The Wandering Bard

"I am a singer, a poet, a musician, a storyteller. I am a bard at heart. That is who I am. That is what I shall always be." (Icon by atokota on FurAffinity)

Bat ponies. They are a part of Equestria just as much as any earth pony, unicorn, pegasus or alicorn. They make up Princess Luna's guard. But not much is known about them. Where did these ponies come from? Who were they before? One ancient tome, penned by an explorer of a time long past, tells all.

Many, many thanks to my friend DangerCloseArt for suggesting that I do a story about bat ponies. Many thanks also to my friends Kirito-Persona, Alicorn Airport, and Protopony350 for being my pre-readers. And many thanks also go to Will-Owl-the-Wisp for being a pre-reader and editor, and for the phenomenal cover art. You can find the original here.

Congrats on getting this one out Lyric!

Just a personal opinion by the way, these sort of short prolouges can be rather annoying to first time readers. (Trust me I know, first story I ever did.:pinkiesick:)

But, you did alright with this one. It was a good length, it worked as a first chapter well, characterization was nice, and it setup the story! Congrats again!

Yeah, I know where you're coming from, but I think it's necessary here to explain the setup. Plus, it helps to tie in with the ending. Thanks much for the comment, your honest opinion and the favorite, my friend!

Oh cool! Didn't know you'd be releasing a new one so quick! I'll have to read soon.

Well this one has actually been sitting on my computer for months, so I figured it was time to finally release it. I hope you like it!

I know the feeling! I'm finally getting close to releasing a new one of my own. I got the sketch of the cover art for it, and it looks freaking adorable! Even uncolored :rainbowkiss:

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! I can't wait to see it! :pinkiehappy:

Well you already know how I feel about this one! I'd say it's a tie with "Just What I'm Dying For", Absolutely LOOOOOVE it!

*beams* Thanks so much, Protopony! I really appreciate it, especially after the day we've both had.

Awesome! Can't wait!

Well you already know how I feel about this one! I'd say it's a tie with "Just What I'm Dying For", Absolutely LOOOOOVE it!

Dang! Now I really can't wait to read it!

Argh! This is as bad as waiting for the first episode after hiatus! :raritycry:

Haha, well I hope you enjoy it all when it's out! Let's just say it took some surprising turns when I was wrapping it up. :rainbowderp:

I know how you write, hon. Your stuff is always excellent. First rate. That's why I'm so excited to read this new story of yours.

You have no idea how much I appreciate that right now. Thank you so much.

You're very very welcome. It's my pleasure.

your story shows to be of good quality. I'll be waiting for an update.

Until then thanks for writing.

And thank you very much for the compliment, the favorite, and the follow! I'll be releasing my next update within the next week or so.

I'm happy to hear it.

And the pleasure is mine

Wow, nicely written! Great job bringing in the conflicts without showing it! Can't wait for the next chapter!

Thank you very much, Elusith! I hope you like the next part. Thanks for the favorite, also!

although having them be mutants forcibly transformed into batponies seems a little odd...
oh well...they have new powers that are beneficial to them, don't have any feathers, and can presumably survive off more than just plants and stuff (yes horses and ponies can eat non herbivorous stuff, but its not that good for them) so their diet is more varied and sustainable for longer

Yeah, it was an interesting idea I had months back, so I figured, "Ah, what the hay!" and ran with it. I hadn't thought about the part with the varied diet though, since we've seen the Mane 6 and others eating things like pancakes and spaghetti. Interesting point, there!

Update: Finally happy to read this lovely story. Awwwwwwwwww yeeeeeeaaaaaaaah! I'm happy! I got my bardie fix.

Thank you, Po! I'm so glad you read it and that you enjoyed it. X3

You're welcome and I'm looking forward to more.

Alright, now that I've read this, you have my seal of approval.4.bp.blogspot.com/-r4SNnDCz0Hs/TrzS0ZIowXI/AAAAAAAACEA/iSg7EbmFdCM/s1600/true+seal3.jpg

I'm liking it so far. Bat ponies are cool.

Thank you so much! I'm glad that you're enjoying it so far. Funny enough, I don't know if I'd have actually written this if it weren't for my friend. But you are so right when you say that bat ponies are cool!

I prefer regular pegasi since they're cooler to me, but bat ponies are cool too.

I think each of the ponies are pretty cool in their own rights, but I find myself drawn to earth ponies for some reason. (You know, in case you couldn't tell. :rainbowlaugh:)

I have to say, so far, the earth pony OC I've created for his story is honestly my favorite OC so far. A lot of what draws me to specific character races is because they're actually less exotic. I'm a sucker for stories about underdogs and such. Earth ponies don't have the wings or magic, so they make do with what they have.

Thank you! Glad you're enjoying it so far.

That cover art go against my headcanon of what Dashing Hoof looks like therefore I hate it I love it.

:rainbowlaugh: I have to ask, then. What was your headcanon for him?

I imagined a beard, maybe a color closer to lyric, and for some reason the voice of Sir Patrick Stewart. and no i can not explain why.

Well it's funny that you mention the color closer to Lyric's, because my original incarnation of him had him as a distant ancestor of hers. I scrapped that idea out of fear it might make them too much like "special snowflakes". The beard and voice like Patrick Stewart though... Interesting ideas. :moustache:

Okay so I think this is how I logic'd it.

I always wanted Patrick Stewart to play the voice of Starswirl the Bearded.

Dashing Hoof discovered the stars.

Starswirl has a beard.

So logically for some reason Dashing Hoof would have a beard and same voice.

Or in other words

:rainbowlaugh: You should see the inside of my mind sometime.

Thank you so much, Emylia! It really means a lot to have a friend and author such as you say so.

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.

You're very welcome.

Also, those pictures are adorable!!!

and sent them to hassle us from the start.

I might suggest 'harass' instead of 'hassle', just to be in keeping with Luna's somewhat-formal mode of speech.

Ah, an excellent point! Thank you, and I shall make that change.

That was a pretty great story. Well done shift of view point between the entries and present day.

Thank you, Kestrel! I really appreciate that, and I'm happy that you enjoyed it.

(claps) all the up thumbs! this is a sweet little tale, certainly sounds like something you'd hear from bard (hehehe)

:twilightblush: Oh my gosh, thank you so much! I'm so happy that you enjoyed it!

“I can see why they did.” Luna started as she gazed upon the bard. Lyric stepped forward and bowed. “You are an inspiration to us all, Princess. Though you may have fallen from grace, you have returned to us from the darkness once more, and you are willing to learn from it. If you can overcome such a hardship, then so can we.”

That was so sweet. Im crying. Literally.

I am so sorry for taking so long to reply, but I am so glad that you enjoyed this scene! This whole interaction was not planned so it's so touching to see it affect others.
