This has absolutely nothing to deal with Harry Potter :x the "Defense Against the Dark Arts and Entities" is something on its own, and a very common course within any form of Magical Academies. It was just brought out more in Harry Potter, hence why people always ASSUME any mentioning of this is an instant flag of "Oh, Harry Potter Story!" The missing teacher portion? Well, that is an obvious answer. Equestria is a magical land, filled with powerful magic users yes. However, they are also a peaceful kingdom, barely a reputable military (headcannon, as I found out, they don't do much and are very laxed... Hurts my military side sooooooooo bad). So, they wouldn't have the first clue how to defend themselves against the dark arts and entites, the incidents with Nightmare Moon, Sombra, Discord, and Tirek; being my case resource for this... Each one being either a dark art user or some dark entity. So, Twilight would not be able to find a qualified instructor for this sort, seeing how no "pony" in Equestria truly knew how to fight such a thing, Celestia and Luna only able to seal such magic and entities rather than being able to defeat them. They usually have to rely on ancient artifacts that they don't exactly understand fully...
And that is where our boys in armor come in, beings who have combatted these entities and magic for a very long time. The Academy idea? Well, I mentioned where I got THAT in the Author's Note xD it spawned quite the idea.
