The flower in this story sounds an awful lot like a Rembrandt Tulip...

Close match isn't it? The streaks in the Rembrandt Tulip are caused by a relatively rare fungal infection that amazingly doesn't kill it. These streaks make them much more desirable than normal tulips. Finally my brief knowledge of botany helps me with the visualization of a story.
