Well isn't this a strange coincidence? Just recently today an idea popped into my head for a nearly identical story, with Vinyl and Octavia in school together. Except in mine Octavia was the mute new kid and she was gonna use sign language instead of writing on paper (Though writing may be a better idea.) I have other stories I'm working on right now so I'm not gonna be writing it anytime soon. But still, what are the odds I'd find a story so similar to what I was thinking about? I'm gonna keep track of this story cause I'm really curious where it's gonna go. and I'm gonna give you a like because I like what you have so far.

Thanks! This was like a perfect storm of inspiration. From the music, to the search for an image related to it and the ongoing saga of Things Tavi Says (and the introduction of Blank Speak into my headcanon), this story basically fleshed itself out in one night. Now to transfer it all to paper and add in the details.

As much as I would love to say "Oh, yeah. That's all been considered," it really hasn't. You've given me quite a bit of material that is missing and will be cleared up in the next chapter. So, there will conflict resolution between Lyra and Octavia. And I've got a good idea of the snooty friends issue. Thanks for pointing these out!

Thanks for the feedback! As to why it's in present tense, I honestly have a hard time sticking to one tense. The initial draft was in past and present. My editor asked which one I wanted to go with and decided to go with present tense. I feel it could work just as well in past tense.
There is one minor grammar mistake here:
"Know" should probably be "known".

But the ending feels kind of missing something. Are we supposed to overlook that Vinyl is jobless, left the school and is about to lose her flat?
Will these things stay unresolved?

In all honesty though, I did leave it open for the possibility of a sequel, as a couple of people have asked me for one. But to be fair, I'm not really feeling it. So one of two things is bound to happen. First, I write a sequel in the future. Not sure when, but it is a distinct possibility. Second, the entire thing gets a re-write in the future. Now, that is going to happen to try and smooth some things out (like my use of punctuation), but I might add more in to clear it up and/or write an additional chapter.
But for your curiosity, I was planning on addressing those concerns. First, the job. I was planning on having the connections of Octavia's Father be used to secure Vinyl a job and have her work her way back to the top of the heap. In addition to that, she would be starting to produce albums and work with other artists on their albums. Second, schooling. I did mention that she dropped out and went back to the Canterlot High, the city's free high school. While not as fancy as Canterlot Prep (or future focused, ie. music specific classes), it offers a good solid education. Third, housing. Ultimately there was going to be a scene in which Vinyl packs up her turntables and records and heads off to Ponyville. I decided against that as this story needed both characters and I new as soon as I sent her off, she would drop out of the picture.
But sadly, the well of inspiration has dried up and I was getting tired of working on this story. I felt myself stagnating as I tried to force things along. Hopefully, by working on other stories, I'll get those creative juices flowing again and be able to bring some experience in writing back to this story and give it the polish and shine it deserves.

I appreciate the follow and I'm glad I was able to answer your questions :). I love it when readers ask me these as it sometimes forces me to look at the story in another light. Sometimes that's great and other times, it just leads to a confused me!
As it stands, I'm 99% certain that a rewrite and an sequel will be occurring. I don't know when however. The rewrite will be to try and just smooth things out and that's going to come with experience. The sequel... I'm working on ideas, but I don't want to rush it and end up being miserable because I feel like I have to produce something. I want it to be fun.
The good news with those, is that I'll be announcing things through blog posts!

I am confused as to why Octavia now seems stunned that vinyl is PON-3, even in private (so no reason to fake it) given she was the one who blew the whistle in the first place?
If she didn't know Vinyl and PON-3 were the same pony, how did she know Vinyl worked at the club? Vi only told Lyra and Bon-Bon that I recall reading...

It's been a while since I wrote this, but if I remember correctly, Octavia grabbed the letter saying Vinyl had been emancipated. In this case, her place of employ was listed on there (don't remember if I noted that or not). Tavi sees where Vinyl works, but not the capacity in which she works. Since her father owns the club, she pull some strings, gets Vinyl fired without realizing what she does. Or, at least that's how it went down in my head.

Octavia probably thought she worked as a janitor or something backstage or helped set up. The bitch didn't care about getting Vinyl fired, because IT DID NOT EFFECT HER!! Only once it was PERSONAL does Octavia care. Octavia doesn't feel bad it happened to Vinyl, so much as it happened to DJ-P0n3.
Not only that, but they have a VERY different style AND persona. It's why people dismiss that Superman & Clark Kent are the same or Batman & Bruce Wayne. People take a look at their personal lives and go "Are you SERIOUS?? They act NOTHING alike!". I mean Clark Kent is a total WIMP. Bruce is just some playboy who just likes to party!
Shit I once passed a friend without noticing him, because he was NOT wearing makeup like usual, had a ponytail instead of having it loose, AND was wearing Office Max Uniform instead of his usual Rocker look. Therefore my brain did NOT even process that they were one and the same.
Once again we see the self-ceneteredness of Octavia. Though hopefully this will start to drive home just how much of what she THINKS the world is like, is actually WRONG.
Vinyl is giving Octavia a much needed dose of Tough Love to shock her into Reality.
What's sad is how many people today are still like this. "I don't care about THOSE people, THEY have NO EFFECT on MY LIFE, so WHY should I care about THEM???"
Though I have to wonder about the Father. It's hard to gauge just how much of a prick her is. I mean he DID get Vinyl fired, but then again he DID use it as a great lesson for his daughter, rather than just immediately caving into her for better or for worse.
I find it a little strange just how easily forgiving Vinyl is, plus she's acting as if she's taking on some measure of guilt or wrongdoing when Octavia hasn't quite started her journey on becoming a decent pony.
Still I am enjoying this ride, and I am curious to see where this goes. Also if there's going to be any shipping involved later.

Thank you for all of the comments! So, I do plan to continue this with a sequel at some point. I love these two and this dynamic has been a fun one. As for how quick Vinyl is to forgive Octavia, she's been through a lot (especially with the loss of her parents), and Octavia is trying to make amends. She's willing to give Octavia another chance.

I guess I'm just being more cynical. I'm not saying that Octavia shouldn't be forgiven, just that it seems like she's doing a little TOO good of a job "forgetting" the sins of Octavia. Then again I guess that Vinyl is just a better pony than I am @.@
