Play From The Heart

An enchanting, mesmerizing blanket of snow rained down heavily from the clouds onto Canterlot City, making a certain dragon bury himself even deeper in the mountains of clothing adorned on him and expel a large cloud of frost into the air.

He really, really hated the cold. Dragons by nature couldn't stand it, and something he remembered his mom telling him was that it may have been because his kind had upset the Windigos centuries ago, or perhaps because they naturally radiated heat and the enemy of heat was the cold. How ironic that the soon-to-be ruler of Equestria could be taken down perhaps even permanently by a single season.

He really should have taken up his mother’s offer to be given a carriage to visit his second family, the Sparkles, instead of opting to walk; What in the name of Aunt Luna’s stars was he thinking?!

Maybe he really was getting stubborn after hanging around Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo for so many years, or maybe he didn’t want to send two guards out in the freezing cold to walk a few blocks while he was nice and comfy inside the vehicle, not that they would have minded.
Whatever the case, he was really starting to regret it.

Due to the enormous wool hat obscuring his vision, he didn’t even notice that he had ran smack dab into a building and groaned loudly in annoyance from being halted in his tracks more than being in physical pain.

He noticed the building, and like all of Canterlot, it was beautifully designed and no doubt held important ponies inside, whether because it was of the cold or because it was a famous music establishment didn’t matter, but if he had to guess, it may have been the former.

Slowly he moved closer to the entrance and pulling open the doors, surprised to see it wasn't closed, entered inside intent on warming up for a time before he continued on his long, perilous journey to his second family’s home...all three blocks of it.

As he walked farther into the building, he couldn't help but notice a beautiful melody being played slowly all the way down the hall and picked up his pace to understand where the sound resonded from, eager to know just who could be playing such incredible music.

When he opened the double doors, not even realizing just how large this place was, he noticed a lone gray colored mare on stage, eyes closed in concentration as she effortlessly ran the bow held in her hooves very slowly down, playing a note that made her give a small frown, as if not satisfied that she performed that note.

But even still, she held the large instrument, a cello he remembered his mother telling him, tight in her hooves and continued to play. The sight was so dazzling and unique that he had to hear more and found a seat closer to the mare before him, who was unaware she had an audience.

For ten minutes, Spike watched with wonder and amazement as she carefully played to her heart’s content before she finally relaxed, took a large breath, and opened her eyes, only to shriek in surprise as to see Spike in front of her who had his breath taken away by her amethyst colored eyes, so captivating to the drake he didn’t keep his eyes off of them until an extra bow struck him between the eyes.

“Damn it, that hurt!” He howled, a few licks of green flames spewing from his maw and he held his injured head and turned his attention to the attacker before him who looked genuinely surprised that he was not tearing her in half.

“Y...you talk? That is rather interesting. Forgive me, I did not realize dragons were capable of speech and to be honest, you are the first one I have seen, so by instinct alone-”

“You’re fine, I'm sorry for startling you, I was...just...trying to get away from the cold. Spike the dragon.” He introduced himself as he stood and walked closer to the stage, holding out a large claw to the mare who looked at the appendage as though she had never seen such a thing, which was true, but she quickly composed herself and returned the greeting.

“Octavia Melody, at your service. Wait...did you say cold? As in the weather?: She questioned making the reptile nod grimly.

“I’m afraid it’s snowing pretty bad out there, which was the whole reason I came here.” He half lied, as he would have been fine with any building to warm him up for a bit, which was rather redundant since he was a dragon and all, but he was impressed by her skill and beauty so he chose to stay.

“Um...how long have you been here?” He asked slowly as she ran a hoof through her mane, obviously frustrated with herself from losing track of time.

“I’ve been here nearly all day, I wasn't even aware that we were having a snow day, musicians don’t like being disturbed in practice. I wish I had taken the time to at least gather a coat, and no, that was not a pun to the one currently covering my body.” She spoke to herself, but still looked to the drake who couldn't help but let out an immature snicker at the unintended joke.

Clearing his throat and trying to appear more suave for the mare before, him he looked at her rather seriously before rubbing his spines with a tint of red covering his scales.

“I...I know it’s not exactly appropriate, and we barely know each other, but since you have no current clothing to brace against the cold and I’m well...a dragon. Maybe I can...walk you home?” He asked, though it was a bold request for his part, it was obvious that he was not used to much interaction physically with the opposite sex, and she felt a bit bad for making him feel so embarrassed.

In truth it was a sound idea, but she felt compelled to offer something in exchange for his help, but when she relayed her reward, he declined with a shake of his head and a warm, gentle smile on his face.

“My mom taught me manners on helping a lady in need. You don’t owe me anything, Miss Melody.” He laughed with a blush.

“Please, call me Octavia. Very well then, if you’re absolutely sure, then allow me to gather my things, as we’re not far from my apartment, I promise. Thank you, Spike.” She answered in kind as he laughed and helped her to gather her things.

As the two slowly walked towards the dreading blizzed, they spoke of what interested them, finding out that they both had a thing for classical music and ice cream, as well as ancient museums and antiques.

As the traveled through the snow, Octavia spoke with great excitement and passion about an up and coming music concert she was going to perform in, which was the whole reason for her extra practice, as well as her job at a local flower store not giving her as much hours as she needed, making Spike take a mental note in giving a word to his mother about that.

She apologized that it was more then likely he would not be able to to attend as the concert was held for only the highest of pony elite, as he had to feigned disappointment, wanting nothing more than to scoff but held his tongue.

Faster than either of them could have noticed, apparently they had arrived at her apartment, making the earth pony sigh loudly as a large cloud of fog flowed from the breath.

“It seems we are here; are you sure you don’t wish to come in for a cup of tea, Spike?” She asked softly, taking the cello case from him onto her back as he could only smile and shake his head, but knew that such an action was not a valid answer.

“No, maybe another time. I’m just glad to assist you, though next time I would suggest a winter coat.” They both laughed as she turned around to walk up the steps before something made her stop as she slowly turned around, trotted up to him, and standing as high as her hooves would allow, kissed his left cheek making the drake blush.

“I may not owe you anything, Mr. Dragon but that does not mean I can’t show my gratitude, perhaps we can get to know each other another time; How does Saturday at four in the music stage work for you?” She asked softly as he could do nothing more than smile.

“Perfect.” He answered, making her smile. With that answer satisfying her, Octavia turned around and went inside the building to relax for the night.

He was freezing from the top of his spines to the tip of his tail physically, but by the gods, he would be damned if his heart wasn't a roaring fire inside, as today was an incredible day for him, even if he was going to severely regret it in the morning.

Author's Note:

Technically I suppose this would be an Alternate Universe, but if so I never intended for such, though if you didn't notice Spike is aged up in this chapter. I know he's been around her a time or two but I doubt they really know each other. Dedicated to FamousLastWords I hope you liked it.
