I always felt there should be a thing where the magic leaking from the portal to Equestria would cause all sorts of magical shit to pop up, leaving the Mane 7 to take care of them, Buffy and the Scoobies style.

Since Dawn was being sent into an unknown situation, shouldn't a slayer have been sent in to the area as backup? I'd think Dawn would want to have some way of quickly calling in some help if she suddenly ended up in danger there.
Does Dawn have any magical training? If she eventually tells them the truth about the Council and the supernatural world, being able to do a few simple magic spells might help her credibility.

Dawn is what one might consider an honorary Slayer. She's been in the biz long enough to know how to not die. She's also within easy driving distance of the base where Xander and Faith are stationed, which I've left the exact location of vague so far, so she can call for backup and get it in a few hours at most if she really needs it.
Dawn casts a few spells in Season 7 when Willow is still recovering from her magic rehab. She probably knows enough to show a basic spell, like a locator spell.
