybe that's why you write, but it sure as hell isn't why most people do. Further, if fixfics are your idea of a good time, then fine—write them and post them. Ain't nobody gonna stop you. However, be ready for people to point out their dislike for those stories. Personally, I think writing a knee-jerk reaction to an episode you didn't like is a waste of time. It looks more like whining than anything else and exhibits what I believe to be a distinct lack of creativity. Why not apply your mind to creating entirely new stories that address entirely new conflicts instead of writing a blog-post in story form to point out how you think an episode should have gone?

7279295
Fair points, and thank you for following my request to leave dislike and a comment. That's your prerogative and everyone else's -- as I wrote, I don't really care about people hating my work. I was making the point that saying a fanfic shouldn't exist because you don't like the content of it is wrong. You and others are free to hate it as much as you want, however. And I look forward to you attacking other blog posts reacting to the latest episode in the same vein. After all, a story is just another way of expressing an idea. Surely blog posts are then equally wrong?

But when you claim people don't write because they want to share their opinions, that's where I disagree. Every stupid story about Twilight meeting her amazing anon OC, is someone putting their opinion out there. Each story we write is our opinion of how to make a sad story, an amazing story, how to reveal Applejack's character best or if Twilight and Rarity really are the best pairing...

Writing is opinion. It may be art and beauty in some cases, and it may have standards among certain circles and people. But the heart of every story is a writer's opinion on how the world should be, and the only difference is the level of abstraction we put into our stories from telling someone like it is to writing a long story as a analogy to life.

As to your point about this story being a waste of time and lacking creativity -- well, at least it's gotten a lot of people talking. And frankly, it's my choice to write whatever I want. Your opinions are noted and listened to, but that's it. And if you did check out my other stories, you'd see that in between my fun writing reaction fics to varying degrees of success, I write far longer stories as well. For instance, yesterday I posted a chapter twice as long as this fic. Today I finished another 9,000 word chapter. I'm off to write another thousand words tonight. Commenting on this story and writing within the confines of an episode is what I do for fun.

7279457

I didn't leave a dislike on a damned thing, so I'll thank you not to assume that I did.

And when I write a story, it's not my opinion of "how to make a [whatever] story"; it's just me writing something. You can say that's an opinion, but then you're just arguing semantics so that you can contort the evidence into line with your point. Let's not go there.

Edit: And let me add just another thing—you might have written five million words on the most serious and venerated of topics, but that has nothing to do with this fic here. Like I said, you're allowed to write whatever the hell you want, but when people don't enjoy it, don't expect them to tell you how lovely it is just because you also happened to write Ulysses. Actually, that's a bad example—Ulysses was crap.

Whatever.

Edit Edit: Oh my god, why is her name Pirate? Is that satire? Please tell me that's satire, because I cannot believe that any sort of reasonably serious person would name their character Pirate.

Please.

I'll wait for the sequel (prequel?) to this fic, where you woke up in the body of Glimmer that day, and proceeded to act just as she would under the trying circumstances.
