This was quite funny, as I have seen this problem raised numerous times. It's good that someone dealt with it in a realistic, albeit humorous, manner.

There are at least two different comics over at deviantart that explore this exact same premise. That's not criticism, mind you, I just felt like point that out. I'd also like to say that you did a good job describing Sunset's idiotic plan for taking over Equestria in a way that made me laugh. Personally, I suspect that the corrupted magic that transformed her in the first place also degraded her mind, making her dumb enough to believe that she could take over an entire country with just a few dozen untrained teenage puppet soldiers.

I'm not fond of her either - she hates bad jokes and technicalities!
I thought the same thing when I saw the movie and was just waiting for Twilight to say, "Go ahead," when Sunset made her threat. But yeah, I also thought of what 6546340 proposed. Even then though, Sunset's a teenage girl; how much damage do you think she could manage with one swing and would it be enough? Stone is pretty tough to break, after all. Plus there's precision to account for; sledge hammers are hard to swing accurately without practice, so she very well may have thrown the hammer threw the portal on accident.
Be funny if the portal isn't part of the statue at all and even if the the rock was busted, the portal ended up just floating there.
P.S.
Twilight and her friends have no room to talk. They were all afraid that the hammer would break the portal too, so they really shouldn't be calling Sunset stupid for thinking the same thing.
And then Sunset wakes up the next day to find out that she has amnesia, it's the perfect sequel.

Though one of my friends pointed out Sunset's actual plan was likely to convert her brainwashed army into demons like she did to Snips and Snails and was more intending to have an army of demonic beasts marching on Equestria. But it's funnier this way.

Getting hit in the head by a sledgehammer should have busted a skull or two. Even one as soft as Pinkies or as hard as Sunsets. In fact with the weight alone a slight throw should have scattered Sunsets brains all over the ground.
The real fun is telling Pony-Fluttershy she killed someone. Then watch the mental breakdown begin.

I'm honestly surprised it's been as well received as it has been, because this came out so far after the first Equestria Girls film.
I wrote this in two hours (literally, start to finish) and it's already quadrupled "Rise of an Alicorn's Destiny" which took a solid week to put together (and I think Alicorn's Destiny was better!)
Not that I'm complaining!
And then the damage done by the hammer ended up making Sunset good

i was watching the movie with a friend and was like "wait its a portal, how can she break it?"
and my friend said something that made it kinda okay. he said "she's not gonna break the potal, she's gonna break the stone around the portal. like if you were to smash the edging of the mirror on the other side. you know, so the portal shuts down?"
and i was "oh, yeah that could work"

Yeah, I thought that was pretty dumb too until I thought that maybe she was going to smash the edge of the portal so the stone would shatter. So it kinda makes sense.
...But that still doesn't excuse Twilight suddenly forgetting that she's a smart resourceful character and making that dumb decision of thinking Equestria will survive with one of the powerful Elements of Harmony gone despite them being essential to Equestria's protection and needing all six to work.

...When Sunset woke up in the school's infirmary later, she realised she could not remember a thing; at first, she wasn't concerned about this fact since her head was incredibly painful. However, after the school nurse gave her a headache pill, Sunset started freaking out due to not recognising who she was, where she was, or what she was.
As a result of not being able to remember her bullying days, or much of her previous life, Sunset was eventually able to make friends in Canterlot High, without requiring a Friendship Laser.
However, because a human sledgehammer was thrown through the portal and did manage to cause harm to a pony, Princess Celestia insisted increased security measures be placed around the mirror. This case of assault by a being across the mirror to a pony only avoided retaliation when Princess Twilight Sparkle informed Princesses Celestia, Luna and Mi Amore Cadenza that the perpetrator was Sunset Shimmer, a former pony and recent amnesiac. Instead, Sunset Shimmer was tried in absentia, found guilty of assault, and was thereby permanently banished from Equestria.
Since Sunset no longer remembered Equestria, this didn't change anything of note.
This was great. I kind of want to see what would happen in the movie, though, if Sunset tried to hit the portal--I feel like it would be very similair to this.
