Leading them is the Dragon King, the greatest of their kind, a monster among monsters. He is a creature of fury, a hurricane given form, a blight upon life as we know it.

This time, he will have his vengeance upon the alicorn princess who betrayed him. This time...he will not hesitate.

To be honest, I originally thought the Princess was Twilight, not Celestia, and that Spike was avenging Rarity's death. That last paragraph proved me wrong.

6746373 Deception was the point. Though I guess it didn't fool Rammy. Yes, I wanted to leave the big reveal for the end. This story takes place centuries into the future so Spike's a big dragon now. Not much of a backstory to it. Twilight, blindly loyal to Princess Celestia, was sacrificed to save the nation. Celestia, of course, lives on as the nation's eternal ruler. Spike saw this as a betrayal and thus prepared for the day when he would destroy her. I fancy the idea of Spike becoming all-powerful in the future. He's so poorly developed in the show, having little to no abilities other than to serve as messenger boy, er, dragon.
But he'll grow up one day.

While I knew the dragon was spike I was not sure on the whether it was twilight or rarity. i honestly leaned towards rarity though the always faithful... should have been a clue but then always faithful could apply to both ponies... so you still got me there...(I had originally thought the princess was Twilight not Celestia...) having said that this was a very well written twist... and story. It's a shame it doesn't have more hits
