Serious talk here: You're opening was a little too exposition-heavy, especially since it's being told through dialogue between two characters who already know all the details. Maybe if this was told to Velvet, a character who, at that point does not immediately know and could act as a better audience surrogate. Just a thought.
Also, this sentence:
