It's never been easy for Daniel Winters, particularly at home. But two things keep him going: his love for basketball and his father- the light in even the darkest of his days.
Basketball has always been an escape for Daniel. He lives in gray, broken Aurora, a city ruled by the gangs, drugs and violence. He’s always dreamed of getting out somehow with his mother and father. But until then, when he puts on his number 9, everything seems to make sense.
But as the year progresses, Daniel finds himself on his own in a new town and a new school. After losing his best friend and parents, he is hesitant to make new friends.
But he finds a few girls that help him change his life.

Interesting. You've spent much more time describing the background than the main character, which is okay if he's an Everyman product of his environment, but some broad strokes of characterisation are necessary. I've picked up that our boy is dedicated and can sometimes act rashly, but only through careful reading, and a little more might be needed. I still care what happens to him because of his situation though. The backgrounds is all very good, though you've repeated a paragraph about the end of the world twice. Definitely watching this.
