Hey Toby,
I know you haven’t responded to our last letter yet, but I still wanted to write. So I got much farther along in your textbooks, and I have to say, slavery seems to play a major part in the whole of human history. Don’t get me wrong, slavery has played a part in Equestrian history too, but the most recent instances of it were over six centuries ago. We’re nearing the 20th century in your American history book and your country is already at war with itself over the issue.
I have to imagine your society has progressed since then, but I still want to say, the fact that these things have happened so relatively recently is just really disconcerting.
Now, I have no reason to believe that you support any of humanity’s past atrocities, and I’d still very much like to continue writing with you, but I want to ask one question before I continue reading on.
Does it get worse from here?
Just answer me that much at least. I hope your letter to your other pen pal is going great. Talk to you later.
Twilight
Oh, Twilight, you have no idea how barbarous humans can be to each other. Don't worry, it will eventually get better.
Fuck...welp. I think her innocence is going to be ruined by the holocaust if he doesn't respond soon.
Uh oh.
Twilight, if you think the American Civil War was bad, just wait until you get to the World War 2 era.
well maybe

In terms of American history, the Civil War killed more American soldiers and civilians than any other war fought by the United States in its entire history combined. In terms of World History, WWII is the worst time in human history for war, with the Black Plague being the worst in terms of natural disaster (Pandemic).
It would be interesting to see what she will think of Cells at Work.
9211189
And if Twilight thinks those are bad, wait until she hears about the Permian Extinction! Not a single human left alive afterwards.
9211178
Or just World War 1. 2 often tends to overshadow it because of Hollywood and the Nazi's being such iconic villains, but WW1 was... just a meatgrinder. A pointless, meaningless meatgrinder.
Nope! Things definitely don’t get worse, hehe... yknow two world wars, 3 genocides, 2 nukes, hundreds of civil wars and terrorists, brutal rapings and murders and Israel-Palestine. Nope nothing bad past The U.S civil war.
At least now we have U.N and EU
9211264
I think Sabaton put it like this in “Cliffs of Gallipoli”. SO MANY WASTED LIVES
9211340
Far more than three genocides.
9211504
Well 3 genocides big enough for a history book to mention, The Armenian genocide, The Chinese Genocide and the Holocaust
Also on a side note, there still exists Slavery or near enough in some places of the world. Sadly enough, it's still a thing here and there. So yeah not much better actually. Though some cool stuff happened, and in general as the economic growth continues slavery becomes less common. Though there might still exist a few pockets of it though none for physical labor per se.
9211509
The Rwandan Genocide, Stalin's Genocide...
9211541
Never heard of the Rwandan genocide, Stalin’s whole thing was more of a purge of if military and political leaders but eh, I think the Finns Genocided the Russians more
9211562
Your answer makes the History major in me cringe. Do yourself a favor and rent "Hotel Rwanda." It was a movie based on the actual events. I saw the guy speak at college. It was sobering. As for Stalin? A bigger mass murder than Hitler. In fact he makes Hitler seem second string. Look up The Ukrainian genocide. He basically starved the entire country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor

Pretty sure the permian extinction was long before humanity (and possibly dinosaurs) were even around.
Hey slavery still exists in the Middle East, Africa, and India.
Twilight is going to get a huge surprise when it comes to the world wars...
Lol, show her the history of Unit 731. Make her lose her hayburger all over the pages.
Sewing limbs on backwards and purposely infecting people with plague FTW.
We also found out that E=MC2 which means that if you take these weird, heavy rocks and refine them and squash them together really hard, they go boom pretty good.
Well, the good news is, she's just got, presumably, an average American high school textbook. Thus the descriptions will be fairly brief, clinical, and vague on specifics.
The bad news is, she's just got, presumably, an average American high school textbook. thus the descriptions will be fairly brief, clinical, and vague on specifics.
There will be highlights about the War, stuff about Grant, Lee, Sherman, and Jackson, and maybe, McClellan. Much ado about Sherman's destruction of the south, and a bit about Appomattox.
Moving forward, there's western expansion, and since it's a public school textbook there'll be plenty of attention paid to, interactions, with the natives. Then we skip everything that happens up until world war one.
MURDERDEATHSLAUGHTER
Then we have The Great Depression, followed by World War 2.
MURDERDEATHSLAUGHTERNAZISHOLOCAUST
After that unpleasantness, there was stuff. Then communists, they were bad, so there was a coldwar. With nukes. And Cuba. And Korea and Vietnam happened, but no student will be able to put them in the proper order even a week later. Or tell them apart.
Then there was a guy, Gorbachev? He decided Communism wasn't working, so they stopped. And now Russia isn't communist, and we still don't trust them. Because bears.
And while there's more in the book, that's about where the average curriculum peters out at the end of the school year.
Hyperbolic I know, but I really learned nothing useful in my high school courses that I hadn't already discovered in far more interesting books. Or elementary school. Twilight needs better sources.

Thank you, I always try to keep informed but I miss stuff like this thank you for the sobering experience
Only the better part of a billion or so deaths left to go Twilight.
(Yeah... yeah it gets worse. I find it interesting that she focused on the slavery aspect first though, instead of all the killing.)
9212110
Huh. It’s always good to see someone not being snappy and resistant after having their mistakes pointed out in a pretty harsh way.
No, it’s all rainbows and sunshine and peace and harmony from there.
...
Yeah... no. You have the two biggest wars in our history ahead of you, and to top it off, we’ve developed shiny new weapons that are so much more effective at killing other humans than those old muskets and whatnot. But hey, at least some of the wars have some element of “good vs evil” rather than wars fought out of greediness, right?
Just kinda felt I needed to point that out.
Still a great story, so to speak as it's more of a conversation XD
Oh and Twilight, it only gets worse from there.
It depends on your point of view. In one hand, the two great wars and quite a few other nasty stuff are just around the corner. But in the other, the invention of color TV and the internet are also quite close!
9211856
I think my favorite line from Doctor Who sums it up pretty well.
Even if it’s not exactly true for a given circumstance, the idea stands. Namely, modern luxuries build on the backs of what’s effectively slave labor.
Take my money!
Eeeeh I worry this fic is going to start going political from here.
Despite atrocities Twilight theres still hope in all of it.
oof
