This story is a sequel to Fallout: Equestria - Duck and Cover!

NOTE: Duck and Cover is not required reading for this story.

Atom Smasher is a special kind of pony. She lies, she cheats, she steals, she stockpiles explosives and relishes their liberal application, and she's one of the good guys. She earned the praise of the locals after becoming the accidental hero of the wastes around her home, but once the day is saved, being the hero is boring. She needs a new adventure.

One day, a letter arrives, inviting her to join her brother in San Palomino on a search for their missing dad.

She doesn't remember having a brother.

It is, however, just what the doctor ordered. Now, if only this desert wasn't so damn hot...

A more serious look at Atom Smasher from Duck and Cover. Also being written at a less breakneck pace. Original by Kkat, cover art by me! Editing by IsiahJacobs.

Welcome back! Kept us waiting, huh?

Well well, I will have to read this!

I haven't been able to keep up with all the awesome Fo:E fics cropping up nowadays, but when I saw this little miracle on my Tumblr Dash I knew I had to read it immediately.

Seriously, dude. Duck And Cover was my all-time favourite piece of fanfiction last year when I read it, and it's a title it still holds to this day, even topping Kkat's story it's based on. Maybe it's by British bias, but I laughed so hard at that thing.

This is an awesome surprise for me, and I can't wait to see where you go from here. Because this one's just as good as I remember, if a little more coherent. The question is, can you top your past self's writing?

I'd say yes, based on what I've just read.

Huh, this must be one of the DLC's you listed in the last story.
What was it again... Train Simulator 2299?

Good to see you back.

6677352 The DLCs are probably not going to be done unless I get like, really drunk on my birthday or christmas or something, because they're just a little bit dumb. Might be fun for a flash prompt though.

*looks at the title* ohmygoshYES!

Your book has been advertised on the new facebook group page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/foebooks/ :)

A sequel? Huh. Colour me intrigued.

"Make Love Not War" and no romance tag though? Am disappoint! :rainbowwild:

Very interested to see where this leads. It says it's going to be a more serious look at Atom but previously she was anything but. It seems you've abandoned everything from the previous story (for better or for worse) but so far I think you're handling her pretty well in this current direction. She is still nonsensical, stubborn, short attention spanned, ready to kill at the slightest provocation, bordering on insane pony. I expect alot of that to be cut back on or for her to learn and have to change her ways. Either way, I am excited.

Atom's names for the Steel Rangers will never get old. I think I got one... S'more Roasters.

oh my god is this fucking Atom Smasher? u crazy bitch! I love you, dont you ever change!

Cant wait for the next chapter :)

I'm all in, just need to sleep and do other things before reading, but hell am I all in.

Justly so. That's the only way to write an FOE fic, both to ensure it lives up to the high quality FOE fans expect and love, and to ensure you don't kill yourself during with the what-the-fuck-am-i-doing-with-my-life bullet.

Hey, Atom aquired a ghetto pipbuck and the world didn't explode! Who'da thunk it?

Another good chapter. My favourite part was when Atom's up in the middle of the night freaking out because she doesn't want to mess with any of her bro's stuff. You're taking the character and story in a more mature direction without sacrificing humour (dis-in-hibition, ha), and it doesn't feel forced at all. So, hey - good job!

Unlike in the last story, nobody takes any of Atom Smasher's usual antics. Except her brother, what a chill dude... or a total pushover. And plus, our protagonist must contend with empathy! The horror!

After Duck and Cover showed what happens when a player character gains almost completely free reign to turn the wasteland into her toy box, it makes sense to challenge that character in the sequel by... not letting her do what she wants. The barriers and metaphorical invisible walls fit perfectly with the personality, and even within the confines, Atom still keeps the reader entertained.

A rather brilliant execution.

I really wanted Atom to just try and Jack ''Little boy'' and take him out for a joy ride, unfortunately they have no fuel like, but i'm sure she would have done that anyway, Also who else was listening to black Sabbath while reading this?

a fantastic chapter, And I love how Atom is slowly maturing. Her new found empathy makes me feel that her brothers abandonment had mentally card her, and all of her ADHD antics from before were a coping mechanism. Now that she has her brother back, the wall she built up around herself is crumbling down. It's still the same Atom we have come to know and love, but not.

Keep up the good work.

I forgot how much I loved Atom.

"Possible," one of the most lovable sociopaths in the wasteland. Hmmm gonna make use of those perks you made? Like the companion one, or the free bus pass?

If the wasteland had more ponies like Winchester in it, I don't think Atom would be as much of a problem as she is. Winchester knows how to tame her. I don't think I've ever seen Atom quite put down like this.

Also, Hoers, when are you going to post that pic of Satellite Sam? The space cat, not Satellite F. Sam.

Well, this part of the Wasteland looks like home for real colorful NPCs... I mean, characters. Never mind Winchester, Sattelite Sam just ditched her like it's nothing, she even paid shitton for bottle of water. Atom's gonna have fun time here.

god damm it will be my life misson to see that scrapy peica shit turn to a real grade a pipbuck and this gonna sound strange has atom got laid yet evry foe protegenst does at some point dont leave her outta the fun

You did it again... I'm usually not a fan of brash, rude protagonists, but I just can't not like Atom Smasher....

I can't wait to see what trouble she gets into this time!

Great as ever!

*inner David Bowie fanboy screaming*

Okay, I really like Satellite Sam (the robot, not the cat.)

You may consider me the lead SatelAtom shipper! Because I always go for the unconvential ones, heh.

OMG I LOVE YOUUUU!!!! I was so sad that Duck and Cover was so short. THIS IS THE BEST POSSIBLE THING! ^^ *squee*

Awesome chapter. Can't wait for more :)

I've gotta say, I like this hippie character Atom has come across. She comes across as a sexier Tree Hugger.

I bet she wears a robe to hide some sick dreds.

So if beer is mostly water, somewhere between 90 - 95% by volume, then why is it sold cheap?
In fact it was historic that beer cost more than water, but few drank water since it had parasites.
Which would still fit here as without principal sanitation or the ability to effectively distribute water, you would want to keep to single serving size container water provisions.
Well so long as the alcohol doesn't dehydrate you.

But this brings up an even more important question.
What shape did Atom leave those 9 beer bottles in when she left?
Castle?
Ring?
Stonehenge?

In that talk with Cal, Atom Smasher... was... actually civil. Really friendly.
What!?

Strange as casual talk Atom Smasher is, she has not lost her hilarious style of narration. And once she has nine beers in her system, it is just glorious! It seems almost impossible that such a wild, sociopathic character could still have moments of genuine sympathy and drama. Yet those moments seem so effortless in this chapter, especially during the interactions with nomad pony.

She needs to lay off the Chinese food.

Great chapter, does anyone know If these are gonna be fairly regular or just released when they are finished?

It took all my will to not scream for Atom to run back and find the patrol members guns, but other than that, good chapter.

7237668 They're just turning up as they're finished, but I'm trying to keep it fairly regular now that term has finished. I'd like to have the story done by the end of the summer.

This story makes me laugh every time I read a new chapter.

I love how its a Fallout Equestria story, but its not at the same time... After reading a few(and writing my own) particularly dark FoE fics) this is a welcome diversion!

Keep it up!

Some time later I started getting that existentially uncomfortable feeling you get when you're sleeping for a long ass time

This paragraph is beautiful, not only because the feeling described is a relatable truth tucked away between the unsatisfactory seams of our routine lives, but also because the narrative voice does everything necessary to capitalize on the point our protagonist is making, especially by making the whole passage feel longer than it is supposed to.

They'd left what looked like an initiate's jumpsuit hanging on the door, presumably to aid in my navigating the base without arousing suspicion, that I soundly disregarded.

Utterly perfect in-character moment.

"What are you, part fish? Slow down!"

"You leave my heritage out of this!"

Heh. Barely any straight-man characters in this new setting. I love the personalities, certainly, but a part of me does miss Stars and House. As straight as talking ponies came.

While she did admitted that she deserved it, she nonetheless told me to go hang out with Babylon or something.

You have done us a great injustice by not showing us that scene!

When my heart stopped racing, I opened my eyes, rolled back, and the ceiling was as it was when I found it.

Probably the most low-key drugged out (or just plain drunk) sequence I have ever read. Still as effective.

Crumble was standing with a giant pile of scrap and smiling at me. The scrap started emitting smoke.

Oh hang on, my mistake. Steam started spewing from Prickly Pear’s ears.

That was rich!

It still amazes me, that nothing went wrong in this chapter and no violence occurred. Just a full day on a Steel Ranger base. Yet the chapter was endless entertainment, thanks to a combination of witty writing, great personality, and the resourcefulness of Atom Smasher for making a mundane situation fun.

Liking this chapter, and the hippie horse's return.
