If you read my other story, titled "When nopony's looking," you'll get a bigger explanation as to why he calls her that. It's a sibling fondness kind of gesture.
I don't know exactly what it is about this story that makes me smile so much. Maybe it's Applebloom's adorable naivety about the fragility of life. Maybe it's Big Mac's lovable personality. Maybe it's the relationship between brother and sister that you so perfectly wrote. I don't know.
This was a phenomenal story. It's refreshing to know that a heartfelt tale can be told in under 2000 words, as well. Keep up the good work!

Appleblossom.... Why does that sound so right coming from Big Mac?
Anyway, I'm glad to have finally found a story like this. For all the implications given in the show (and even in fanfiction) about how close they are, Big Mac and Applebloom have had little to no contact to build on; her relationship with Applejack has always taken the foreground (main character status helps with priority, I guess). This story captures exactly Big Mac's gentle and nurturing attitude, and also maintains Applebloom's innocence, which I love!

I loved this story.
It's so hard to find a good fanfiction focusing on Big Macintosh and Apple Bloom. Their age difference makes it a different relationship than the one our favorite filly shares with Applejack, but it also isn't non-existent. (that sounded cool) You did a very good job of leading us on, I was half expecting Applejack to be dead when we were approaching the climax. You wouldn't believe the guilty relief I felt when I learned it was a grasshopper. (embarrassed pony smile) Then her Big Brother came in.
He was able to see past the apparent pointlessness of the filly's sorrow, and focus on the important thing: the sorrow. That's a problem we have in today's society. Not enough people are able to see past their own problems, and focus on others. I am not exempt from this assessment. If only we were all ponies...
